Protherm Gepard Condens 12 MKO and 25 MKO

Gepard Condens with the MKO designation is designed directly for operation with a storage tank. The letter "M" in the designation means the boiler is equipped with a modulating gas burner, "K" indicates condensing design, and "O" indicates that the boiler has an output for the storage tank circuit without an integrated tank.

Protherm Gepard Condens 12 MKO is ideal for smaller apartments or houses with lower heat consumption – rated heat output of 12 kW at 80/60 °C and a condensing output of approx. 13 kW at 40/30 °C. Protherm Panther Condens 15 KKO represents a different philosophy: it is a boiler with an output of 15 kW that has not only a storage tank output, but also a more sophisticated hydraulic system with an integrated circulation pump with electronically controlled speed (so-called class A). In practice, this means lower electricity consumption by the pump (up to 30–40% compared to older fixed-speed pumps) and better adaptation to various hydraulic situations – for example, when combining low-temperature underfloor heating with a storage tank temperature of 55–60 °C.

Panther Condens is suitable for more demanding installations, where the customer requires direct integration with Protherm Thermolink control or with a smart home via the OpenTherm protocol. The Vaillant VU 246/5-3 ecoTEC pro model is a boiler with a heating output of 24 kW belonging to the ecoTEC pro series – Vaillant's entry-level (not premium) line. The designation "VU" indicates that it is a heating boiler without an integrated storage tank (Vaillant uses the abbreviation "VCW" for combi boilers). The boiler has a standard output for the storage tank circuit and an internal controller with DHW priority.

A practical advantage of the VU 246/5-3 over equivalent Protherm models is the eBUS communication module, which allows direct connection with an outdoor temperature sensor and a Vaillant controller without the need for additional converters. Vaillant VU 25CS/1-5 ecoTEC plus IoniDetect

Vaillant: more sophisticated modulation and eBUS integration

Vaillant ecoTEC plus with a sensoHOME or vSMART controller can control the storage tank circuit much more finely. The controller can monitor not only the target storage tank temperature, but also the heating rate (temperature trend) and adjust burner modulation so that the tank reaches the target temperature without a significant overshoot. This is more energy-efficient and also extends burner life (fewer start-stop cycles).

Another difference is the possibility of scheduling storage tank heating – e.g. setting the tank to charge only between 6:00 and 8:00 and between 17:00 and 19:00, which is especially advantageous in combination with solar heating or photovoltaics (the tank is only charged when there isn't enough solar energy available). Both brands are designed to work primarily with their own storage tanks (Protherm Lympha, Vaillant uniSTOR/allSTOR), but in practice they are commonly installed with storage tanks from third-party manufacturers (Dražice, Regulus, Tatramat, etc.). Compatibility conditions:

  • The storage tank must have an indirect heat exchanger (coil) – not direct electric heating, that's a different category.
  • The output of the storage tank's heat exchanger must match the boiler's output – if the tank's heat exchanger is designed for 15 kW and you connect a 25 kW boiler to it, the tank will be charged inefficiently (the boiler will cycle) or there will be undersizing at the tank inlet. The recommended minimum output of the storage tank's heat exchanger is 80% of the boiler's rated output.
  • NTC sensor or thermostat – most modern Protherm and Vaillant boilers can work with an NTC temperature sensor in the storage tank (typically Pt1000 or NTC 10 kΩ). If a third-party storage tank does not have a connector for the sensor, an external contact thermostat must be used on the tank casing and connected to the boiler's terminal block (terminals for the storage tank thermostat).
  • Storage tank circuit circulation pump – some Protherm Gepard MKO boilers have an internal pump that serves both circuits (heating and storage tank), while others require an external pump on the storage tank circuit. Vaillant ecoTEC plus standardly requires an external pump for the storage tank circuit (the internal pump serves exclusively for heating). This is a common source of customer misunderstanding when ordering.

Service, warranties, and availability of spare parts in Slovakia

This is an area where laypeople often make a mistake by only looking at the purchase price. Service costs over 10 years of operation can easily exceed the initial price of the boiler if you choose a brand with a weak service network.

Protherm has an extensive network of authorized service partners in Slovakia, with most larger cities (Bratislava, Košice, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Trnava, Nitra) having at least 3–5 authorized service companies. Spare parts are usually available within 2–3 business days for standard components (seals, ionization electrodes, condensate siphons, NTC sensors). The basic warranty is 2 years, extended to 5 years upon product registration with Protherm (conditions should always be verified on the current Protherm SK website).

Vaillant has a similarly strong service network, but a traditional advantage of Vaillant is that their authorized service partners are also partners for Protherm (since it's the same group). This means that, in practice, the same technician can service both boilers. Vaillant warranty upon registration: up to 7 years on some ecoTEC plus models (IoniDetect), which is a relevant advantage for premium models.

Important: the warranty only covers the boiler, not the storage tank and other accessories. And it does not apply if the boiler was installed by an unauthorized technician or if records of regular annual inspections are not provided. Therefore, always insist on installation by an authorized partner and keep service records.

What practice shows: experience from custom installations

From the installation technicians' point of view, the Gepard Condens MKO is considered among the "unassuming boilers" – a boiler that gets installed, commissioned, and causes no problems for years. The most common complication is not on the boiler side, but on the storage tank side: the customer buys a cheap tank without a proper NTC connector, the technician has to improvise with an external thermostat, which works but reduces the accuracy of DHW temperature control (fluctuation of ±5 °C instead of ±1–2 °C with an NTC sensor).

The Vaillant ecoTEC plus is slightly more demanding to configure when it comes to storage tank connection – error codes displayed for incorrect storage tank circuit pump wiring (F.75 – pressure fault, or F.22 – pump fault) can catch less experienced technicians off guard. But once the system is correctly set up and paired with a sensoHOME controller, the result is truly convenient: the customer can see the current storage tank temperature on their phone, remotely trigger a one-off DHW heating before arriving home, and receive push notifications in case of a fault.

In terms of energy consumption in storage tank mode: with a well-insulated tank (at least 50 mm PU foam) and a correctly set temperature of 55 °C (not higher!), the difference between Protherm and Vaillant in annual gas consumption is less than 2–3%. The insulation of the storage tank, the temperature of the heating system, and correct hydraulic control have a greater impact on consumption than the boiler brand itself.

Yes, that's common practice.
