Prepare the following:

  • Adjustable wrench (French key) or a 24–30 mm spanner – to unscrew the old head and tighten the new one.

Step 1 – Identifying the valve and thread type

Before you reach for the wrench, you need to know what kind of valve you are dealing with. This is the step where people most often make mistakes – they order a head, mount it, and find out it fits a different thread. They waste time, pay for return shipping, and the project is delayed by a week.

Look at the body of the valve (the part directly on the radiator) – on most valves, the manufacturer and type are either engraved or printed. The most common threads on the Slovak and Czech markets are:

  • M30×1.5 – a universal thread used by the vast majority of modern valves (Comap, IMI, Watts, Giacomini, Herz newer series). Most programmable heads, including Elektrobock HD10 and SALUS PH 55, are directly compatible with this thread, without an adapter.
  • Danfoss RA – very common in panel houses and apartments from the 70s–90s. Requires a Danfoss RA adapter (sold separately or included in the package with some heads).

Step 2 – Removing the old head or knob

Most radiators have either a manual thermostat head or a simple plastic knob (button) on a straight valve. In some apartments, the valve may even have no control element at all – just a bare conical connection. We will go through all these cases.

Manual thermostat head

These heads are usually attached either by a threaded connection (you screw the head directly onto the valve like a nut) or by a snap-on/clip mechanism with a locking ring. Procedure:

  1. Turn the head to the maximum setting (number 5 or sun symbol) – this fully opens the valve and minimizes the risk of pressure rising and the valve stem popping out while removing the head.
  2. If the head is attached with a nut: hold the body of the valve with one hand (or hold it with a wrench), and with the other hand or another wrench, turn the nut counterclockwise. No great force is needed – if the head refuses to loosen, gently tap it with a rubber mallet.
  3. If the head is on a locking ring: find a small button or protrusion at the bottom of the head, press it and at the same time turn the head. Some types just slide off along the axis.
  4. After removal, you will see the valve stem (a small metal pin protruding from the valve body). Do not tap it or bend it – it is a movable part that regulates water flow.

Knob without a thermostat function

Simple knobs are usually fixed with one screw (often hidden under a plastic cap in the center of the knob). Unscrew the cap, unscrew the screw, and slide the knob off the valve. Sometimes the knob is glued or stuck with hardened grease – gently loosen it with pliers and turn it.

Step 3 – Selection and installation of an adapter

If your valve has a thread other than M30×1.5, you will need an adapter. An adapter is a short brass or plastic insert that fits on one side onto the valve (its thread) and has an external M30×1.5 thread on the other side, onto which the head is screwed.

In practice, I have seen situations where a customer received, for example, four different adapters with the set, but did not know which one was the correct one. A simple trick: try to put the adapter on the valve without tools, just by hand. If it turns smoothly and fits without play, it is the correct one. If it vibrates or turns with a lot of play, the threads do not match.

Installing the adapter:

  1. Screw the adapter onto the valve by hand – always clockwise.
  2. Then tighten it with a wrench – not too tightly, just firmly without force. A brass thread is soft and can be easily damaged by over-tightening.
  3. Check that the valve stem still protrudes through the center of the adapter and can move freely.

Note from practice: with Danfoss RA valves, the adapter is slightly different – it is not only screwed in, but also snaps on (snap-on mechanism). Before that, you must first loosen the securing nut on the valve (turn it 90° to the left), screw on the adapter and then re-secure the nut. Step 4 – Inserting batteries and starting the head for the first time

Before you mount the head onto the valve, insert the batteries. It is more convenient – you have better access to the battery compartment and you do not have to twist behind the radiator. Most models use two AA (1.5 V) or AAA batteries. Check the polarity (+/–) according to the markings in the battery compartment.

After inserting the batteries, the head usually initializes automatically – a short self-diagnostic cycle starts, all display segments light up, and possibly a blinking battery or clock symbol appears. Do not mount the head onto the valve during this initialization – let it complete (it takes 10–60 seconds depending on the model). For example, with the Elektrobock HD20 or SALUS PH 60, an adaptation cycle of the motor is automatically started after inserting the batteries – at this moment, the motor tests its position and sets a reference point. Now comes the actual installation. The procedure depends on the type of head attachment:

Screw thread (M30×1.5)

The majority of programmable heads (Elektrobock HD10, HD20, SALUS PH 55, PH 60) are mounted by turning clockwise directly onto the valve thread or adapter. Procedure:

  1. Mount the head onto the valve and try to screw it on by hand – if it goes smoothly, continue.
  2. When it can no longer be turned by hand, gently tighten it with a wrench on the lower nut surface of the head – usually another quarter to half a turn is sufficient.
  3. Do not over-tighten! Plastic bodies of the heads can crack, and the brass thread on the valve can seize.
  4. Check that the head is not crooked – it should be perpendicular to the valve axis.

Snap-on attachment (e.g., Danfoss types)

Some heads (especially for Danfoss RA) are not screwed on, but snap into place – they click into position. Simply slide the head along the valve axis, press it in and wait for the click. Check that it is securely attached – gently pull on it.

Step 6 – Calibration and adaptation after installation

After mounting the head onto the valve, one of the most important steps follows, which many people skip or rush through: calibration (adaptation). It is a process in which the motor of the head "learns" how far it needs to push the valve stem to fully close and fully open the valve. Without this calibration, the head will work, but inaccurately – it may happen that the valve fully closes at a lift of 2.5 mm, but the head is set to a lift of 3.2 mm, which causes unnecessary wear or imperfect closing.

Calibration usually takes place automatically right after mounting the head – with the SALUS PH 55, it needs to be started manually by pressing the button for a long time, while with the Elektrobock EMF-1, it runs automatically on the first start. What happens during calibration:

  • The motor pushes the valve stem to the end (full closing).
  • It measures the resistance/position and remembers the reference point "closed".
  • It releases the stem to the end (full opening) and remembers the reference point "open".
  • It sets itself to a position corresponding to the current temperature profile setting.

Calibration typically takes 1–3 minutes. During this time, do not move the head, press on it, or reset it. If the head makes sounds during calibration (clicking, faint beeping) – this is normal.

Step 7 – Setting the time and the first program

After a successful calibration, the head is physically installed, but you still need to set the correct time and weekly program, otherwise it will only operate in the basic (manual or auto) mode. The setup procedure varies between models, but the principle is the same:

  1. Setting the time and day: Enter the menu (usually by long-pressing the "Menu" button or a combination of buttons). Set the current time and day of the week.
  2. Setting the weekly program: Enter time intervals with the desired temperature for each day (or group of days). For example: Mon–Fri: 6:00–7:30 = 21 °C, 7:30–15:30 = 17 °C, 15:30–22:00 = 21 °C, 22:00–6:00 = 17 °C. Weekend: 7:00–22:00 = 21 °C.
  3. Confirm the program and return to normal display mode.

The head refuses to screw on

Most common causes: incorrect thread (you are fitting M30×1.5 to a valve with a different thread), damaged thread on the valve, or the valve thread is clogged with old sealing material (Teflon tape, hardened grease). Solution: check the thread and, if necessary, gently clean it with a stiff brush. Never force the thread – you may damage the valve or the head.

After installation, the head does not heat / the radiator remains cold

Causes: the calibration did not run correctly, or the head is set to a temperature that is too low (e.g., 17 °C when the room temperature is 19 °C simply won't open the valve). Check that the head is set to a temperature higher than the current room temperature in manual mode, and observe whether the motor reacts after a while and opens the valve.

The radiator is making a humming or gurgling noise

This problem is not caused by the head – it is due to air in the system. Bleed the radiator (using the bleed valve in the top corner of the radiator). I recommend doing this before installing a new head, because you will check the bleeding anyway.

The display shows an error code or the key symbol is blinking

Both of these models from the domestic manufacturer Elektrobock are very popular in the Slovak market due to their simplicity and affordable price. Elektrobock HD10 is a basic model with a simpler display and buttons, Elektrobock HD20 has more advanced programming and touch control. Both are mounted identically on an M30×1.5 thread. Practical tip: with HD10, be careful to wait for the completion of the initial sequence (blinking "88:88" on the display) after inserting the batteries – this takes about 30 seconds. Only then mount it on the valve.

Elektrobock EMF-1

Elektrobock EMF-1 is a special model – it is a simple electric head without a display, intended for control by an external thermostat or smart system. The mounting is the same as with other models (M30×1.5), but it does not have an internal program – the temperature is set by powering it with 230 V or 24 V depending on the variant. This model is suitable for integration into existing control systems.

SALUS PH 55 and PH 60

Both models from the British brand SALUS are built for more professional use. SALUS PH 55 is a compact head with a simple LCD display, SALUS PH 60 features a larger display and more advanced programming. When installing PH 60, be careful with the adaptation routine – unlike some other models, SALUS PH 60 asks you not to press any buttons for at least 2 minutes during calibration.   1. Set the temperature manually to maximum (28–30 °C) – the valve should open and after a few minutes, the radiator should become warm (assuming the heating system is active).
  2. Set the temperature to minimum (5–10 °C) – the valve should close and the radiator should cool down after 5–10 minutes.
  3. Set the temperature to the desired value and check whether the head maintains the temperature within a tolerance of ±1 °C from the set point.
  4. Check the batteries – after calibration, the battery indicators may be slightly different from the beginning. If the display shows low battery immediately after inserting them, the batteries are likely old or of the wrong type (sometimes I encounter customers who insert old stock from their home collection).

Do I need to turn off the heating before replacing the head?

It is advisable to reduce the boiler to minimum in houses with their own boiler, but it is not necessary – the valve remains closed unless the stem opens it. In apartment buildings with central heating, this is usually not possible, so you replace the head while the system is running. In such cases, work quickly and have a cloth ready.

What if my valve does not have an M30×1.5 thread?

That is not a problem – the vast majority of programmable heads are supplied with adapters or adapters are available separately.
