A manual thermostat is one of the simplest control devices you can find in home heating. Despite that, surprisingly many mistakes are made during its installation – incorrect wiring, poor wall placement, neglecting voltage protection during work, or underestimating the impact of placement on measurement accuracy. The result is often a thermostat that lights up and reacts, but the heating doesn't switch on properly, the room overheats or, conversely, remains cold.
This article will walk you through the entire installation step by step – from preparing tools and checking the electrical diagram to final testing and the first settings. What is a manual thermostat and how does it work
Before you reach for the screwdriver, it's worth knowing what you're actually installing. A manual thermostat is an electromechanical device that compares the current air temperature in the room with the value set by a rotating wheel or lever. When the temperature drops below the set value, the contact in the thermostat closes (or opens – depending on the wiring), and the boiler or other heat source turns on. When the temperature reaches the set level, the contact switches again and the heating turns off.
The temperature sensing mechanism is bimetallic in most common manual thermostats: two different metals joined into a strip expand differently when the temperature changes, causing the strip to bend and move the contact. An alternative is a membrane sensor filled with gas or liquid. Both principles are reliable, but more sensitive bimetallic types are more common today.
Important for installation: most manual thermostats work on the principle of dry contact – they don't switch 230 V directly themselves, but only close/open the circuit on terminals marked COM and NO (or C and 1, 2, depending on the manufacturer). Some types, however, also require a working supply voltage of 230 V. Always check the catalog sheet of your specific model.
What you will need before starting the installation
Tools and materials
You don't need anything special for the standard installation of a manual thermostat. It's enough to have:
- Flat and cross screwdrivers (size PH1/PH2 and small flat for terminals)
- Voltage indicator (tester) – absolutely necessary, never work without verifying that the circuit is de-energized
- Multimeter – optional, but very useful for measuring voltage and checking the continuity of wires
- Water level or digital water level – so that the thermostat hangs straight (aesthetics, but also correct function of the bimetallic sensor in some types)
- Pencil and measuring tape – for marking the position of the holes
- Drill with a 6 mm diameter – for anchors, if you are mounting on masonry
- Anchor 6×30 mm and screw 3.5×25–30 mm (usually included in the thermostat package)
- Knife or wire stripper
Checking the thermostat delivery
Every thermostat should be delivered with a mounting base (backplate), screws and anchors, terminal description and instructions. In models such as Avansa TH1 or Euroster Q1, the contents of the package are minimal, but functional – base, screws and a two-sided installation manual. Before installation, read the terminal diagram – it is key. If you have lost it, you can always find it on the manufacturer's website or in the product sheet on atria.sk.
Safety first
Manual thermostats are connected to a 230 V circuit. It is usually a low-current thermostat circuit, but boiler terminal blocks and supplies are full 230 V. Before any work on the electrical part:
- Switch off the circuit breaker that powers the boiler or thermostat. If you are unsure which one it is, switch off the main circuit breaker.
- Verify with a tester that there is no voltage on the terminals. Test each wire separately – sometimes the neutral wire is switched and the phase wire is still live.
- Secure the circuit breaker with a strip or label "DO NOT SWITCH ON – work in progress", if you are not working alone.
- If you have an older apartment and it is not known how the wiring is organized, call an electrician.
Warning: in most cases, the thermostat cable (from the boiler to the wall) is not powered directly from an outlet, but from the boiler itself. The boiler can be turned on and there can be voltage on the terminals even if you turn off the "thermostat" outlet in the room. Disconnect the boiler from the power supply, or at least check the condition of the terminals with a meter.
Choosing the right place for the thermostat
The position of the thermostat on the wall has a decisive influence on how accurately it measures temperature and how correctly it regulates heating. This is not just a formal instruction from the manual – from practice I know that incorrect placement of the thermostat is the cause of problems for at least a third of customers who report "the thermostat doesn't work".
Where the thermostat should NOT be
- Directly above a radiator – the hot air flow from the radiator will mislead the sensor. The thermostat will think the room is 24 °C, while the actual temperature is 19 °C.
- Behind curtains or furniture – limited air circulation = slower response.
- On an external wall without thermal insulation – the wall will cool the thermostat, the sensor will measure a lower value than the actual air temperature.
- Near a window or door – drafts and cold air from the outside will distort the measurement.
- In a place where direct sunlight falls – the sun heats the housing and the sensor, the thermostat thinks it is warmer, the boiler remains off.
- In the kitchen or near the stove – heat from cooking will distort the regulation for the whole house.
Where the YES thermostat belongs
- On an internal wall in the reference room (usually the living room).
- At a height of 1.2 – 1.5 m from the floor – in this zone the air temperature is closest to the human body's perceived temperature.
- At a location with free air circulation, but without drafts.
- At least 0.5 m from the nearest radiator, ideally on the opposite wall.
Wiring preparation and checking existing wiring
Before the actual installation, check the condition of the wiring leading to the thermostat. In most Slovak apartments and houses from the panel housing era (1970–1990), the thermostat cable is two-core – usually CYKY 2×1 or JYTY 2×0.5. This is sufficient for most manual thermostats, as they only switch the control signal to the boiler.
If you are replacing an old thermostat with a new one, proceed as follows:
- Take a photo of the existing wiring before disconnecting anything.
- Note the color coding of the wires and which terminals they are connected to.
- Check the cable resistance with a multimeter (measure between both wires at the boiler side with a short at the thermostat side – typical value is 0.5–5 Ω for a cable length of 5–15 m).
- If you have no cable at all (new building, moving the thermostat), run a new cable JYTY 2×0.8 or CYKY 2×1 in a conduit.
When connecting to a boiler with terminals TA (thermostat) or RT, check what voltage the boiler provides to these terminals. Most gas boilers (Vaillant, Baxi, Viessmann, Protherm, Bosch) provide 24 V AC or 230 V AC to the thermostat terminals. A manual thermostat must withstand this voltage on its contacts – most common types can handle 230 V / 6–16 A, while for 24 V systems, a thermostat explicitly marked for low voltage is required, or a relay must be used.

Step-by-step installation procedure
Step 1 – Disconnect power and check
Turn off the boiler circuit breaker. Use a voltage tester to confirm that there is no voltage on the boiler's thermostat input terminals. Do this also on the side where the thermostat will be installed – sometimes the cable runs through the old thermostat and the live wire is still active. If you are unsure, measure the voltage with a multimeter against the grounding conductor (PE).
Step 2 – Remove the old thermostat (if present)
Most manual thermostats consist of two parts: the front cover (with the knob and sensor) and the rear mounting plate. The front cover usually snaps off the plate by pressing the catch from below or from the side. Then, unscrew the terminals and pull out the wires. Unscrew the base from the wall.
Step 3 – Mount the base of the new thermostat
Place the new base against the wall, mark the position of the holes with a pencil or pen. Check with a spirit level that the base is level. Drill the holes with a masonry drill (diameter 6 mm for standard 6×30 mm anchors), insert the anchors and screw in the base. Make sure the base is firmly attached – the thermostat will be turned occasionally with a rotating knob, and a loose base could become dislodged.
Step 4 – Introduce and prepare the wires
Feed the wires through the hole in the base. Strip each wire to a length of 6–8 mm – no more, excess bare wire can cause a short circuit. For stranded wires, twist the strands before inserting into the terminal. Never insert more than one wire into a single terminal unless the terminal allows it.
Step 5 – Connect the wires to the thermostat terminal block
This is the most important step. Connect the wires according to the terminal block diagram in your manual. Typical terminal labeling for manual thermostats:
- COM (or C, or 1) – common terminal
- NO (or 2) – normally open contact (load is turned on when temperature drops)
- NC (or 3) – normally closed contact (load is turned off when temperature drops – less common for heating)
- N and L – neutral and live wire (only for thermostats with their own power circuit, e.g., for lighting or digital display)
For standard heating, you usually connect only COM and NO. The boiler receives a "start" signal when the temperature drops – the contact closes and closes the boiler's control input circuit.
Step 6 – Mounting the cover and checking cable sealing
Secure the cable in the clamp on the base so that it does not hang freely and does not pull on the terminals. Mount the front cover of the thermostat onto the base – it must snap firmly into place. Turn the knob through its full range to ensure that nothing is catching and the cover is not deformed.
Step 7 – Connection on the boiler side
Before turning on the power, check the wiring on the boiler side as well. Each boiler has labeled terminals for the thermostat. Gas boilers such as Protherm, Vaillant, and Baxi usually have a terminal block behind the front panel, accessible after unscrewing two to four screws. Connect the wires to the TA (thermostat) or RT terminals. Do not forget to remove any jumper wire that may be present between the terminals – it is there from the factory as a temporary replacement for the thermostat and must be removed, otherwise the boiler will not operate.
Step 8 – Powering on and initial testing
Turn on the circuit breaker. The boiler should enter the standby mode. Turn the thermostat knob to a value significantly higher than the current room temperature (e.g., if it is 20 °C, set it to 25 °C). The boiler should start. Then turn the knob to a value lower than the current temperature (e.g., to 15 °C) – the boiler should stop. If it does not, there is a problem with the wiring – most commonly the COM and NO terminals are swapped.
Special cases and differences with various types of thermostats
Thermostats with their own power supply circuit
Models such as Avansa 2003 or Saswell 919 have not only a dry contact but also their own power supply terminals (L and N – live and neutral). These are necessary for powering the internal circuit (e.g., for a digital display with manual settings). The power circuit and control contact are galvanically isolated, but both must be correctly connected. The live wire must go to the L terminal (not N!) – if connected in reverse, the device may still work, but it is a safety hazard.
Thermostats for electric floor heating
Here, the thermostat is connected directly in series with the heating mat or cable heating. The current load can be significantly higher (6–16 A), and the thermostat contact must be able to withstand this load. Always check the power consumption of the heating mat and compare it with the maximum load of the thermostat contact. At a heating mat power of 1500 W and voltage of 230 V, the current is 6.5 A – most thermostats can handle this, but at 2000 W (8.7 A) or 3000 W (13 A), choose a thermostat with at least a 16 A contact.
Mounting on a DIN rail (cabinet types)
Some manual thermostats (mainly industrial types) are mounted on a DIN rail in an electrical cabinet and have only a terminal block without an integrated sensor – the temperature sensor is external, connected via a cable. Installation is then different: thermostat on the rail, sensor on the wall of the room. This type is less common in homes, but it can be encountered in more complex installations (e.g., boiler room + control).
Common installation errors and how to avoid them
Over the years I have seen various installations, and it was worth collecting the most common errors that repeat regardless of the type of thermostat:
- Forgotten jumper wire on the boiler – the boiler runs continuously, the thermostat controls nothing. Solution: remove the jumper between the thermostat terminals.
- Reversed polarity – with powered thermostats (L/N), this can lead to damage or incorrect function, or even a safety hazard.
- Loose terminals – the wire is held, but after vibrations from the boiler or regular turning of the knob, it can loosen. Always pull the wire to verify the connection strength.
- Excessively long stripped wire end – the bare wire protrudes from the terminal and can touch the cover or adjacent wires.
- Thermostat in the wrong location – as we have discussed, placement determines whether the measurement reflects reality.
- Wrong contact type (NO vs NC) – the boiler either runs continuously or does not run at all. Solution: swap the wires from the NO to the NC terminal or vice versa.

How to test the thermostat after installation
After turning on the power, perform these tests:
- Function test of the contact: Turn the dial to maximum – the boiler should start. Turn it to minimum – the boiler should stop.
- Hysteresis test: Set the temperature to the current room value (e.g. 20 °C). Observe at which actual temperature the boiler starts (e.g. at 19.5 °C) and at which it stops (e.g. at 20.5 °C). The difference should be 0.5–1.5 °C.
- Long-term cycle test: Let the system run for 30–60 minutes and observe whether the room temperature remains around the set value.
- Terminal check after 24 hours: Disconnect the power, open the cover and check whether the terminals are still tight and the wires have not discolored (which would indicate a poor contact and transition resistance).
Models such as SALUS EUROTEMP RT 10 have a simple terminal block and testing is quick. With more sophisticated manual thermostats with adjustable hysteresis, refer to the manual for the appropriate settings.
What to do if the thermostat does not switch on the boiler after installation
If the boiler does not start after correct wiring, proceed with diagnostics step by step:
- Check that the jumper on the boiler is actually removed.
- Bridge the thermostat terminals on the boiler with a wire – if the boiler starts, the problem is in the thermostat or in the cable between it and the boiler.
- Measure the resistance on the thermostat contacts (COM–NO) with a multimeter when the dial is set to maximum – it should be almost 0 Ω (contact closed).
- Measure the voltage between the boiler terminals – is there the expected 24 V or 230 V?
- Check the cable for a break – measure the resistance from the thermostat to the boiler.

Installation on different surfaces
Gypsum board
When installing on gypsum board, do not use standard masonry anchors – they will not hold. Use special gypsum board anchors (so-called molly anchors or anchors with an expansion mechanism). An alternative is to attach the base directly to the wooden frame behind the gypsum board, if you know where the frame is located. The thermostat is not heavy (usually up to 200 g), so a 5×52 mm gypsum board anchor can easily handle the load without problems.
Brick, concrete
Standard impact drill, 6 mm drill bit, 6×30 anchor. Make sure you do not drill into electrical wiring in the wall – check with a wire detector before drilling.
Wood (wood paneling, log house)
Screw directly into the wood without an anchor (pre-drill a 2.5 mm hole to prevent the wood from splitting). Use a countersunk head screw.
Recommended inspection and maintenance interval
A manual thermostat is a mechanical device – it has no firmware, no battery (in most models), but it has moving parts. Recommended inspection:
- Once a year: Open the cover, visually check the condition of the terminals and wires. Turn the dial through the entire range – it should rotate smoothly, without jamming.
- Every 3–5 years: Consider calibration or compare the measured temperature with an accurate thermometer. If the bimetallic strip loses sensitivity, the deviation can be 2–3 °C.
- In case of unstable switching: Check the contacts inside – in some cheap thermostats, the contacts oxidize over time and the resistance increases. Solution: gently clean the contacts or replace the thermostat.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Can I replace an old thermostat with a new one myself without an electrician?
In most cases, yes, if you follow safety rules (turn off the power, check with a voltage tester). Replacing a thermostat with the same type on the same terminals is a common DIY task. However, if you are changing the wiring type (e.g. from a 2-wire system to a 4-wire system), or pulling a new cable, I recommend consulting an electrician – especially if you are not familiar with the house's electrical installation.
Do I need to ground any wire when installing a manual thermostat?
Standard manual thermostats with dry contact (2-wire) do not require grounding – they only work with the boiler's control circuit. If your thermostat has power terminals L and N, the grounding wire (PE) is not connected to the thermostat – grounding is handled on the boiler side and in the house's electrical installation. If the thermostat has a metal cover and a terminal marked ⏚ or PE, connect the grounding wire.
The thermostat is connected, but the boiler runs non-stop and does not turn off. Why?
Most common causes: (1) A bridging wire (jumper) is still connected between the thermostat terminals on the boiler – removing it will solve the issue. (2) The wires are connected to the COM and NC terminals instead of COM and NO – the contact is normally closed and opens when the temperature is reached, which is the opposite of what is desired. Swap the wires to the NO. (3) The thermostat contact is mechanically stuck in the closed position – test with a multimeter and possibly replace the thermostat.
What is the maximum cable length between the thermostat and the boiler?
For dry contact (not switching 230 V directly), the cable length is not critical from an electrical point of view – the resistance of a CYKY 2×1 cable over 20 m is only about 0.7 Ω, which is negligible. The practical limitation is the mechanical routing of the cable through walls. For a thermostat that switches 230 V directly to the load (e.g. floor heating mat), stricter rules apply for wire cross-sections – for a 10 A load and a length over 15 m, use a minimum cross-section of 1.5 mm².
What if I don't have any thermostat cable in the room and want to install a thermostat?
You must run a new cable. Use a JYTY 2×0.8 or 2×1 cable in an electrical installation conduit (protective tube) – either under the plaster in a groove (if you are renovating), or in a surface-mounted strip. Run the cable to the boiler and connect it to the thermostat terminals. If you don't want to run a cable, consider a wireless thermostat – but that is a different category of products.
Why does my new thermostat measure a different temperature than the old one?
Each thermostat has a different sensor accuracy and a different sensor location inside the thermostat body. A difference of 1–2 °C between different thermostats is normal and does not indicate a fault. What matters is that the set temperature matches the perceived temperature in the room – this is what calibration is for.
