VAZ WD160 is an original external (façade) cover with an integrated noise silencer for local recovery units Vaillant recoVAIR VAR 60/2 D and DW. The cover is mounted on the exterior side of the installation pipe and performs several functions at once: it protects the outlet from weather influences (rain, snow, wind), prevents insects from entering the air duct, and the integrated silencer significantly reduces the transfer of noise from the exterior (traffic, wind) into the interior of the room.

Technical description and function

The VAZ WD160 cover is made of durable, weather-resistant plastic in white color, which is the standard color of façades and therefore optically discreetly blends into the exterior of most single-family homes and apartment buildings. The internal structure of the cover contains an acoustic silencer, which together with the VAZ installation pipe contributes to the overall standardized noise attenuation of the wall with the installed unit at a level of 42 to 50 dB – i.e., to ensure that noise from the street, traffic or weather influences does not penetrate through the ventilation unit opening into the room more significantly than through a standard wall without an opening.

The design of the cover is also solved in such a way that it does not hinder the free flow of air necessary for the proper function of the recoVAIR unit at its maximum capacity of 60 m³/h, while at the same time maintaining protection against the penetration of small insects and dirt into the air duct.

Installation

The external cover VAZ WD160 is mounted on the external end of the VAZ installation pipe after it is inserted into the core drilling in the perimeter wall, before or after the installation of the ventilation unit from the interior side. The installation is simple, without the need for special tools, and can be completed by an experienced craftsman within a few minutes per installation.

In the standard set of two recoVAIR VAR 60/2 units (e.g. 2 pcs unit + 2 pcs installation kit), one of these covers is usually supplied; when installing one or more additional units outside the set, it is necessary to purchase the cover separately for each façade outlet.

Acoustics of transfer through the façade – in more detail

The sound insulation of a standard masonry or brick wall without openings reaches values of approximately 45 – 55 dB, depending on the thickness and material. Any opening in this wall – window, door, or ventilation transfer – represents a weaker point in terms of sound transfer, since air (unlike solid masonry) transfers sound waves significantly less damped. In installations in exceptionally noisy locations (busy roads, proximity to a railway or airport), it is possible to further increase the achieved attenuation by adding the VAZ-G160 silencing insert directly into the installation pipe, which is recommended as additional equipment in conjunction with this cover.

Placement on the façade and the influence of orientation

When selecting the exact location for the installation of the cover on the façade, we recommend taking into account the direction of prevailing winds and rain (usually the western and north-western side in the conditions of Central Europe is the most exposed to precipitation), and if possible, place the outlet on the less exposed side of the façade, or under the eaves of the roof, where the degree of direct rainwater penetration is lower. However, the cover VAZ WD160 is designed to handle normal operation even on more exposed sides of the façade thanks to its construction with protection against direct penetration of precipitation in combination with the IPX4 protection rating of the unit.

Maintenance and filters

The recoVAIR VAR 60/2 unit uses a pair of filters – one of ISO Coarse 45 % class on the side of the supplied (external) air and one of ISO Coarse 30 % class on the side of the extracted (internal) air. Depending on operating conditions (urban environment, pollen season, proximity to a busy road), the filters should be checked and replaced approximately 2× to 4× per year; the display of the control panel or remote control will notify you of the need for replacement. Filter replacement is an unattended operation without the need for service intervention – the filter insert is simply pulled out and replaced with a new one.

The ceramic heat accumulator is a maintenance-free component without moving parts, which does not require cleaning or replacement during normal operation throughout the life of the unit. We recommend that the fan be checked during regular service inspections of the heating/ventilation system every few years, although it is a component designed for long-term maintenance-free operation.
