Why dimensions matter more than they seem
It might seem that choosing a heating radiator is simple: you look at the wall, estimate what fits, and order it. In practice, it doesn't work that way. Every year we deal with cases where a customer receives a radiator at home and realizes it doesn't fit between the socket and the door, or that it fits the space but leaves only a few rungs for drying towels. Or the opposite extreme – they bought an oversized radiator that takes up the whole wall and now the bathroom feels claustrophobic. The dimensions of a straight radiator are therefore the first and most important parameter to resolve before you even open any e-shop.
This article focuses precisely on dimensions – width, height, depth – as well as on what affects the final installed dimension on the wall, what dimensions are typical for a bathroom and what for a hallway, and why the same radiator with the same numbers in the catalog can behave completely differently in two different bathrooms.
What "radiator dimensions" actually mean – and what they are not
When you see "450 × 1180" in a catalog, these numbers refer to the center-to-center dimensions, i.e., the distance from the axis of the left connection to the axis of the right connection (width) and from the axis of the bottom connection to the top edge of the body (height). It is important to understand this because the actual built-up width and height will always be greater.
To the center-to-center width, you typically need to add 30–50 mm on each side (the width of the outer collector and any corner connections). To the center-to-center height, you add the height of the bottom connection from the floor, or the center of the bottom pipe valve. The visible height of the radiator on the wall is therefore greater than the number in the catalog.
In practice, this means: if you have a wall 530 mm wide available, a radiator with a center-to-center width of 450 mm will fit with some margin. If the wall is 480 mm wide, it may be tight – it depends on the specific model and the type of connection.
Standard dimensions of straight radiators – overview and where they are used
On the market, straight radiators come in a few commonly used dimensional ranges. For the Slovak and Central European markets, the most common combinations are:

These dimensions are not random – they emerged as a compromise between performance, aesthetic proportions, and compatibility with standard apartment architecture. Most bathrooms built since the 1980s still have walls where at least one of these dimensions fits somewhere.
Dimensions for the bathroom – in detail
The most common problem: where the radiator physically fits
Bathrooms are the most dimensionally demanding spaces in an apartment. Not because they are small (although that is also a problem), but because they are full of technical elements: sockets, switches, ventilation grilles, tile corners, openings for the shower, bath, toilet, and sinks. Each of these elements requires a safety distance and each of them blocks potential space for a radiator.
From experience, we know that the most common available spaces for a radiator in a bathroom are:
- Wall opposite the entrance – usually the longest free wall, but often occupied by a sink or shelves
- Wall next to the WC – usually 50–70 cm of free space, a radiator with a width of 450 mm is ideal here
- Wall next to the shower corner – if the corner is in a corner, there is usually 50–80 cm of wall left next to it
- Wall behind the door – it works, but the radiator must have such a dimension that the door does not interfere when opening
Before measuring, don't forget to note not only the total width of the wall, but also the location of sockets, switches, water and waste outlets. We install the radiator with a minimum distance of 5 cm from the side wall and 10 cm from the ceiling or floor (we are talking about the body itself, not the connections).
Height of the radiator in the bathroom – what affects the lower limit
We try to install the bottom edge of the radiator at least 10–15 cm above the floor (above the top edge of the floor tiling), for practical reasons: cleaning, as well as technical – the connection valve needs space for a wrench. In practice, the bottom axis of the radiator connection is most often installed at a height of 15–20 cm from the finished floor.
This means that with a radiator with a center-to-center height of 1180 mm, the top edge of the body will be at a height of approximately 1180 + 150 + 50 mm (connection flange axis + height from the floor + head extension of the collector) = about 138 cm from the floor. With a ceiling height of 240 cm, more than a meter of free space will remain above the radiator – visually, the radiator appears airy and not overwhelming.
With a ladder of 1500 mm in height, the top edge of the body will be about 175–180 cm from the floor. This is still comfortable for rooms with a ceiling height of 230 cm or more, but in older apartments with lower ceilings (210–220 cm) it may look bulky.
Width of the ladder in the bathroom – 450 or 750 mm?
This is the most common question our customers ask. The answer depends on two factors: how much space you have and how much heating power you need.
A width of 450 mm is the golden standard for bathrooms. It is a dimension that fits most walls next to the shower, next to the toilet, or behind the door. For a standard bathroom of 5–8 m², it is usually sufficient in terms of performance (with appropriate height). Specifically, Straight ladder 450 × 1180 is the most popular model precisely because it combines a neutral dimension with performance sufficient to heat a standard bathroom.
A width of 750 mm makes sense if you have a larger bathroom (over 8–10 m²), or if the bathroom is poorly insulated and you need a more significant heat output. Customers also choose it if they want the ladder primarily as a towel rack with the largest possible shelf area. With a width of 750 mm, at least 80–85 cm of free width can be accommodated on the wall – which is not always possible in many bathrooms.
Special case: ladder above the bathtub or in the shower
A fairly common solution, especially in older apartments where there is no other space. The ladder is mounted on the wall along the bathtub, at a height that allows comfortable access. In this case, the dimensional limit is determined by the length of the bathtub (usually 160–170 cm) and the position of the faucet. A ladder of width 450 mm and height 740–1180 mm usually fits into this space without problems. A taller ladder (1500 mm) can be problematic with a lower ceiling or in case of a conflict with the plumbing faucet.
For this type of installation, the Straight ladder 450 × 740 is suitable – a compact size that does not compress the space above the bathtub and at the same time fulfills the function of a towel rack and heating.
Dimensions for the hallway – different priorities, different limitations
Why the hallway is different from the bathroom
The hallway places different demands on the ladder. Heat output is usually less critical (the hallway is not heated to 22 °C, 18–19 °C is sufficient), but spatial limitations are different. Hallway walls are long but narrow – typically 90–120 cm wide. The ladder must primarily allow smooth movement. Therefore, ladders in hallways are installed in recesses (if available), or models with a smaller depth are chosen.
The depth of the installed ladder from the wall (including valves and fittings) is usually 10–15 cm. In a narrow hallway, this can be noticeable. Therefore, sometimes the hallway next to the entrance or the staircase is chosen, where the ladder installation is less problematic.
Dimensional recommendations for the hallway
The most commonly used ladders for hallways have a center-to-center width of 450 mm and a height of 1180 or 1500 mm. Height is more important than width here, because the hallway needs to distribute heat more evenly along the vertical profile of the wall rather than having maximum width.
If the hallway leads into an entrance area and there is enough free wall (140 cm or more), a ladder of width 750 mm can be placed there. In such a position, it also looks visually more interesting and can serve as a storage element for towels and clothing at the entrance. Specifically, Straight ladder 750 × 1500 is a powerful unit that can also serve as a design element in a more spacious hallway or entrance area.
On the contrary, in a narrow hallway (under 100 cm), it is recommended to completely reconsider whether a ladder is the right solution or whether another type of heating would be more suitable. A ladder with a depth of 10–15 cm in a hallway of 90 cm width leaves only 75–80 cm for movement, which can be inconvenient when carrying furniture, a stroller, or when passing with bulky clothing.
Height of the ladder installation in the hallway
The same rules apply to the hallway as to the bathroom – the lower connection at least 10–15 cm above the floor. In addition, on the hallway, the position of the radiator pipe, which runs from the riser or from the boiler, must also be considered. If the pipe runs along the floor, installation is straightforward. If it runs under the ceiling, longer extension pipes are needed and the installation becomes more complicated.
From the perspective of drying towels and everyday clothing, which is also stored in the hallway, it is advantageous to have the lower shelf at least 30–40 cm from the floor – otherwise nothing practical can be hung there. With a standard installation of 15 cm from the floor and a collector diameter of about 3 cm, the lower edge of the body is at a height of about 18 cm, which is acceptable.
How to correctly measure the space before ordering
Step by step – measuring in the bathroom
This is the procedure we recommend to every customer before they click "add to cart":
- Mark the location of existing connections on the wall (if you are renovating an existing heating system). Radiator connections are usually routed in the floor or wall, and their axis determines where the bottom connection of the radiator will be. It is possible to change the location of the connections, but it adds to the installation cost.
- Measure the free width of the wall between fixed obstacles (corner, door, socket, sanitary ceramic). This is the maximum usable width. We recommend allowing at least 5–10 cm on each side as a reserve.
- Measure the height from the floor to the ceiling and mark the location of obstacles (switch, ventilation grid, mirror).
- Check the center-to-center spacing of existing connections – both horizontal and vertical. The center-to-center spacing of the connections must match the center-to-center dimension of the radiator. If the connections are not yet installed, you have complete freedom.
- Calculate the usable width vs. the center-to-center width of the radiator: add 30–50 mm to each side of the center-to-center width of the radiator (depending on the model) to get the actual usable width.
Practical example: A customer has a wall in the bathroom that is 630 mm wide between the corner of the shower and the adjacent wall. A socket is located 130 cm above the floor. The connections come from the floor, with the axis 180 mm from the corner wall. A radiator with a width of 450 mm has a usable width of approximately 510–520 mm. The remaining 110–120 mm from the corner is fine. The height of 1180 mm fits well because the socket is above the top edge of the radiator. Result: Straight radiator 450 × 1180 was the ideal solution.
Step by step – measuring in the hallway
The procedure in the hallway is a bit different:
- Determine where the radiator branch runs – if it comes from the boiler in the basement, it usually runs along the floor. If the apartment is in a multi-story building, the branch may be routed from a riser in the shaft.
- Measure the width of the hallway – if it is less than 100 cm, consider whether the radiator will restrict movement.
- Measure the length of the free wall section – hallways often have doors, switches, and cabinets. Find the longest free section.
- Check the location of the doors – if there are doors nearby, mark the swing arc and make sure the radiator does not interfere with the door's movement.
Size vs. performance – what is the relationship and why it matters
The size of the radiator directly determines its thermal output. A simple rule applies: the larger the radiator, the higher the output. However, the relationship is not linear – it also depends on the number and diameter of the fins, the material, and the temperature of the heating water. For now, let's just note the basic relationship: for a standard 5 m² bathroom with standard insulation and heating water temperature of 70/55 °C, a power of around 350–500 W is sufficient. For 8–10 m², it is 500–750 W. These values are covered by most mid-range radiators with a height of 1180–1500 mm and a width of 450–750 mm. For larger areas or worse insulation, it is advisable to choose Straight radiator 750 × 1500, which is one of the more powerful models in this category.

Special situations and atypical dimensions
Radiator in a recess or niche
If you have a masonry recess (niche) in your bathroom or entrance hall, it is an ideal space for a radiator – it does not protrude into the room and looks as if it is built in. However, the dimensions of the niche are usually atypical: a 40 cm deep recess, 60 cm wide, 120 cm high. In such a case, you need to check a few things:
- Depth of the niche vs. radiator projection from the wall including fittings – the radiator must not protrude beyond the wall line more than aesthetics allow
- Width of the niche vs. usable width of the radiator – allow at least 5 cm on each side for fittings and visual impression
- Height of the niche vs. total installed height of the radiator – do not forget about the downward connections
Two radiators side by side
In some larger bathrooms (family homes, larger apartments), customers install two smaller radiators side by side instead of one large one. For example, two Straight radiators 450 × 1180 instead of one 750 × 1180. Advantages: more even heat distribution, the ability to control each one separately, and easier handling during installation. Disadvantage: two connections, two valves, higher installation cost.
Radiator as part of a comprehensive renovation
If you are doing a full bathroom renovation and the connections have not yet been installed, you have maximum freedom. In this case, we recommend first selecting the radiator (size, design, output), and then having the plumber route the connections to match the exact center-to-center distance. This is the cleanest and most cost-effective approach – much better than the opposite approach, where the connections are installed "blindly" first and then a radiator is searched for that matches their dimensions.
Other parameters that influence the choice of size
Type of connection and its impact on installation dimensions
Straight radiators are supplied either with a side or a bottom connection. A side connection (from the side of the lower collector) is more common and does not protrude as much from the wall – the depth of an installed radiator is typically 8–12 cm. A central bottom connection is less common, but in some situations more practical (when the piping runs directly under the radiator). Weight and mounting – dependency on size
A larger radiator is heavier and requires more robust mounting. A 450 × 740 mm radiator filled with water weighs approximately 8–12 kg. A 750 × 1500 mm radiator can weigh up to 30–40 kg. Installing larger radiators on a drywall wall is problematic – it is essential to anchor them into load-bearing profiles or use special wall anchors. On a masonry wall, there are no mounting issues with any standard size.
Visual proportions
This is a parameter that customers often underestimate, but they often address it after installation. A radiator should be visually balanced in relation to the wall it is hung on. A radiator that is too narrow on a wide wall looks out of place. A radiator that is too tall in a low-ceilinged room optically lowers the wall. Golden proportions: the width of the radiator should be approximately 1/3 to 2/3 of the width of the wall it is hung on. The height should not exceed 80% of the room height. These rules are, of course, only guidelines – function takes precedence over aesthetics, but when both can be combined, the result is much more pleasant.

What size of radiator is best suited for a standard 6 m² bathroom?
For a 6 m² bathroom with standard insulation and a ceiling height of 240 cm, the most common and proven combination is 450 × 1180 mm. This size fits almost every wall, meets the thermal needs of the space, and does not take up unnecessary space. If the bathroom has a large window or is on the north side, consider 450 × 1500 or 750 × 1180 for higher heat output.
Can a radiator be taller than the height of the pipe connections?
The center-to-center height of the radiator (pipe-to-pipe) must match the distance between the supply connections in the wall or floor. If the connections are coming from the floor, you can use corner elbows and extension pipes to adjust the position – but this is extra work and needs to be planned before tiling. If the connections are coming from the wall, they are usually fixed, and you must choose a radiator whose center-to-center height matches their distance.
What if a radiator with the required output physically does not fit on the wall?
This is a fairly common situation, especially in small bathrooms in older apartments. There are several solutions: 1) Increase the temperature of the heating water (if technically possible), which increases the radiator's output at the same size. 2) Install electric heating as a supplement (electric heating element in the radiator). 3) Consider another type of heating for this space (e.g., electric floor heating). 4) Move the radiator to another wall or to the hallway and partially heat the bathroom from there. What is the difference between a 450 × 1180 and a 750 × 1180 radiator in terms of installation?
Both radiators have the same center-to-center height, so the height position of the connections is identical. The difference is in the width – 450 vs. 750 mm – which means the installation width will be different (approximately 510–520 mm vs. 810–820 mm). The installation procedure is the same, but for the wider radiator, different mounting distances are used. The weight of the 750 × 1180 radiator is significantly higher, which may be relevant for a drywall wall.
Can I use a small radiator (450 × 740) in the hallway as the main heat source?
A 450 × 740 radiator has a relatively low heat output – approximately 180–250 W at a standard temperature drop. This may be sufficient to maintain the temperature in a short corridor (up to 5–6 m²), but it is not enough as the main heat source for a longer hallway or entrance. For a hallway, we recommend a minimum height of 1180 mm, ideally 1500 mm. A 450 × 740 radiator is more of a supplementary element or a solution for very small spaces.
Do the connections have to be exactly on the center-to-center dimension of the radiator, or is there a tolerance?
Most radiators allow for a minimum tolerance of ±5–10 mm if you use flexible hoses (so-called hoses) instead of rigid piping. With rigid pipe connections, the center-to-center dimension of the connections must be very precise (±2–3 mm). Therefore, before ordering, measure the position of the connections precisely and compare them with the radiator's catalog dimensions. If the difference is greater, it is necessary to adjust the position of the connections before completing the construction work.

For a bathroom, a width of 450 mm and a height of 1180 or 1500 mm is ideal in most cases. For a hallway or entrance with a larger wall area, you can safely go for a width of 750 mm.
