And yet, most of the causes are simple, fixable by yourself, and with a bit of attention, quite predictable.

How the hose connection sealing works – what actually holds the water
Before we move on to the causes of leakage, it is important to understand what happens in the connection. A stainless steel hose is connected by a nut with an internal thread to the opposite external thread of a valve, faucet, or under-sink block. The thread itself in standard installation hoses is not the sealing element – it is only a mechanical fastening. The actual sealing is ensured by a rubber (EPDM) or silicone gasket inserted into the nut.
When the nut is tightened, this gasket is compressed between the front face of the nut and the seating surface of the valve. This creates a radially stressed seat, which, when properly tightened, can withstand the normal water pressure in the system – in Slovakia, it typically ranges between 2 and 6 bars, and in older apartment buildings, it can occasionally reach 8 bars. The dependency is simple: if the contact is clean, parallel, and the gasket is undamaged, the connection holds. If any of these conditions are not met, water will find a way out.
Most common causes of leakage at the hose connection
Over the years of practice, we keep seeing the same reasons why hoses leak. Some are due to installation errors, others are the result of material aging or an unsuitable hose being selected. Here are the most common ones.
1. Damaged or missing gasket
This is by far the most common case. The rubber gasket inside the nut is small, easily falls out during handling, and it is very possible to miss it lying on the floor. The installer then tightens the nut without a gasket – the connection looks perfect from the outside, but water starts dripping immediately when the valve is opened. A similar situation occurs if the gasket is still in place, but the hose has been stored for several years in a warehouse: the rubber ages, hardens, cracks, and loses elasticity. Even a visually undamaged gasket from an old hose that has been lying in the garage for 5+ years can be the cause of a leak.
Another common scenario: the customer buys a cheap hose with a thin gasket made of low-quality rubber. At first tightening, it holds, but after a few months of pressure and temperature exposure (especially with hot water), the gasket loses elasticity and starts to leak. 2. Insufficiently or incorrectly tightened nut
The second most common case. The nut must be tightened by hand and then another 1.5 to 2 turns with a wrench. Many people are afraid of over-tightening and only tighten by hand – that is not enough, the gasket is not compressed sufficiently, and water leaks through. On the other hand, it is important to note that with hose connections, the rule "the more, the better" does not apply. Over-tightening the nut means crushing the gasket, or possibly cracking the plastic or brass body of the nut. The optimal tightening is a gentle but firm force – without using extension bars on the wrench.
A mistake also occurs when the installer tightens the nut at an angle – not perpendicular to the thread axis. The result is uneven compression of the gasket: over-compressed on one side, insufficiently on the other. Water then leaks precisely where the gasket is looser.
3. Dirty or damaged seating surface
The seating surface of the valve or the body of the faucet – that is, the place where the gasket sits – must be flat, clean, and free of corrosion. In older installations, it can happen that this surface is covered with limescale, rusted, or physically damaged (a groove from a previous wrench, a crater from corrosion). The gasket then sits unevenly, and water finds a way through these irregularities. The solution is to chemically or mechanically clean the surface before installing the new hose. If the surface is deeply damaged, the valve itself must be replaced.
4. Wrong thread size or incompatible types
Stainless steel hoses are supplied in 3/8" and 1/2" threads – these two sizes are not interchangeable. A 1/2" nut placed on a 3/8" thread may turn freely for the first two turns, but will never seal, because the threads do not engage properly. In practice, this may look like the nut is "almost" tightened, seems stable, but starts dripping under water pressure. The customer is convinced they have a bad hose, but in reality, they have the wrong size. A similar problem occurs when mixing norming systems – for example, a BSP (Gas) thread vs. an NPT thread. In Slovakia and the EU, BSP threads are standard, but in some imported faucets (especially from non-European sources), NPT threads appear. The geometry of the threads is different, the connection does not seal even with the best gasket.
5. Cracked or mechanically damaged hose body or fitting
The stainless steel braid itself cracks only under extreme stress or internal corrosion. Much more common are cracked fittings: when tightened too strongly, brass or plastic fittings crack at the point where the material is weakest – usually along the axis. The leak is then visible directly from the body of the fitting, not from the sealing surface. Brass fittings are generally more durable, while plastic ones fail sooner, especially if the hose is older and the plastic has been long-term exposed to UV radiation or heat.
Another form of mechanical damage is bending the hose into too small a radius. The stainless steel braid handles this well, but the inner hose made of EPDM rubber or another polymer can lose its seal due to cracking after repeated bending – usually not along the hose itself, but at the transition to the fitting, where the stress concentration is highest. 6. Wear and aging of the sealing over the years
Even a properly installed hose has its lifespan. Manufacturers specify a standard lifespan of 10 years under normal conditions (temperature up to 60 °C, pressure up to 10 bar). In practice, we see that hoses in hot water systems (basin hot water, shower valves) age faster – seals start leaking after 7–8 years. Cold water hoses last longer. 7. Limescale and corrosion at the joint
In areas with hard water (hardness over 25 °dH, common e.g. in Bratislava and southern Slovakia), limescale also accumulates on the sealing surface. During disassembly and reassembly, these deposits crush and create irregularities. The problem can also occur in the opposite way: long-term limescale action can mechanically "lock" the fitting so that it cracks during an attempt to disassemble. Solution: always check and, if necessary, clean the sealing surface with diluted vinegar or limescale remover before assembly, then rinse with clean water.
How to identify the exact location of the leak
Before any repair, you must know exactly where the water is coming from. A drop on the fitting does not necessarily mean it is leaking from the fitting – water can run down from above along the hose. Here is a proven method:
- Wipe the entire hose and both connections dry – with a paper towel or cloth, including the bottom of the fittings.
- Wrap each connection separately with a piece of dry toilet paper or kitchen towel. Toilet paper is more sensitive to moisture than regular fabric.
- Turn on the water and wait 2–3 minutes – the paper at the leak location will get wet or darken first.
- Check the hose body as well – condensation on cold water can mimic a leak; it is not an issue with hot water. Condensation is recognized by even dampness along the entire surface of the hose.
If you still cannot find the exact location with this method (e.g., the water drips rarely, only under higher pressure), a pressure test can help: close the valve for the entire hose, attach a small manometer to one end, and monitor if the pressure drops. But this is more for advanced cases – for a regular household leak, the paper test is sufficient.
Step-by-step repair procedure
Most leaks at hose connections can be handled by a non-professional with basic tools. You need: an adjustable wrench (фpahцyzák) or two wrenches of sizes 24 mm and 27 mm, a replacement gasket or a new hose, possibly Teflon tape, a bucket, and a cloth.
Step 1 – Close the water supply
Before any manipulation, close the water supply to the given device. For a basin or toilet, this is usually a quarter-turn valve directly on the wall under the device. Turn it to the right (clockwise) until it stops. Then open the faucet to equalize the pressure and drain the remaining water from the pipe. Place a bucket or support the hose – the remaining water will drain out when you unscrew the fitting.
Step 2 – Hose disassembly
Hold the valve or body of the faucet with one wrench, and unscrew the hose fitting with the other. Always twist to the left (from the fitter's perspective). If the valve is not held in place, it can turn during pulling and damage the pipe behind the wall – this would be a much bigger problem than the original drip. On old installations with limescale, the fitting will be stiff; use WD-40 or penetrating oil, wait 10 minutes, and then try again.
Step 3 – Inspection and cleaning
After disassembling the hose: check the gasket (rubber washer inside the fitting). Is it undamaged, elastic, and without cracks? Check the valve seating surface – is it clean, free of scale and corrosion? If yes, the problem was likely only insufficient tightening. If the gasket shows any damage, replace it. New gaskets are available in packs, but it is easiest to replace the entire hose – the price difference is minimal and you have the certainty that all other parts are in good condition.
Step 4 – Replacing the gasket or the entire hose
If you are replacing only the gasket: remove the old one and insert a new one of the same diameter (for 1/2" hose, standard outer diameter is 13–14 mm, for 3/8" it is around 10–11 mm). The gasket must lie flat at the bottom of the nut seat – check that it is not twisted or shifted. If you are replacing the entire hose, choose the correct length – adjustable hoses are ideal in this case, as they can be adapted to the distance without the need for cutting. Step 5 – Installation and tightening
Place the nut on the valve thread and screw it on by hand – it should go in smoothly, without jamming (if the thread jams, the size is incorrect or the thread is damaged). Tighten it by hand until it stops, then add another 1.5 – 2 turns with a wrench. Hold the opposite side. Do not use an extension or a pipe on the wrench – you will exceed the torque and the nut or gasket may crack.
Note on Teflon tape: Teflon tape is not commonly used and not necessary on hose connections with flat gaskets. The sealing is ensured by the flat washer, not the thread. Teflon on the thread could even slightly distort the geometry and cause the nut to not go far enough. Exception: if the seating surface is damaged and there is no other option, you can try Teflon as an emergency solution – but the correct solution is always to replace the valve or hose.
Step 6 – Leak test
Open the water supply slowly. Monitor the connections – first without load, then let the pressure build up to full. Wait 5 minutes, dry the connections and check again. If it is dry, you are done. If it still leaks, usually tightening the nut by another quarter turn is enough – but if the gasket is of good quality and the surface is clean, it should be leak-tight right after proper tightening.
When to repair and when to replace the entire hose
The question is practical: is it worth replacing only the gasket, or the entire hose? The answer depends on several factors:
- Age of the hose: If the hose is older than 8–10 years, replace it entirely. The gasket is not the only part that ages – the internal rubber tube, braiding, and possibly the brass parts also degrade. You will save a few euros on the gasket, but in a year you will face the same issue with another fault.
- Cracked nut: A cracked nut cannot be repaired. The entire hose must be removed. A new hose with stainless steel or brass nuts ensures better durability in the future.
- Deformed braiding: If the stainless steel braiding is crushed or bent at a sharp angle, the internal tube is likely also damaged. Even if the pressure does not show a leak, it is a safety risk – the hose can burst unexpectedly under pressure. Replace it.
- Damaged valve seating surface: In this case, repairing the hose will not help. The valve must be cleaned or replaced – and this is already a job for a plumber.
As a practical tip: the price of a new quality stainless steel hose is 3–8 EUR, depending on length and type. The price of an hour of a plumber's work is 25–50 EUR. Replacing the hose yourself is always economically sensible – if you feel confident in installation, do it comprehensively and buy a new hose. Do not waste time saving on a gasket that costs 0.20 EUR.
Specifics of adjustable stainless steel hoses
Adjustable hoses have one key advantage over fixed-length hoses: they can adapt to the installation distance without bends and without forced stretching. This is important because, under pressure (during stretching or bending), the hose transfers mechanical stress to the joint – which can over time loosen the nut or damage the gasket.
Adjustable hoses must be installed in a compressed or slightly stretched state – not fully extended. If you stretch the hose to its full length and the spring body is under maximum tension, every vibration in the piping (common when a tap is suddenly closed) is directly transferred to the joint. Proper installation: the hose should have at least 10–15 % "free play" compared to its maximum length.
Another thing: in adjustable hoses, material fatigue can occur at the point where the spring transitions into the fixed nut – the so-called neck. This is the structurally most stressed area and in cheaper hoses, this is where the first leak usually starts. Brass vs. stainless steel fittings – does it relate to leakage?
The material of the nuts does not directly relate to leakage in correct installation, but it indirectly affects it in two ways: corrosion and mechanical resistance. Brass fittings are more resistant to mechanical damage during tightening – they do not crack as easily. Stainless steel fittings are more resistant to corrosion from air humidity and limescale, which means the sealing surface remains smooth and sealed for longer. Prevention – what to do to ensure the hose never leaks
The best repair is the one you don't have to do. Here are practical tips to minimize the risk of leakage:
- Always check the gasket before installation – visually and by touch. The gasket must be flexible, without cracks, of the correct size and properly seated in the nut.
- Clean sealing surface – before installing a new hose, always clean the valve surface. Residues of old gasket, limescale or corrosion are the most common causes of leakage in newly installed hoses.

- Do not over-tighten the nut – tightening by hand + 1.5 turns with a wrench is optimal. More is not always better.

Common mistakes and myths when repairing a leaking hose
"Tightening it harder will fix it." In most cases, yes, if the nut was not tightened enough. But if the gasket is damaged or the surface is dirty, tightening harder will not help – it will only crush the remaining gasket and after an hour it will start dripping again, or the nut will crack.
"Teflon tape on the thread will save it." Teflon tape is suitable for tapered threads (gas, NPT threads) or for straight threads without a face seal. In hose connections with a face gasket, Teflon tape on the thread does not help at all and can complicate the correct tightening of the nut. The correct answer is always a new gasket or a new hose.
"If it doesn't drip immediately, it's fine." Sometimes a leak appears only at higher pressure (e.g. when the boiler releases hot water and the pressure in the system jumps to 4–5 bar) or the gasket only starts to leak after a few hours. Always wait at least 24 hours after installation and check again.
"Cheap hose and quality hose seal equally well." The quality of sealing elements and the precision of nut manufacturing differ. In cheaper hoses, the gaskets are made of lower quality rubber, which hardens faster. In certified hoses for drinking water (certificates EN 13618, DVGW, WRAS or SK certification), the materials are tested and the declared lifespan is a guarantee. Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
The hose leaks right after installation – what did I do wrong?
The most common cause is a missing or incorrectly seated gasket, or insufficient tightening of the nut. Turn off the water, unscrew the nut, check the position of the gasket (it must lie flat at the bottom of the seat, not twisted) and tighten the nut with a wrench by 1–2 turns more. If it still leaks, check the cleanliness of the valve seating surface – a common problem is residue from the old gasket.
Can I replace only the gasket, or do I have to buy the whole hose?
It depends on the age of the hose. If the hose is younger than 5 years and is otherwise in good condition, you can replace only the gasket – it is a common rubber washer, available in any plumbing store. If the hose is older than 8 years, replace the whole one – not only the gaskets age, but also the inner tube, whose degradation can affect the quality of drinking water.
The hose leaks only at full pressure, not at low flow – why?
This is a typical sign of insufficiently compressed gasket. At low water pressure, the gasket "is enough" to maintain the joint, but at full operating pressure of 3–6 bar, the overpressure overcomes the remaining sealing force. Solution: tighten the nut (if possible), or replace the gasket. It can also be a sign of a cracked gasket, where the crack opens only at higher pressure.
The joint is dry, but there is moisture under the cabinet – where is the leak?
Check whether the moisture is condensation on the cold water (typical in warm periods). If not, the water may be dripping from another location – for example from the sink trap, from the battery gasket in its body, or from the opposite joint. Use the paper test method on each joint separately, including the trap and drain pipe.
Can I use a shower hose for drinking water?
Only if the hose is certified for drinking water. The certification must be stated by the manufacturer – look for markings such as EN 13618, WRAS, KTW or the relevant national certification.
