When a customer orders a stainless steel hose under the sink or to the faucet, most people focus on the length and thread. The question of the material of the fittings? It remains aside – until problems start to appear. And it is precisely here that one of the most common sources of unnecessary expenses and repeated repairs lies. Stainless steel and brass fittings are not just an aesthetic choice. They are a technical decision that affects the hose's lifespan, the safety of drinking water, resistance to the environment, and ultimately whether you will have to replace the hose again in five years or not.
In this article, we will look at both materials in detail – how they work, where each of them excels, where they fail, and how to choose the right one for the specific conditions of your home or renovation.
What are hose fittings and why do they matter?
Fittings are metal parts at both ends of a flexible hose that ensure the connection between the hose and the fixture – that is, the faucet, corner ball valve, connection valve of the toilet cistern, or the inlet valve of the appliance. It is precisely these connections where most problems occur: water leakage, corrosion, mechanical damage during installation, or contamination of drinking water in the case of an unsuitable material.
Fittings must meet several requirements at once. They must be strong and resistant to twisting during installation, the seals must withstand long-term water pressure (usually 10 bar in a typical household, up to more in extreme cases), the surface must not react with drinking water, and at the same time they must be resistant to environmental humidity – which is almost certain in the bathroom or under the sink. Each of these points affects the choice of material.
Brass – a classic material with a long history
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, most commonly in a ratio of 60–70% copper and 30–40% zinc, possibly with additional additives (lead, tin, aluminum) depending on the application. In plumbing practice, brass has been used for decades – and there is a good reason for it. It is easily machinable, can be threaded well, has a pleasant stiffness when tightening, and has sufficient strength for normal operating pressures.
Brass fittings are mostly yellow to golden in color, although today they are commonly supplied with surface treatments – chrome-plated, nickel-plated, or covered with a thin layer of another metal. This ability to offer a wide range of surface treatments is one of the advantages of brass: it can be processed relatively cheaply and aesthetically adapted to various requirements.
Where brass works well
In environments with normal water hardness (i.e., where the water is not extremely soft or aggressive), at normal temperatures and pressures, brass works reliably for years. If you install a hose to a toilet cistern or a faucet in the bathroom, where there is not a constantly high humidity and contact with chemicals, a brass fitting will serve you without problems for 5–10 years with proper installation.
Brass is also advantageous where you need low cost in large quantities – for example, when equipping apartment cores or in bulk installations in rented apartments. The price difference compared to stainless steel fittings is not dramatic, but it becomes noticeable when you have ten hoses.
Weaknesses of brass
Brass has two major weaknesses: corrosion and dezincification. Corrosion is the oxidation process of the surface, which in a humid and air environment gradually changes the surface of the metal. In brass, this is manifested by a typical greenish coating (verdigris) – copper oxide. This process is mostly superficial and does not immediately threaten the functionality of the thread, but over time it weakens the joint and makes disassembly more difficult.
Dezincification is a more serious problem. It is the selective leaching of zinc from brass – especially in soft, acidic, or stagnant water. The result is a porous, brittle structure that can crack even under normal tightening. In practice, this looks like the hose appears to be in good condition, but when you want to remove it after five years, the fitting breaks under slight load. This is a typical situation that plumbers encounter during renovations of older apartments.
Another problem is lead content. Older brass fittings and valves contained lead as an additive to improve machinability. Today, regulations (in the EU mainly the DWI directive, DVGW, ACS and others) strictly limit the lead content in materials that come into contact with drinking water. Products meeting these requirements are labeled as "lead-free brass" – but not all cheap products on the market actually meet this. When choosing, always check the product certification, not just the material declaration.
Stainless steel – more modern, more durable, more expensive?
Stainless steel (most commonly AISI 304 or AISI 316 for sanitary applications in practice) is an alloy of iron, chromium (min. 10.5 %) and nickel. The chromium content is key – it forms a passive layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the steel, which is chemically inert and protects the material from further oxidation. This layer is self-repairing: even after scratches, it will regenerate in the presence of oxygen.
For hose fittings, this means one crucial thing: stainless steel does not corrode under normal operating conditions, does not leach harmful metal ions into the water, and does not exhibit dezincification (because it contains no zinc). From the perspective of long-term reliability and hygienic safety, a stainless steel fitting is clearly the better choice.
Where stainless steel excels
Stainless steel fittings are worth the investment wherever there is increased humidity, an aggressive environment (e.g., under a kitchen sink, where temperature and humidity regularly alternate), or where a long-term installation without planned replacement in a 10–15 year horizon is intended. They are also more suitable in households with soft water, where the risk of dezincification of brass is higher.
From the perspective of drinking water, stainless steel fittings AISI 304 and 316 have been long-term proven to be hygienically safe. They do not oxidize, do not leach lead, copper or other potentially harmful substances. For households that care about the quality of drinking water, or where there are small children, this is an important argument.

Limits of stainless steel fittings
Stainless steel is not without its weaknesses. The first is cost – stainless steel fittings are more expensive to produce, which is reflected in a higher product price. In practice, this is not a dramatic difference for one hose (we are talking about a few euros), but for larger orders it is a factor.
The second issue is galvanic corrosion. If you combine a stainless steel fitting with a brass valve or copper installation, you can under certain conditions (presence of an electrolyte, i.e., water) trigger a galvanic cell and accelerate the corrosion of the less noble metal. In normal household conditions, this risk is low, but when two different metals are in direct long-term contact in a humid environment, it is important to keep this in mind.
The third factor is the hardness of the material. Stainless steel fittings are harder than brass ones – during installation, they require a slightly higher torque and it is important not to over-tighten, to avoid damaging the sealing or the thread in the softer brass valve.
Brass vs. stainless steel: practical scenarios from everyday practice
Over years of sales experience, we see quite clear patterns of when customers prefer one or the other material – and when they are mistaken.
Scenario 1: Bathroom renovation, new faucet, new installation
This is an ideal situation for using stainless steel fittings. The installation is new, you have the option to choose a quality product from the start, and the decision will last 10–15 years. Brass fittings are cheaper, but in a complete renovation, where the plumber's labor costs several times more than the price of the hoses, it is reasonable not to save on a component that determines the lifespan of the entire connection.
Scenario 2: Repair of a leaking hose in a rented apartment
Here the logic is the opposite. If you are replacing the hose quickly and cheaply, and it is a standard installation in a well-maintained apartment with normal water, a brass fitting is a reasonable choice. The price is lower, availability is higher (brass versions are commonly available in any big store), and with proper installation, it will serve for several years without problems. Scenario 4: Connecting a toilet cistern
A toilet cistern is one of the places where the hose is almost stationary and not in direct contact with an aggressive environment. Brass fittings are fully sufficient here and their lower price is a justified advantage. Combined products: stainless steel braiding with brass fittings
A large portion of hoses available on the market – and this also applies to PROFI MW products – combines stainless steel braiding with brass fittings. This is a compromise that makes sense: stainless steel braiding protects the inner rubber or EPDM hose from mechanical damage and external influences, while brass fittings reduce production costs and simplify threading (brass is easier and cheaper to thread than stainless steel).
For most common household applications, this combination is fully sufficient. The key is to ensure that the brass is certified for contact with drinking water and complies with current European standards. When selecting products, therefore, look not only at the material but also at the certificates on the packaging or in the technical documentation of the product.
If you want a uniform all-stainless steel installation – for aesthetic reasons or for maximum durability – choose products where both the braiding and the fittings are made of stainless steel, such as, for example, PROFI S with stainless steel fittings.
How to identify the fitting material without a technical datasheet?
This is a practical question that comes up quite often – especially when selecting products in a physical store or when comparing products online without complete technical documentation.
Brass fittings are typically yellow to golden in color, or possibly chrome-plated to a silver color. They have a warmer tone. Stainless steel is matte silver, more grayish, without a yellow undertone. If you bring a magnet close, neither material will be magnetic – neither brass nor austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304, 316) is ferromagnetic. This test therefore does not distinguish between the materials, but it can help reveal a low-quality steel casting with a thin chrome coating, where the magnet will attract.
It is also hard to distinguish by weight – stainless steel is slightly lighter than brass for the same volume (density of stainless steel is about 7.9 g/cm³ vs. brass 8.4–8.7 g/cm³), but for small fittings, the difference is not noticeable.
The most reliable way is to read the technical documentation, certifications, and product description. A well-specified product always explicitly states the material of the fittings. If the manufacturer does not mention it, that is a warning sign in itself.
Certifications and standards – what to look for when purchasing?
For hose connections in contact with drinking water, various national certification schemes apply in the EU, but you can orient yourself according to these key markings:
- DVGW (Germany) – one of the most prestigious certifications for fittings and components in contact with drinking water. Products with a DVGW certificate have undergone independent testing of materials, seals, and overall performance.
- ACS (France) – French certification for contact with drinking water, equally strict.
- WRAS (UK) – British scheme, relevant for exports and some manufacturers list it as an additional certification.
- KTW/W270 (Germany) – standards for the hygienic safety of plastics and elastomers in contact with water – important for the inner hose and seals.
- EN 13618 – European standard directly for flexible hose assemblies for drinking water installations. If a product complies with this standard, you can be fairly confident of its quality.

Impact of water quality on material selection
Slovakia has relatively diverse water hardness in different regions. In some areas, especially in the lowlands of central and eastern Slovakia, the water is hard (up to 30–40 °dH), which means a high content of calcium and magnesium. In mountainous areas and some cities, the water is soft (under 10 °dH).
Hard water is relatively benign for brass – calcium deposits on the surface even partially protect the surface from corrosion. Soft water is more problematic, as it is chemically more aggressive to metals, since it does not contain protective mineral ions. Precipitation of brass is more likely with soft water, and stainless steel fittings are a better choice.
The pH value is also important. Neutral water (pH 7) is benign for both materials. Acidic water (pH below 6.5), although rare in Slovak water supplies, significantly accelerates the corrosion of brass. If you have your own well with more acidic water, stainless steel is clearly the better choice.
Esthetic aspects and appearance in the space
This is a topic that is not usually considered in technical articles, and yet it is precisely this that customers argue about when making a choice. Stainless steel fittings have a more modern, "cleaner" look that fits with current design trends in bathrooms and kitchens – matte steel, gray and white tones, minimalism. Brass fittings have a warmer, more traditional look.
Under the sink or basin, it is not visible, so aesthetics do not play a role. For visible installations – for example, when the faucet is mounted on the wall without cladding or with certain types of freestanding basins – the material of the fitting can influence the overall visual impression.
An interesting category includes hoses covered with colored plastic sheathing – for example, white plastic that covers the metal braiding. In this case, the color of the braiding is irrelevant, but the material of the fittings remains visible. Long-term costs: is it worth paying extra for stainless steel?
Let's calculate it specifically. The price difference between a hose with brass and a hose with stainless steel fittings is in practice 1.50 to 4 euros per piece, depending on the dimensions and manufacturer. For one hose, it is negligible. For an apartment with 10 hoses (basins, sink, toilet, washing machine, shower), the difference is 15–40 euros for the entire installation.
The lifespan of stainless steel fittings is 15–20 years under normal conditions, and brass fittings 8–12 years (with proper installation and normal environment). If we consider the costs of replacement – including the plumber's work, which is now 30–60 euros per hour – then one premature replacement costs significantly more than the savings on a cheaper hose.
Therefore, if you are renovating the bathroom or replacing all the hoses at once, an investment in stainless steel fittings pays off in the long run. If you are replacing one hose urgently, the brass version is a reasonable compromise.

Is a brass fitting really safe for drinking water?
Yes, if it is certified brass without lead content (marked as "Pb-free" or with the appropriate DVGW, ACS or EN 13618 certification). Products meeting these standards are hygienically safe and have been proven in practice over the long term. Problems arise only with cheap, non-certified products from unknown sources, where the lead or other heavy metal content is not guaranteed. Therefore, always buy hoses from verified manufacturers with stated certifications.
Can I connect a stainless steel fitting to a brass valve?
Yes, this is a common and problem-free combination. Threads are standardized (G 1/2", G 3/8" according to ISO 228), and the material of the thread does not change this. The only thing to be careful about is tightening – a stainless steel fitting is a harder material and excessive torque can damage the finer thread of the brass valve. Tighten carefully, using a wrench with a maximum of 20–30 Nm, and always check the tightness after the first time the water is turned on.
How long will a stainless steel fitting last in the bathroom?
Under standard conditions – municipal water, pressure 3–6 bar, cold water temperature up to 20 °C, normal humidity in the bathroom – stainless steel fittings AISI 304 will last 15–20 years without problems. It is practically recommended to replace the entire hose (including seals and the inner hose) every 8–12 years as a precaution, even if everything looks fine visually. Why is my brass fitting turning green?
The green coloring is oxidation of copper from the brass – so-called verdigris. It is a natural chemical process and in normal amounts it is not harmful to health, but it indicates that the metal surface is corroding. It most often appears in places with stagnant moisture – for example, where the hose slightly drips and water accumulates around the fitting. The green layer can be surface-level and easily rubbed off, or it can indicate deeper corrosion that weakens the material. If the coloring is extensive and accompanied by a white powdery coating, we recommend replacing the hose.
Is a stainless steel fitting always better than a brass one?
Not always and not under all circumstances. For installations in a dry, well-ventilated environment, with certified brass and a planned replacement within 8–10 years, a brass fitting is fully sufficient. Stainless steel is a better choice where there is increased humidity, soft water, a long-term installation without service, or where maximum hygienic safety of drinking water is important (families with children, allergy sufferers). The goal is not always to choose the "better" material, but the right material for the specific situation.
What is worse: a bad fitting material or a bad installation?
From practice, we can say that a bad installation is by far the most common cause of problems – regardless of the material of the fitting. A twisted fitting, damaged seal, wrong thread (G vs. NPT), a hose installed with a sharp bend or without sufficient free space – these are things that can destroy even the highest quality stainless steel hose within a few months.
