Vaillant aroTHERM pro VWL 115/7.1 A 400 V is an outdoor unit of an air-to-water heat pump in a monoblock configuration, designed as a source of heating, cooling and hot water for single-family homes and small businesses with higher heat loss. It is the most powerful model in the aroTHERM pro /7.1 series (together with the smaller units VWL 55/7.1 A and VWL 75/7.1 A) and the only one of the three that is powered by three-phase 400 V — this allows it to achieve a higher nominal output even at lower outside temperatures without the need to overdimension the household electrical connection.

The monoblock design means that the entire refrigeration circuit including the compressor, heat exchanger and expansion valve is enclosed directly in the outdoor unit. No refrigerant piping leads into the house, only standard heating pipes with water (or possibly an antifreeze mixture) — installation can therefore be carried out without the involvement of a certified refrigeration specialist, which reduces costs and installation time. Connection to the house heating system is ensured by a hydraulic module (e.g. Vaillant VWZ MEH), which is installed indoors and takes care of regulation, circulation and, if necessary, electrical auxiliary heating.

Natural refrigerant R290 (propane)

aroTHERM pro VWL 115/7.1 A operates with refrigerant R290 (propane) with a charge of approximately 1.05 kg. This is a natural refrigerant with an exceptionally low global warming potential (GWP), which Vaillant uses in the new generation of heat pumps as a replacement for synthetic refrigerants with a high GWP. Thanks to the thermodynamic properties of R290, the unit achieves a high output temperature range and stable performance even at low outside temperatures, while the unit's safety concept ("Flexible Space") allows installation even in closer proximity to windows, doors or property boundaries than was common with previous generations of heat pumps using flammable refrigerants.

For whom is it intended

Thanks to its output exceeding 11 kW at A7/W35, the VWL 115/7.1 A is suitable for larger single-family homes, new buildings with higher heat loss or renovated homes with floor and radiator heating, or a combination of both. The three-phase 400 V power supply also allows for more even loading of the electrical grid compared to single-phase 230 V units of the same power class, which can be an advantage when revising or dimensioning the household electrical installation. In combination with a hot water storage tank, the unit can also ensure year-round hot water supply.

Installation and necessary accessories

As it is a monoblock, an indoor hydraulic module (e.g. Vaillant VWZ MEH 400) must be added to the outdoor unit to ensure connection to the heating circuits, hydraulic components, safety devices and, if necessary, electrical auxiliary heating at extremely low temperatures. System control is provided by the sensoCOMFORT or multiMATIC regulation, which also allows remote management via the myVAILLANT app. The unit can be combined with Vaillant water storage heaters (e.g. the uniSTOR or actoSTOR series), or with solar collectors for hot water preparation.

When planning the location of the outdoor unit, sufficient space must be considered for air flow around the evaporator and, with regard to noise, the recommended distances from living rooms (both your own and neighboring ones) must be observed. Thanks to the safety concept "Flexible Space" with refrigerant R290, the minimum distances from windows and openings are designed so that installation is possible even on smaller plots or in densely built-up areas — the exact values are specified in the manufacturer's installation manual according to the unit's location and orientation.

Operation and cooling

Do I need a refrigeration certificate for installation?

No. Since it is a monoblock with a closed refrigeration circuit directly in the outdoor unit, only water (heating) piping leads to the house. Installation can therefore be carried out by a standard heating technician without special authorization for work with refrigerants.

Why is this unit 400 V and not 230 V?

The VWL 115/7.1 A model is the most powerful in the aroTHERM pro /7.1 series and its higher power consumption requires a three-phase 400 V power supply. The smaller models VWL 55/7.1 A and VWL 75/7.1 A are, on the contrary, single-phase, 230 V units.

What refrigerant does the unit use and is it safe?

The unit uses natural refrigerant R290 (propane) with a charge of approx. 1.05 kg. It is a flammable but environmentally friendly refrigerant with a very low GWP; since the entire circuit is enclosed in the outdoor unit outside living areas and the manufacturer defines safe distances, its use is safe when installation regulations are followed.

Can the unit also cool?

Yes, in combination with a suitable indoor hydraulic module and for example underfloor heating or fancoils, it can also provide active cooling in the summer period (SEER 6.53).

Is an additional heat source needed at low outside temperatures?

Thanks to the high maximum output temperature range (up to 70 °C) and power reserve, the unit can cover the heat loss of the house in most normal winter conditions on its own; the hydraulic module also has an integrated option for electrical auxiliary heating for extremely cold days, which increases the system's operational reliability.

What is the warranty?
