aroTHERM pro VWL 75/7.1 230 V is an outdoor unit of an air-to-water heat pump from the German manufacturer Vaillant, manufactured as a monoblock – the complete refrigeration circuit (compressor, evaporator, expansion valve and primary circuit circulation pump) is enclosed directly in the outdoor unit. Thus, no refrigerant piping is led into the house, but only standard heating piping with a heat transfer liquid (water with an antifreeze mixture), which significantly simplifies installation, shortens the installation time and eliminates the need to call in a refrigeration technician with certification for work with refrigerants. The unit VWL 75/7.1 belongs to the aroTHERM pro range with single-phase power supply 230 V and is intended for family houses with medium to high heat loss, where a higher heating capacity is required than with the smaller VWL 55/7.1 model.

Why aroTHERM pro VWL 75/7.1

The heat pump uses heat contained in the outside air and, using a compressor refrigeration circuit, transfers it to the heating system of the house. Thanks to this, it is able to produce several kW of heat from 1 kW of electrical energy – the actual ratio (COP) varies according to the outside temperature and the temperature of the heating water. The 75/7.1 model is built as a balanced solution between performance and requirements for the electrical connection: standard single-phase 230 V is sufficient even at a higher heating capacity, so during the renovation of a house, it is often not necessary to build a new three-phase line to the outdoor unit.

The newer generation of aroTHERM pro (designation „7.1“) brings quieter operation, more precise power regulation and better efficiency at low outside temperatures compared to the older range, which is directly reflected in lower operating costs during the heating season and in colder areas of Slovakia.

Why a monoblock and not a split system

In split systems, the refrigeration circuit is divided between the outdoor and indoor unit and connected by refrigerant piping, which must be installed and charged exclusively by a technician with a refrigeration certificate. In the case of a monoblock such as aroTHERM pro VWL 75/7.1, the entire refrigeration circuit is already complete from the factory and charged with refrigerant directly in the unit. Thus, it is sufficient to lead standard heating piping (similar to a boiler) insulated against frost and optionally supplemented with an electric auxiliary heating in extremely cold areas to the house. The advantages are:

• simpler and faster installation without the need for work with refrigerant on the site,
• lower risk of refrigerant leakage during the lifetime (fewer connections in the field),
• possibility to realize the installation by a standard heating/pipe fitting company,
• simpler serviceability – all key components are in one unit.

Installation and hydraulic solution

The outdoor unit VWL 75/7.1 is installed on a solid foundation or consoles outside living rooms (best with sufficient distance from windows and neighboring plots for acoustic reasons). A pair of pipes with a heat transfer liquid leads into the house, which are connected to an indoor hydraulic station – typically a module of the VWZ MEH range (hydraulic unit with a circulation pump, safety group, air vent and optionally electric auxiliary heating), which ensures the connection of the heat pump with the heating system of the house (floor heating, radiators) and with the preparation of hot domestic water via an accumulator heater (e.g. the uniSTOR or actoSTOR range). For whom is this model intended

VWL 75/7.1 230 V is a suitable choice for family houses with medium to high heat loss, where the smaller model 55/7.1 would no longer be able to cover the required performance on the coldest days, but at the same time a three-phase connection is not required as with larger units of the range (e.g. VWL 115/7.1). Thanks to the single-phase 230 V connection, this unit is often the most practical choice during renovations, where a gas boiler is replaced by a heat pump and there is no interest in solving new power lines from the electricity meter.

Eco-friendliness and operating costs

The refrigerant R290 (propane) has negligible impact on global warming compared to commonly used fluorinated refrigerants (R410A, R32) and its use also allows achieving higher heating water temperatures with good efficiency even at low outside temperatures. The high SCOP value (up to 4,87 in a low-temperature system) means that the heat pump produces almost 5 times more thermal energy on average during the season than the amount of electrical energy it consumes itself – this is reflected in a noticeable saving compared to electric direct heating and also compared to older gas or oil boilers, especially in combination with floor heating or larger radiators designed for lower heating water temperatures.

Do I need anything else for this unit?

Yes. The outdoor unit VWL 75/7.1 alone does not work independently – an indoor hydraulic station (e.g. VWZ MEH), optionally a hot water storage tank and a regulator are needed. These components are selected according to the specific heating system of the house.

Is a refrigeration certificate required for installation?

No, because it is a monoblock version with refrigerant enclosed directly in the outdoor unit, standard installation/heating qualifications are sufficient on the heating piping side. The electrical part must be connected by an electrician with the appropriate qualification.

What is the difference compared to the model VWL 55/7.1?

VWL 75/7.1 has a higher rated heating capacity and is intended for buildings with higher heat loss. The physical dimensions of the unit (750 × 1104 × 454 mm) are the same for both models, the difference is mainly in the compressor power and the associated consumption and noise at full load.

Can the unit be used for cooling in summer?

Nevertheless, the exact placement and distance from the windows of neighboring properties should still be considered according to the current noise legislation.

Is an electric booster heater necessary?

With a properly designed system and a bivalent point selected by the installation company, the aroTHERM pro can meet the heating demand of the house even at low temperatures without the need for an electric booster heater. However, in extremely cold areas or in the case of an undersized capacity, the hydraulic station may include an additional electric heater as a backup.
