From experience, I know that the vast majority of clogs and HT pipe failures are not random – they are the result of neglected preventive maintenance or incorrect installation, which sooner or later manifests itself. Why HT pipe clogging is even a risk
Before we get to prevention and cleaning, it is important to understand why clogging occurs in the first place. The HT system (High Temperature – pipe resistant to temperatures up to 95 °C) is designed for the safe discharge of waste water from all household appliances. Despite being a relatively simple gravity system, there are several reasons why waste can accumulate in it.
Fat deposits are the most common cause of clogs in kitchens. Hot fat flows in liquid form into the drain, but cools and solidifies in the cooler pipe – it sticks to the pipe walls and gradually narrows the flow diameter. In restaurants, I have seen DN 110 pipes narrowed to an effective diameter of less than 40 mm after two years of operation without cleaning.
Hair and fiber deposits are a problem mainly behind bathtubs, shower enclosures, and sinks. Hair catches on irregularities, rubber seals in traps, or protrusions in the pipe. When combined with soap film and limescale, a solid blockage forms that cannot be removed by simple rinsing with water.
Limescale is a problem mainly in areas with hard water. Calcium deposits build up on the pipe walls and create a rough surface that catches more waste. In combination with soap residues and fat, limescale can significantly reduce the pipe's passability.
Incorrect pipe slope is an installation error that only becomes apparent after months or even years of operation. If the horizontal pipe has an insufficient slope (less than 1 % for DN 110, i.e., less than 10 mm per meter) or even a reverse slope, solid waste components stop and settle in the pipe. Foreign objects – rags, wet wipes, hygiene products, or children's toys – are a classic source of sudden clogs. Many wet wipes are labeled as flushable, but in practice, they do not dissolve in the pipe and form the core of a clog.
Preventive maintenance: what to do regularly to avoid clogging
Prevention is always cheaper than solving a problem. This is especially true for waste systems built into the structure of a building, where every intervention involves demolition work. The following measures will help you keep your HT pipe clear and functional for many years.
Daily and weekly prevention at home
The simplest thing you can do every day is to not flush anything down the drain that does not belong there. Food scraps, fats and oils, hygiene products, and wet wipes all belong in the trash, not in the sewer. In the kitchen, use a fat trap or strainer on the sink to catch larger solid particles.
Once a week, it is a good idea to flush all drains with hot water (70–80 °C) for at least two minutes. Hot water melts fat deposits in the trap section and adjacent pipe. In the kitchen, you can let hot water run from the tap after cooking – it is not just about awareness, but about real pipe maintenance.
Monthly maintenance with natural products
Once a month, I recommend biological or natural cleaning. A combination of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar is a proven method: pour 100 g of baking soda into the drain, add 200 ml of white vinegar, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, and then rinse with hot water. This combination will loosen organic deposits and eliminate unpleasant odors.
For kitchen sinks with harder fat deposits, you can use a soda solution (not baking soda, but washing soda – Na₂CO₃): mix 50 g of soda with hot water and pour it into the drain. Washing soda has a stronger degreasing effect than baking soda and is still gentle on PVC pipes.
Quarterly inspection of traps
Every three months, you should physically inspect and clean the traps under sinks, bathtubs, and shower enclosures. Most modern traps have a removable closure or the entire lower part, which can be disassembled without tools. Empty the trap, clean it with a brush, check the rubber seals, and reassemble. The whole operation takes 5–10 minutes and can prevent a multi-month drainage issue.
During this inspection, notice whether more solid material is accumulating in the trap than usual – this may be a sign of a problem deeper in the pipe, where waste is catching and returning to the trap.
Annual inspection of the entire drainage system
Once a year – ideally in spring or autumn – I recommend a comprehensive inspection of the entire drainage system. In a single-family home, this includes checking all visible pipe sections, checking connections and seals, a flow test (run full water flow and monitor the drainage speed), and possibly using pressure cleaning or a snake.
It is particularly worth using the HT cleaning fitting during this annual inspection – a shaped fitting that is incorporated into accessible locations in the system design and allows the insertion of a cleaning snake or pressure hose directly into the pipe without the need for disassembly. How to recognize the beginning of a blockage before a problem occurs
The pipe gives you signals long before it is completely blocked. You just need to know how to read them.
Slow drainage is the first sign. If water drains from the sink or bathtub more slowly than usual, it is a clear sign of reduced flow. Do not wait until the drainage stops completely – at this stage, a relatively simple intervention is sufficient.
Gurgling and air bubbles in the drain or in the toilet bowl indicate problems with system venting or partial blockage somewhere in the shared pipe section. Air that cannot escape the normal way finds its way through the siphon water seal – and this can dry out the seal, opening the way for sewer gases into the room.
Unpleasant odors from drains that are otherwise functional may indicate either a dry siphon (in rarely used fixtures) or the accumulation of organic waste in the pipe, where it begins to decompose. In the case of a toilet, the odor may also indicate problems with the seal under the bowl.
Gurgling or bubbling in the pipe when flushing a neighboring fixture is a classic sign of insufficient system venting, but it can also indicate a partial blockage in the shared vertical section.
HT pipe cleaning methods: from the simplest to professional
Depending on the severity of the blockage, we choose different methods. Here is an overview from the least invasive to professional technologies.
1. Plunger (pressure and vacuum)
The oldest and still effective method for blockages in the siphon or immediate vicinity. A rubber plunger creates alternating pressure and vacuum forces that break up the blockage. It is important to cover the overflow of the sink with a wet hand to prevent air leakage, otherwise the plunger will not create sufficient pressure. It works for siphon blockages and shallow blockages in horizontal drainage.
2. Manual snake (drain auger)
A manual steel snake (1.2–1.5 m) is good for blockages up to a distance of 1–1.5 m from the drain. You insert it into the drain, turn it, and gradually push it deeper. The snake either breaks up the blockage or drills into it, and you pull it out along with the content. Not suitable for deeper blockages or for horizontal sections with multiple bends.
3. Mechanical motorized snake
A professional motorized snake (usually 15–30 m) can clean even long horizontal sections. It is mostly used by heating and plumbing companies. To access the pipe in the wall or floor, the HT cleaning fitting is essential, which allows the snake to be inserted without disassembling the entire section. This fitting is placed at accessible locations – in shafts, behind inspection panels, or under the sink.
4. Pressure cleaning (high-pressure jet)
High-pressure water (pressure 100–250 bar) can remove even hard fat and lime deposits that do not respond to a mechanical snake. A hose with a nozzle is inserted into the pipe and the nozzle shoots water backward at an angle, which moves it forward while cleaning the walls. It is the most effective method for kitchen drains suffering from clogs in restaurants or for pipes where deposits have accumulated over years. The disadvantage is the cost and the need for professional equipment.
5. Chemical cleaning
Lye-based cleaners (containing NaOH – sodium hydroxide) are effective for organic deposits – fat, hair, soap residues. Acid (e.g., acetic or citric acid) is effective for lime deposits. Never mix them – it can lead to an exothermic reaction and damage the pipe. Lye-based cleaners are safe for HT PVC pipe when the manufacturer's instructions are followed, but they must not be reused without flushing, as residual lye in the pipe can damage rubber seals.
Proper placement of cleaning fittings and inspection openings in system design
This is a topic that customers usually address only when their piping stops working – and by then it is too late. In the proper design of a new drainage system, an HT cleaning fitting should be installed on each longer horizontal section (usually every 10–15 m) and at each change of direction where there is no direct access from another location.
In practice, this looks like this: for a vertical drain in a shaft, install a cleaning fitting at the bottom – in the bend, where it transitions from vertical to horizontal. In a long horizontal section (e.g., in a ceiling structure or under the floor), install a cleaning fitting every 10 m. In apartment buildings with multi-storey vertical drains, it is ideal to have an inspection opening on each floor or at least every second floor.

Practical scenarios from practice: what I have seen on customer jobs
Scenario 1: Single-family house, kitchen – clog after two years
The customer called because the kitchen sink was draining extremely slowly and started to back up. The system was built correctly – HT pipes DN 50 with a 2 % slope, connected to a vertical drain DN 110. The problem was obvious at first glance: there was no cleaning fitting installed on the horizontal section (3 meters behind the plaster, accessible through a door in the pantry). The entire 3-meter section was clogged with grease – the effective cross-section was reduced to less than half. Solution: mechanical auger through the trap outlet (3 m was enough), repeated flushing with hot water and lye-based cleaner, and installation of a cleaning fitting at an accessible location at the next opportunity.
Scenario 2: Apartment building, 5th floor – gurgling in the neighbor’s drain
A tenant on the 5th floor complained that every time the toilet on the 4th floor was flushed, water gurgled in the bathroom sink. Cause: partial clogging of the shared vertical DN 110 drain somewhere between the 4th and 5th floors, likely caused by wet wipes. Air could not circulate normally through the vent pipe, and the pressure fluctuation was expressed through the water seal of the toilet on the 5th floor. The restaurant operator called three times a year with the same problem – clogged drain from the kitchen sinks. The cause was systemic: there was no grease trap installed before connecting to the sewer, and the horizontal section had only a 0.5 % slope (instead of the minimum required 1 %). The solution included the installation of a stainless steel grease trap, changing the slope of the transition section, and introducing weekly high-pressure jet cleaning. The frequency of failures dropped to zero. This is an example of how recurring clogs are not bad luck – they are a systemic issue that needs to be addressed at the source.

Cleaning and maintenance according to the type of equipment
WC and toilet bowl
The toilet bowl is the most common source of mechanical clogs caused by foreign objects. Cleaning of the WC always starts with plunging (a special plunger with an attachment for the toilet bowl) and continues with manual or motorized augering. Chemical cleaning is less effective at the WC, as lye needs to act without the presence of water, which is difficult to achieve in a toilet bowl. Prevention: do not flush wet wipes, sanitary tampons, diapers, or food scraps.
Shower and bathtub
The drain of a shower or bathtub is most often clogged by a combination of hair, soap scum, and limescale directly in the trap. Clean the trap mechanically every 2–3 months and flush with an enzymatic cleaner once a month. Preventive strainers before the drain will catch most of the hair before it reaches the trap.
Basin
Basin drains are relatively easy to access thanks to the removable trap. Cleaning is simple and can be done by anyone. Problems arise when the basin is connected by a long horizontal section (e.g., in a bathroom with a pre-installed layout), where soap scum can accumulate. In this case, a mechanical auger or enzymatic cleaner is also appropriate.
Washing machine and dishwasher
Drain hoses of washing machines and dishwashers are commonly connected to the basin trap or to a separate drain. Filters in the washing machine should be cleaned according to the manufacturer's instructions (usually monthly), as they catch fibers that would otherwise travel into the piping. Once a year, it is advisable to run a cleaning cycle at 90 °C with a disinfectant – this also helps with degreasing the internal hose lines.
HT system products that affect cleanliness and maintenance
The choice of the right fittings and their correct placement directly affects how easy (or difficult) it will be to clean and maintain your drainage system.
HT elbow is a fitting that changes the direction of the pipe. Elbows are essential in every drainage system, but their excessive use on horizontal sections increases hydraulic resistance and creates areas where waste can get trapped. The rule applies: the fewer elbows on a horizontal section, the better the flow and the easier the maintenance. If you need to change direction by 90°, it is better to use two 45° elbows than one 87° elbow – the flow is smoother and clogs are less likely.
HT pipe is the basic component of the system. The inner surface of a high-quality HT PVC pipe is smooth, which minimizes the adhesion of deposits. When choosing, focus on the correct diameter – an undersized pipe will clog more quickly. For a toilet, the minimum diameter is DN 100, for a shower DN 50, for a sink DN 32 or DN 40. HT reducer is a fitting for the transition between two different diameters. A properly dimensioned reducer must always be installed in the direction of flow (from smaller to larger diameter), not the other way around. An incorrectly rotated reducer creates a hydraulic step where solid residues can get trapped.
HT plug seals free ends of the pipe – for example, during construction or when a drain is temporarily unused. It is important to always install the correct plug before embedding the pipe in concrete – this prevents construction waste (concrete, mortar) from entering the pipe, which is one of the worst possible sources of permanent clogging.
When to call a professional and when you can handle it yourself
Not every clog requires a professional. But some situations do. Here is a simple decision key:
- You can handle it yourself: slow drainage from one appliance (trap), shallow clogs within reach of a hand auger, simple trap cleaning, regular enzymatic flushing.
- Call a professional: a clog affecting multiple appliances at once (likely a shared drain), gurgling and air bubbles in adjacent appliances, bad odors despite cleaning (possibly a pipe crack), backflow of waste from one appliance when using another (e.g., water from the toilet appears in the shower).
- Call urgently: sewage water leaking from the pipe, partial flooding of the installation, visible pipe damage.

Enzymatic and biological cleaners: a modern approach to preventive maintenance
In recent years, enzymatic and biological cleaners have become increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional chemical products. They contain live bacteria or enzymes that break down organic deposits (fat, proteins, cellulose) directly in the pipe. They are safe for PVC, rubber seals and the environment.
Their disadvantage is slower effectiveness – they are not suitable for acute clogs, but as a preventive measure they work very well. They are usually applied in the evening before bedtime (to allow time to act without dilution by water), once every 2–4 weeks. For kitchen drains, where fat accumulates, these products are one of the best long-term investments.

How often should HT drainage pipes be cleaned in a typical household?
I recommend a basic preventive routine for a typical household: weekly flushing with hot water, monthly enzymatic or soda-vinegar cleaning, quarterly trap cleaning, and an annual comprehensive inspection. If you have a large family, a greasy kitchen or hard water, increase the frequency. The first sign that you are cleaning insufficiently is slower drainage – detect it before the problem worsens.
Is it safe to use lye-based cleaners on HT PVC pipe?
Yes, HT PVC pipe is resistant to lye (NaOH) at normal concentrations and short-term exposure. The problem is the rubber seals in the joints – repeated and prolonged exposure to lye can degrade them. Always follow the recommended exposure time on the label (usually 15–30 minutes), then rinse thoroughly with water. Never mix lye-based cleaner with acid – the reaction is dangerous.
Can I insert a hand auger into HT pipe through a cleaning plug myself?
A hand auger up to 1.5 m in length can be handled by an average DIYer. It is important to know where the cleaning plug (accessible opening) is, unscrew the cover, insert the auger and advance it by rotating. If you meet resistance, do not force it – you may damage the elbow or fitting. Motorized augers or pressure jets should be left to professionals.
What to do if a clog affects multiple appliances at once?
If two or more appliances are not draining at the same time (e.g., a shower and a sink in the same bathroom, or a toilet and a shower), the clog is most likely on the shared section of the pipe after their connection point. In this case, cleaning individual traps will not help – you need to clean the shared horizontal or vertical section. Call a professional with a motorized auger or pressure jet.
Why does my drain clog again after cleaning within a few weeks?
A recurring clog at the same location indicates a systemic problem: either insufficient pipe slope, undersized diameter, poor connection (e.g., a sharp angle fitting), or a location where waste is mechanically trapped (a protrusion, unevenness, broken pipe end). One-time cleaning will not solve this problem. You need to identify the cause – ideally with a pipe camera inspection – and eliminate it.
Is pipe camera inspection necessary only for serious problems?
Pipe camera inspection is useful for every recurring clog, when buying an older property before renovation, or whenever you want to be sure about the condition of the pipe without demolition. The cost of inspection is a fraction of the cost of repairing embedded pipes. After a new installation is completed, camera inspection is also good practice – it detects installation errors before they are buried or concreted.

During a year of work on customer projects, I have seen situations where regular maintenance for a few euros and a few hours a year saved customers thousands of euros on demolition, reconstruction and repairs. The HT drainage system is designed as a long-term, low-maintenance solution – but that does not mean it requires no attention. On the contrary, precisely because most of the pipe is hidden in the wall or under the floor, preventive maintenance is much more important than with visible installations.
The key is a system: daily preventive measures (what does not belong in the waste), monthly biological cleaning, quarterly trap checks and annual system inspection using cleaning plugs. If your system is correctly designed – with the right diameters, slope and cleaning plugs in accessible locations – it will serve you for years without problems.
