Why do HT systems fail at all?
HT piping is designed to last for decades without problems – and if it is installed correctly, it really will. Problems most often arise for three reasons:
- Incorrect installation – wrong pipe slope, unsuitable fittings, insufficiently tightened socket joints, or missing expansion elements.
- Inadequate maintenance – neglected cleaning openings, no regular inspection, accumulation of fat and organic deposits.
- Mechanical damage – cracking during construction work, freezing of the external pipe, excessive load, or incorrect handling during reconstruction.
Each of these scenarios has different symptoms and different solutions. Let's go through them one by one.
1. Clogged drainage pipe
This is by far the most common reason why a customer calls a plumber. Slow water drainage, gurgling in the trap, backflow – these are classic signs of partial or complete clogging.
Clogging causes
In kitchen waste, the main culprit is fat. Greasy water cools down when it comes into contact with the pipe wall and the fat gradually accumulates in irregularities and in areas with weak flow. With an incorrect slope (more on that later), waste can remain in one place and fat deposits form more quickly.
In bathroom waste (sink, shower, bathtub), hair, soap residue and toothpaste are the main culprits. A combination of hair and soap deposits creates a very resistant clog in the trap or elbow that won't dissolve on its own.
In toilet waste, it is usually about damp paper towels, feminine hygiene products, or (which we actually see quite often in practice) hardened, poorly distributed wet deposits due to low flushing frequency.
How to proceed with clogging
The first step is always localization: where exactly did the clogging occur? If the drainage is not working only at one device (e.g. only the sink), the clogging is likely in the trap or in the nearby elbow. If several devices on the same floor are not working, the problem is deeper – in the vertical drainage riser or even in the connection to the house sewer.
With partial clogging in the trap or in the nearby pipe section, try a simple rubber plunger first. The pressure wave often pushes or breaks up the clog. If that is not enough, disassemble the trap and check it manually – most traps are screwed or quarter-turned without tools.
For deeper clogging, the ideal tool is a spiral cleaning spring (so-called snake). You insert it through the HT cleaning piece, which is specifically designed for this – it has an opening plug and allows you to get into the pipe without disassembling it. If the cleaning piece is missing in that section (which is unfortunately very common in older installations), you will have to disassemble the corresponding pipe section.
For heavily greasy kitchen sewerage, a professional hydrodynamic cleaner (Kärcher for sewerage) helps – the high-pressure water jet removes fat deposits from the pipe walls. Chemical cleaners (granules, gels) are a supplementary solution, not a substitute for mechanical cleaning.
2. Odor from the drainage pipe
Odors from the sewer system indoors are unpleasant and unhealthy. They have several typical causes.
Dry trap
This is the most common and simplest case. Every trap works as a water seal: it holds a small amount of water at the bottom that prevents sewer air (full of hydrogen sulfide and other vapors) from entering the room. If the device is not used for a long time (e.g. a sink in a vacation cottage, a shower in a spare bathroom), the water evaporates from the trap and the water seal disappears.
Solution: Simply pour several deciliters of water into the drain. For traps that regularly dry out, a little glycerin also helps – it slows down evaporation. If you only go to the cottage occasionally, pour a tablespoon of cooking oil into all traps before each departure – it creates a film that further slows down evaporation.
Missing ventilation of the riser
The HT drainage system must be ventilated – typically by extending the riser above the roof, or by using an air admittance valve (AVP). Without ventilation, a vacuum is created in the pipe during a flush impulse, which literally sucks water out of the traps and the water seal stops working.
This problem is noticeable by an unpleasant odor after every toilet flush or when a large amount of water drains. The solution is to check whether the vent pipe is indeed led above the roof, or to install an air admittance valve at the top of the vent pipe (in a ventilated space or shaft).
Leaky joints in the vent pipe or in the horizontal piping
If the vent pipe or the horizontal waste pipe is not airtight (crack, improperly seated socket, missing gasket), air from the sewer will seep directly into the building space – even if the traps are in good condition.
This fault is harder to locate, as the leak location may not be visible. A "smell test" helps: close all traps and blow smoke into the vent pipe using a smoke bomb (used by plumbers) or simply wait to see where the smell is most intense. A leaky joint is often revealed by a wet stain at the joint in the case of water leakage.
3. Leaky joints – dripping and water leakage
HT piping is connected using socket joints with rubber O-ring seals. These are very reliable when assembled correctly – but improper installation will cause them to leak from the first day, or start leaking after some time (e.g., due to thermal expansion).
Common mistakes during HT joint installation
- Pushing the pipe fully into the socket – when heated, HT material expands (approximately 0.06 mm per meter and degree Celsius), and piping without an expansion gap (recommended 10–15 mm) will start to push the joint apart. The result is a crack or an open joint.
- O-ring is not in the groove – the gasket may shift or twist during insertion. You cannot see it visually, but the joint will leak from the beginning.
- Unlubricated pipe end – without lubrication (a small amount of liquid soap or specific mounting lubricant is sufficient), the O-ring deforms during insertion. Never use oil or silicone – they degrade the rubber.
- Uneven pipe cut – the cut end of the HT pipe must be properly aligned and beveled to prevent the gasket from shifting during insertion. Always chamfer the edges and bevel the inner edge at 15°.
How to fix a leaking socket joint
If the joint is leaking, disassemble it. Check the condition of the O-ring – if it is deformed, replace it (replacement gaskets are commonly available by diameter: 32, 40, 50, 75, 110 mm). Before reassembling, lubricate the pipe end, check the gasket position in the groove, and insert it with a slight rotational movement. Do not forget to leave an expansion gap.
4. Poor pipe slope and its consequences
This is the most deceptive fault – it does not appear immediately after installation, but after months or even years. HT waste piping must have a precisely defined slope to allow wastewater to drain quickly enough, but not too quickly.
The recommended slope for DN 50 (shower, bathtub) is 2–3 %, for DN 75 and DN 110 (toilet) 1–2 %. Why not more? With too steep a slope, water drains quickly, but solid particles remain at the bottom of the pipe (phenomenon of liquid separation from solids). With too small a slope, water flows slowly and waste settles.
In practice, we see two recurring scenarios:
- Zero or negative slope – this happens when the installer relies only on the eye without a spirit level, or when the pipe sags over time (improper fastening, structural settlement). Water stands in the pipe and decomposes.
- Too steep a slope on long horizontal sections – masons sometimes make the slope "by eye, the steeper the better," which on long runs (over 3–4 meters) causes the flush water from the toilet to drain much faster than the solid content, and the sewer becomes clogged.
Fixing a poor slope is labor-intensive – it usually means disassembling and reinstalling the entire horizontal section with precise measurement. Therefore, it is always worth measuring the slope before embedding or walling in the pipe, not after.
5. Cracked or fractured HT pipe
HT pipe is made of rigid PVC resistant to temperatures up to 80–95 °C (short-term). It does not have to crack if installed properly. When it does crack, there is always a specific cause.
Mechanical damage during construction work
Cutting grooves, drilling, and hammering near pipes – this is the most common way of mechanical damage. HT pipe in a shaft or in a wall groove is relatively protected, but PVC cracks and breaks under hard impact. You will notice a crack by dripping or a wet stain on the ceiling/wall below the pipe.
Solution: The damaged section must be replaced. A short section (e.g., 50 cm HT pipe) can be replaced by inserting a new pipe with bell spigot couplings. Adhesive repair tapes on PVC are only temporary emergency solutions – they do not address structural issues and will peel off with hot wastewater.
Frosting of external piping
HT system is also used for external drainage pipes (e.g., roof gutter drainage or waste running through an unheated garage space). If such a pipe freezes, the water inside expands and the HT pipe cracks – usually along a longitudinal crack.
Frozen external pipes are not a proper solution. External waste should be routed in a thermal insulation jacket, or it should have sufficient slope to allow water to drain after use and not remain standing inside.
Excessive wastewater temperature
Ordinary wastewater (shower, sink, dishwasher, washing machine) is warm, not hot – and HT pipe can handle it without problems. Where the problem arises is when connecting wastewater from a boiler or industrial equipment with a temperature above 95 °C. Repeated exposure to such temperatures softens and deforms the HT material, and eventually causes it to crack. For industrial or extremely hot wastewater, HT material with higher temperature resistance should be used, or a section of stone wool pipe should be added.
6. Incorrect or missing fittings
HT system fittings – elbows, reducers, tees – have precisely defined functions and geometry. Their apparent similarity is misleading.
Incorrect elbow angle
HT elbows are manufactured in various angles: 15°, 30°, 45°, 67°, 87°. The 87° elbow (almost a right angle) is intended only for connections with a short horizontal section where there is sufficient flushing water volume (toilet with a cistern). When connecting a shower, sink, or in long horizontal runs, you should not use an 87° elbow – the result is turbulent flow and a location where waste immediately begins to settle.
The same problem occurs when an 87° elbow is used instead of a 45° tee for a branch. It is very unsuitable from a hydraulic point of view – the flow resistance is significantly higher. Incorrect diameter reduction
If you connect a DN 50 pipe directly to a DN 110 pipe without a proper HT reducer, a sudden change in cross-section occurs, causing water to swirl and waste to settle. The reducer must be eccentric (offset), not concentric (conical) – only an eccentric reducer ensures that the bottom of the pipe remains in the same plane and water drains without trapped deposits.
Missing plug for an unused opening
We often see this in practice during installation, where an opening is left open for a future device (e.g., a planned shower in a basement toilet). An open pipe without an HT plug is a direct entry point for air from the sewer into the interior. Always, always seal every unused outlet with an HT plug.
7. Vibrations and noise from the drainage pipe
HT pipe generates sound vibrations during drainage – this is normal. However, if the noise is pronounced (noticeable thumping, knocking, squeaking), it indicates a problem.
Insufficient or incorrect fastening
HT pipe must be fastened with clamps at specified intervals: for horizontal runs, no more than 10 times the diameter (i.e., DN 110 → every 1.1 m, DN 50 → every 0.5 m). Vertical pipes should be fastened every 1–1.5 m depending on the diameter. A freely hanging or only point-fastened pipe will "dance" and knock against the wall or another pipe during drainage.
Clamps must have a rubber insert (damping) – a metal clamp without rubber transfers vibrations directly into the structure. For a vertical pipe in a living area (e.g., in an apartment building near a stairwell shaft), invest in heavy-duty acoustic clamps and possibly acoustic insulation of the pipe itself.
Dilation and knocking at joints
If the pipe lacks proper dilation points (fixed point + sliding point), thermal expansion forces it to move uncontrollably. The result is knocking at the joints with every hot water flow. The solution is to add properly placed fixed and sliding clamps according to the design plan, or to insert an expansion joint into a long vertical section.
8. Incorrect connection to the sewer vertical pipe
A lateral branch connected to a vertical pipe must always be connected at an angle that follows the flow direction – that is, using a 45° tee or a special Y-tee, never at a right angle (90°). A right-angle connection causes hydraulic shock: the draining water from the apartment collides with the flow in the vertical pipe, creating pressure surges that can siphon siphons and cause noise.
Equally important is that too many devices should not be connected to a single horizontal section before the vertical pipe without a properly dimensioned vertical pipe. A DN 110 vertical pipe is sufficient for a standard apartment (toilet, shower, sink, floor drain), but for multiple apartments per floor, a hydraulic calculation is necessary.
9. Problems caused by incorrect installation of a cleaning tee
A cleaning tee is a maintenance fitting with a removable plug, allowing access to the pipe in case of a blockage without dismantling it. If an HT cleaning tee is not installed, pipe maintenance is significantly complicated. However, even if it is installed, it can cause problems if installed incorrectly.
- Plug is not tightened – leaks occur during large water outflow or under pressure in the pipe.
- Cleaning piece is in an inaccessible location – in a built-in groove without access doors, behind a drywall wall without a maintenance opening. In practice, this means that in case of a blockage, the wall must be broken open.
- Missing gasket under the plug – with plastic plugs with rubber gaskets, always check it before tightening.
The cleaning piece should always be placed in an accessible location – at each floor level on a vertical stack, every 15 m on long horizontal sections, and at each direction change of more than 45°. If it is missing in an existing pipe, it can be added using a saddle connection (only if the pipe diameter is sufficient).
10. Faults at the connection to the toilet and waste systems
Connecting a toilet to the waste pipe has its own specifics. Common errors include:
- Too long toilet outlet without support – the toilet bowl is heavy, and with an incorrectly chosen cantilevered suspended toilet without proper load-bearing structure, the outlet is overloaded and the connecting pipe cracks.
- Excentric toilet connection without gasket – the offset connection (eccentric sleeve) when connecting the toilet must be installed with a gasket and with the final position of the floor level. If the toilet is connected before laying the floor, after laying the floor the height does not match and the sleeve deforms.
- Elbow behind the toilet at the wrong angle – the HT elbow behind the toilet cistern must point in the correct slope; for a direct vertical connection to the floor, an 87° elbow is used, for a wall connection, 87° or 67° depending on the distance to the stack.
Preventive maintenance of the HT system – what to do to avoid faults
From my experience, a simple rule applies: every fault you resolve after years of neglected maintenance costs five times more than regular inspection. Here are specific steps:
- Once a year inspect visible parts of the pipe in the basement, in the shaft and behind the sinks – check for any wet spots, condensation, or color changes on the wall (signs of a leak).
- Once every 2–3 years have the horizontal pipe cleaned with a hydrodynamic cleaner, especially if there is a greasy kitchen in the building.
- Once a year flush the kitchen sink trap with hot water and a drop of soap – and never pour frying oil into the sink. Fat is the number one enemy of any drainage system.
- Always install a hair trap in the shower trap – it catches hair before it enters the pipe and you can clean it once a week without tools.

When you don't know where the problem is, proceed systematically from the device to the stack:
- Check the device trap – remove it, clean it, and reinstall it.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about faults in the HT waste system
Can I use chemicals to unclog an HT pipe?
Yes, chemical agents (NaOH granules, enzymatic agents) can be used as an additional method for fat deposits or organic material. HT PVC is resistant to common alkaline cleaners. However, never use sulfuric acid or strong acids – they can damage the rubber seals in the connections. Remember: chemicals only partially dissolve a clogged pipe, mechanical cleaning is always more effective.
How long does HT pipe last and when should it be replaced?
Properly installed HT pipe usually lasts 50 years or more – the theoretical lifespan of PVC is 100 years under proper operating conditions. Replacement is necessary in case of mechanical damage, corrosion of connections (in industrial environments with aggressive substances), or if the pipes are from before 1990 (old PVC may be more brittle and may not meet today's standards). During the renovation of an old apartment block, it is worth doing a complete replacement of the stack, as access is already open.
What angle of elbow should I use behind the toilet?
For a toilet bowl with a horizontal outlet (most modern toilets), an HT elbow of 87° (for floor connection) or 45°/67° (for wall connection) is used behind the bowl. It depends on the distance to the stack and the height of the waste pipe. Never use an 87° elbow on a long horizontal run without sufficient flushing – clogging is a matter of weeks.
What to do if my HT pipe cracked in a built-in groove?
The first step is to stop the damage: find out which devices lead to the damaged section and stop using them. Then locate the fault – a wet spot or a crack in the wall will indicate the location. You will have to open the groove (or partition) in the area of the fault. Replace the damaged section of the pipe and, when reinstalling, do not forget to leave the correct expansion gap. Before reburying, perform a pressure test (fill with water and wait 30 minutes).
Why is my waste working after years, but it smells like a sewer?
The most common cause is a dry trap in one of the devices (e.g., a rarely used sink in the basement). Another cause may be a loose or leaking flange in the stack behind a drywall wall – over the years, temperature and expansion can gradually loosen the connection. A third possibility is a non-functional stack ventilation – check if the vent pipe above the roof is clear (not clogged by bird nests or snow).
Is it normal for the HT pipe to make noise when draining?
Mild noise is normal – water flowing through the pipe makes sound.
