1. Do I need a filter at all in my home water system? Isn't a pressure tank enough?

This is question number one. The answer is almost always: yes, you need a filter – and the sooner you install it, the fewer problems you will have later. A pressure tank (hydropneumatic vessel) performs a completely different function than a filter. The tank evens out pressure surges and reduces the number of pump switch-ons. A filter removes solid impurities, sand, sludge, rust, and other mechanical contaminants from the water.

3. What pressure can cast iron filters withstand? Is this important for a home water system?

Yes, it is very important. Standard cast iron filters for home use are rated for operating pressures of 6 to 16 bar, while most home water systems operate in the range of 2.5 to 5 bar. From the perspective of pressure, cast iron filters in this application operate with a significant safety margin.

Problems arise when pressure exceeds the safe limit due to a faulty pressure switch or protection failure. In such a case, a plastic filter may crack – and this is a real scenario I have seen several times. A cast iron body can handle such a situation much better. Seals and the insert may suffer, but the body itself will not tear.

When selecting a filter, always check the nominal operating pressure (PN – Pressure Nominal) and make sure your water system does not operate close to it. A safe value is up to 70% of the nominal pressure during continuous operation.

4. Where exactly should a cast iron filter be placed in the water system layout?

This is a question where the most mistakes are made. The correct position of the filter depends on what the filter does and what it protects.

A mechanical coarse filter (prefilter) should be placed after the pump and before the pressure tank, or before the water enters the internal distribution system. The reason is simple: we want to capture impurities before they reach the tank and the distribution system. Some plumbers place the filter after the tank – this is also possible, but then the tank operates with dirty water and sediment can settle inside it.

5. Why does a cast iron filter lose pressure over time or show an unexpected pressure drop?

This is a very common scenario. A customer calls saying they had good pressure, but now the water is weak, the pump runs constantly, and flow meters show lower values. The cause is usually simple: a clogged filter insert.

Every filter has a so-called differential pressure – the difference in pressure before and after the filter. When the insert is clean, this difference is minimal (usually 0.05 – 0.2 bar). 6. Can I use a cast iron filter with hard water from a well?

Yes, you can – but you must expect that hard water accelerates filter clogging and can cause problems with limescale buildup on the internal surfaces of the filter and the filter insert. The cast iron body itself handles limescale well – it is mechanically strong and the internal surfaces are either glazed or coated with an anti-corrosion layer.

Problems arise when water with high calcium and magnesium content passes through the filter mesh and minerals settle on it. The mesh literally becomes "cemented" and regular mechanical cleaning is no longer sufficient. In such cases, you need to soak the mesh in diluted citric or acetic acid for several hours to dissolve the scale.

7. What thread size (dimension) do I need? How do I understand the markings 3/4", 1", DN25, DN40?

  • 1/2" (DN15): The smallest standard size, rarely sufficient for a home water system. The flow is very limited.

Be careful with one common pitfall: the "inch" thread marking (3/4", 1", etc.) corresponds to the British Whitworth standard (G-thread), not the actual diameter in inches. 8. How long does a cast iron filter last without replacement?

The body of a cast iron filter will last for decades with proper maintenance – it is not uncommon to find cast iron filters from the 1980s in old family homes that are still fully functional. Cast iron is an extremely durable material, provided it does not come into contact with highly aggressive water (low pH, high content of aggressive CO₂).

9. Can I use a cast iron filter outdoors, for example in a garden water pump house or in an unheated well house?

This is an important question that is often underestimated. Cast iron itself is frost-resistant – but the water inside the filter is not. If water remains standing in the filter during freezing weather, it will freeze, expand and may crack the filter body or dislodge the lid. 12. Are cast iron filters suitable for drinking water? Which certifications should you look for?

This is a question where I must be precise. Cast iron filters are suitable for contact with drinking water only if they are properly certified. Look for these markings:

  • WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme): A British certification, recognized also on the European market.
  • KTW / W270: A German standard for materials in contact with drinking water.
  • ACS (Attestation de Conformité Sanitaire): A French certification.
  • CE marking according to the construction products directive – in Slovakia, this is a relevant base, but by itself it does not guarantee suitability for drinking water.

The internal surfaces of the cast iron filter must be coated with an approved protective layer – usually an epoxy coating or glaze certified for contact with drinking water. If these details are not provided in the documentation, use the filter only for utility water (garden, flushing).

13. What to do if the filter is leaking – where to look for the cause?

You need to know how to work with a threading tool, properly seal the threads, and check the tightness after starting the system.

I recommend hiring a professional in these cases:

  • First installation of a filter into an existing pipe system, where a new branch or cut-off is required.
  • If you are unsure about the thread size or filtration fineness you need.
