Step-by-step installation of a cast iron filter for a home water system

A cast iron filter is one of the most reliable components of the entire home water system. However, if it is installed incorrectly, even the highest quality unit will not prevent water leaks, pressure loss, or rapid damage to the filter insert. In practice, I have encountered dozens of cases where a homeowner bought a solid cast iron filter, had it installed by a neighbor who is handy with tools, and a month later dealt with a flooded boiler room or a sudden drop in water pressure. What you will need – tools and materials

Before you start, prepare everything within reach. Interrupting work halfway due to a missing tape or wrench always involves risk – either the pipe will remain open longer than necessary, or you will improvise, and improvisation with water supply lines often leads to leaks.

  • Adjustable pipe wrenches (2 pcs) – one holds the filter body or coupling, the other tightens the nut. The size depends on the pipe diameter, but for typical single-family homes (DN 25 – DN 40) you can manage with wrenches up to 50 mm jaw width.
  • Teflon tape (PTFE) – the basic sealing material for threaded connections. Use tape at least 19 mm wide and 0.1 mm thick. Cheap thin tapes tend to tear quickly when tightening.
  • Flax rope + thread sealant – for older or larger thread sizes (3/4" and above), the combination of rope and sealing paste is more reliable than Teflon tape alone.
  • Pressure gauge (manometer) – without it, you cannot perform a pressure test. Install it temporarily after the filter, or use a calibrated hand gauge with a ball valve.
  • Drill with masonry bits – if you are mounting the filter on the wall using consoles or a cast iron bracket.
  • Screwdriver, pliers, utility knife – for preparing seals and mounting consoles.
  • Water container (bucket) – when disconnecting the pipe, some water will always remain in the pipe; the bucket will catch what drips out when loosening the connections.
  • Flat rubber gasket / O-rings – most cast iron filters include an O-ring under the filter cup; check whether it was supplied and have a spare one ready.
  • Closure valve (ball or gate type) – ideally install one before and one after the filter, if they are not already there.

Where to place the filter – choosing the correct location in the system

A cast iron filter is always installed on the cold water supply line, as close as possible to the point of entry into the house or after the pump of the home water system. In most single-family homes, the ideal location is in the boiler room, technical room, or at the point where the pipe enters the basement. The reason is simple: you need to clean the filter and inspect the filter insert regularly – if it is in an inaccessible location (behind drywall, in a cramped shaft), you will keep postponing it until the filter starts to restrict the flow.

A few rules for the correct location:

  • The filter must always be accessible – a minimum working distance of 15–20 cm in front of the filter cup is required to allow you to unscrew it when replacing the insert.
  • Cup pointing downward – most cast iron filters are designed so that the cup (plastic or metal bowl, where the insert is located) hangs downward. Inverting the position may prevent proper settling of impurities.
  • After the pump, not before it – the pump of the home water system draws water from the well or tank; a filter placed before the pump would be exposed to negative pressure and could deform or leak. The correct position is after the pump output, on the supply line to the house.
  • Before the expansion tank or pressure tank – a filter placed after the pressure tank still works, but in the case of a faulty filter insert, contaminated water could flow directly to the consumption points. Better protection is achieved before the pressure tank.
  • Horizontal or vertical? – most common cast iron filters are designed for horizontal installation (threads on the sides, cup downward). Some types allow vertical installation as well, but always check the specific model's manual.

Pipeline preparation and water shut-off

Before any work on the water supply system, the first step is to shut off the water. Close the main inlet valve or stop the water pump. Then open a tap somewhere in the house – a bathroom faucet or garden tap – to relieve the pressure in the pipes. Do not open the filter directly under pressure; even a seemingly small pressure of 2–3 bar can cause water to spray several meters high when you loosen the filter nut.

After depressurization, let the remaining water drain from the pipe into a bucket. If you are installing a filter at a location where there was none before (a new connection, not a replacement), you will need to cut the pipe. The procedure depends on the material:

  • Steel threaded pipe – cut by threading; loosen the nearest coupling or threaded connection. Be careful, as with old steel pipes, the thread may be seized in the pipe wall, or the pipe may be corroded and you should expect to replace several sections.
  • Copper pipe – cut using a pipe cutter (not a saw, which leaves splinters). Then fit threaded fittings (fittings with external threads) by soldering or pressing (press-fit).
  • Plastic (PPR, PEX) pipe – cut with special pipe cutters and fit threaded fittings suitable for the material (welded, pressed or clip-on).

The duration of the shut-off depends on the scope of the work. For a standard filter replacement (same size), it takes 10–20 minutes. For a new installation with pipe preparation and fitting of taps, expect 1–2 hours.

Mounting and securing the filter body

A cast iron filter is heavier than a plastic one of the same size. A standard domestic filter DN 25 (1") in cast iron weighs 1.5 to 3 kg without water; larger DN 40 or DN 50 filters can reach 5–8 kg. This is not negligible – hanging the entire filter on the pipe without additional securing puts constant load on the threads and connections, which over time leads to micro-movements and leaks. Therefore, it is recommended to secure the filter body to the wall using brackets or a wall bracket at least at one point.

Securing procedure:

  • Place the filter at the installation location and mark its position on the wall (with a pencil or a piece of masking tape).
  • Choose suitable anchors depending on the wall material: wall anchors for concrete, chemical anchors for masonry, or a steel bracket mounted on a steel structure.
  • Drill holes (drill bit size according to the anchor), install the anchors and mount the bracket or wall bracket.
  • Secure the filter body in the bracket, but tighten it fully only after connecting it to the pipe, so you can make minor adjustments to its position.

Applying sealing to threads – Teflon vs. hemp

This is the step where the most mistakes are made, and yet the procedure is simple once you understand it correctly.

Teflon tape (PTFE): Wrap the tape in the direction of the thread – that is, the direction in which you will be tightening. If you wrap the tape in the opposite direction, it will unwind during tightening and the sealing will not work. The number of turns depends on the quality of the tape and the thread size; for 3/4" and 1" threads, use 5–8 layers. For larger sizes (1 1/4" and above), I recommend using hemp instead.

Hemp + sealing compound: Wrap the hemp around the external thread (the one that is being tightened into the pipe) and press it into the thread. Not too much – about 3–5 strands fully covering the thread. Then apply a thin layer of sealing compound on top. This method is more resistant to temperature fluctuations and vibrations than Teflon alone.

Never mix both methods – either Teflon or hemp with compound. A combination can cause the thread to become too thick and prevent tightening to the end.

Filter installation – step by step

We are now approaching the core of the process. Proceed in the following order:

Step 1 – Unthreading the filter basket and removing the insert

Before connecting the filter to the pipe, unthread the filter basket (filter cup) and remove the filter insert. Reason: if you accidentally deform the basket or damage the O-ring seal under the basket during installation (tightening the threads), you will only discover it during the pressure test, when water starts dripping. It is better to check the condition of the O-ring in advance. The O-ring should be elastic, without cracks and fit properly in the groove. If it is in any way damaged, replace it before installation.

Step 2 – Determining the flow direction

Every cast iron filter has the flow direction marked – either by an embossed or cast arrow on the cast iron body, or by the text IN/OUT. The inlet (input) is always the side where water comes from the pump or water supply. The outlet leads into the house. Reversing the inlet and outlet will cause the filter to not filter properly – dirt will accumulate on the wrong side of the insert and the filter will clog much faster. In the worst case, with certain types of inserts (with asymmetric filtration), water will pass through the filter without any filtration.

Step 3 – Applying sealing and tightening

Wrap PTFE tape or hemp around the external thread of the fitting/pipe (not on the internal thread of the filter body – this is a mistake people make surprisingly often). Tighten the filter by hand until you feel resistance – then tighten further using a wrench. For standard 1" threads, an additional 1.5 to 2 turns with a wrench after hand tightening is sufficient. Do not over-tighten – cast iron is strong, but the threads can be torn out if you use a wrench with an extended handle.

Step 4 – Connecting the taps

If you have also installed ball valves before the filter installation (which I strongly recommend), tighten them in the same way. A ball valve before the filter allows you to isolate the filter without having to stop the entire pump. This is extremely useful when replacing the filter insert or troubleshooting an issue.

Step 5 – Reinstalling the Bonnet and Gasket

After successfully installing the filter body, reinsert the filter insert and screw the bonnet on by hand – not with a wrench. The bonnet body is plastic (even on a cast iron filter) and can be easily damaged. Tighten only by hand, or use a rubber strap for better grip if needed. The bonnet should be tight – but not over-tightened. The O-ring should be flat in the groove and ensure a seal without the need for excessive tightening.

Step 6 – Inspection Before Filling

Before opening the tap, perform a visual inspection: are all threads tightened? Is the bonnet in place? Is the flow direction correct? Are both ball valves before and after the filter closed?

Filling and Pressure Test

Filling should never be done quickly or unexpectedly. Open the tap before the filter slowly – just a quarter turn – and watch for any immediate water dripping at any connection. If everything is dry, open the tap halfway and observe for a while. Finally, open it fully and repeat the visual inspection of all connections.

Now open the tap after the filter – water will flow into the house plumbing. The drain tap you left open during purging (e.g., a bathroom tap) now serves to vent air from the pipe. Let it run until a smooth stream of water without air bubbles is achieved.

Pressure test: If you have a pressure gauge installed (or a temporary hand pressure gauge connected after the filter), monitor the pressure while the pump is running. A typical household water system maintains a pressure of 2.0–4.5 bar depending on the pressure switch setting. A new cast iron filter should not cause a pressure drop greater than 0.1–0.3 bar at the rated flow rate. A higher drop indicates that the filter insert is too fine for the given pipe or that the insert is installed backwards.

Let the system run for 10–15 minutes and then recheck all connections – this time placing a paper towel next to them. Micro-drips are much easier to see on paper than with the naked eye on wet metal. If you find a damp spot, shut down the system, tighten the corresponding connection by another half turn, and repeat the process.

Common Installation Mistakes – From Experience

Over the years of working with custom installations, I have seen a number of recurring mistakes. Here are the most common ones:

  • Reversed flow direction – leads to rapid clogging of the insert and in some cases to no filtration at all. Always check the arrow on the filter body.
  • Over-tightening the bonnet with a wrench – the plastic threaded part of the bonnet can crack or break. The bonnet must be tightened by hand only.
  • Missing mounting – the filter is hanging only on the pipe. After a year, the connections will be loose and leaking.
  • Improperly wound Teflon tape – wound in the wrong direction or with too few turns. Result: a leaking thread immediately or after a few days.
  • Incorrect position (bonnet up) – with the bonnet pointing upward, dirt accumulates around the outlet and easily enters the distribution. Always install the bonnet downward.
  • Installing a filter without valves – every replacement of the filter insert requires shutting down the entire system. With valves before and after the filter, the replacement takes 5 minutes; without them, it takes half an hour.
  • Choosing an insert that is too fine for rough water – if the well water contains sand and silt, a 5 μm insert will clog within a few days. What to Do After Installation – First Days of Operation

After a successful installation and pressure test, don't forget:

  • Monitor the filter visually for the first 48 hours – small leaks may appear only after a few hours under pressure, as the seal settles in.
  • Check the bonnet after the first day – a new cast iron filter may tint the water on its first run (if the insert is made of non-woven fabric, it may release a small amount of fibers). Let the first few liters flow into a bucket and pour them away.

Don't overdo it – the maximum operating pressure of standard cast iron filters is 10–16 bar, but household water pumps are typically set to 4–6 bar.

Special Considerations When Replacing an Old Filter with a New One

If you are replacing an old filter with a new one (e.g., after its service life or due to a failure), the procedure is slightly different from a new installation. An old filter may be welded, corroded, or encrusted with limescale – literally grown into the pipe. In such a case:

  • Try spraying WD-40 or a similar penetrating lubricant on the threads and let it sit for 15–20 minutes.
  • If the thread still cannot be loosened, use heat (a propane torch) – briefly heating the cast iron body will slightly expand the metal and release the thread. Be careful with plastic parts and seals in the vicinity.
  • In extreme cases, if the filter is permanently frozen in the pipe (corrosion has bonded the metals together), it is better to cut the pipe and install a new section with a new filter, rather than risk damaging the pipe thread.
  • When replacing, also inspect the condition of the pipe around the filter – if the pipe threads are worn or the pipe is corroded, it is the right time to replace the pipe section as well.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do I need to shut off the entire house from water when installing a cast iron filter?

Yes, when connecting the filter to the pipe, you must close the water supply – otherwise, you will be working under pressure and risk a leak or injury. If you have a valve before the filter (or near the inlet), it is enough to close that valve and you do not need to shut off the entire water supply. This is why installing a shut-off valve before the filter is so important not only during installation, but also for every subsequent cartridge replacement.

How much Teflon tape is needed for a cast iron filter thread?

For a standard 3/4" thread, 5–6 turns of 19 mm wide and 0.1 mm thick Teflon tape is sufficient. For a 1" thread, use 6–8 turns. For larger diameters (1 1/4" and above), I recommend using hemp tape with sealing compound, as Teflon tape may not ensure even sealing at larger diameters.
