When renovating your bathroom or replacing old faucets, you will sooner or later face a question that seems simple but in practice determines the entire design, comfort, and installation costs: should the faucet be wall-mounted or deck-mounted? Both types have a solid place in the market, each with its own advantages and disadvantages — and neither is universally better. It depends on the type of installation, the condition of the walls, the type of sanitary equipment, the budget, and also on what you expect visually and functionally from the bathroom.

Basic Principle: What Is a Wall-mounted and What Is a Deck-mounted Faucet

Before we dive into the comparison, it is important to clarify the terminology, as these terms are sometimes mixed up or misused in practice.

Deck-mounted faucet (sometimes also called standing or surface-mounted) is a faucet that is fully visible. The body of the faucet stands on the sink, countertop, or edge of the bathtub, or on a stand next to the bathtub. The supply lines for hot and cold water are usually hidden under the sink or in the wall space under the bathtub, but the body itself is mounted on the surface. The connecting set leads from the faucet down to the shut-off valves.

Wall-mounted faucet has the entire mechanism — the body with a cartridge or thermostat — built into the wall. From the outside, you only see the cover (rosette), lever or rotating knob, and the spout or shower holder. All piping, seals, and mechanical base are hidden in the wall.

This distinction is crucial, as it influences every subsequent step — from the bathroom design, through the plumber's work, to later maintenance.

Deck-mounted Faucet: Advantages, Disadvantages, and Where to Use It

The deck-mounted faucet is a historically older type and is still much more widespread — not only in older homes, but also in new constructions, where there was no space or desire for a wall-mounted installation. Its main advantage is the simplicity of installation and the availability of replacement.

Technical Parameters of a Deck-mounted Faucet

A typical deck-mounted faucet for a sink or countertop has one hole in the countertop (single-hole installation) or three holes (three-hole installation for separate hot, cold, and drain). In today's practice, single-hole faucets with an integrated mixing mechanism dominate. Installation is done via a mounting nut from the underside of the countertop. The water supply is handled by flexible hoses (connecting hoses) with an internal thread of 3/8" or 1/2", which are connected to angle valves under the sink.

Important dimensions: the distance of the faucet axis from the wall on a sink with a flat countertop is usually not critical — the faucet simply stands where the hole is. However, for bathtub deck-mounted faucets, we usually talk about a center-to-center distance of 15 cm (standard bathtub hole) — this distance must match precisely. Practical example: A customer renovated a bathroom in a panel apartment from the 80s. The original piping was run under the plaster, and the outlet was on the wall behind the sink. Instead of tearing down the wall and doing a wall-mounted installation, we simply left the outlet, added angle valves, and installed a deck-mounted faucet. The entire installation took two hours, without any construction work.

For a kitchen sink or bathroom countertop, a deck-mounted faucet is almost always the first choice.   • With a lower budget — a deck-mounted faucet is usually cheaper and its replacement is simple

Disadvantages of a wall-mounted faucet

The main drawback is aesthetics in certain types of bathrooms. If you have clean, minimalist surfaces without visible fixtures, a wall-mounted faucet always sticks out a bit – it is a physical object standing on the countertop or sink. Another problem arises with wall-mounted sinks – for example, with suspended sinks without a countertop, where there is simply no place for the faucet to stand. In such cases, you have to choose a built-in installation, or place the wall-mounted faucet on the wall (which is technically a different type – a wall-mounted faucet).

Built-in faucet: advantages, disadvantages and where to use it

A built-in faucet is currently synonymous with a modern, clean bathroom. The entire device is hidden in the wall, leaving only a thin, shaped escutcheon, lever, and spout visible on the surface. This type of installation is more complex and expensive – but the result is aesthetically on a completely different level.

How a built-in faucet works technically

The basis of a built-in faucet is the so-called installation box (sometimes called a built-in box or installation set). A cartridge or thermostatic unit is installed in this box. The box is embedded in a prepared cavity in the wall and the hot and cold water supplies are brought in from inside. After completing the tiling and checking the tightness, the external cover with the lever – the escutcheon – is mounted.

Key technical requirement: the wall must be thick enough to accommodate the installation box. The standard depth of the box ranges from 55 to 80 mm. This means that in a thin partition wall of 7–8 cm, the box may not fit at all – or it may protrude from the back side of the wall into the adjacent room. This is one of the most common problems we encounter during installation: the customer buys a built-in faucet, and only then realizes that the wall is too thin.

Another technical detail: built-in installation requires precise positioning of the water supplies. The axial distance between the hot and cold water inlets must be 150 mm (±2 mm), unless the manufacturer of the faucet specifies otherwise. A deviation greater than 5 mm can cause the hoses or adapters to be impossible to install, or to be installed with noticeable tension – which can later lead to water leakage.

Types of built-in faucets

There are several variants of built-in installation on the market:

  • Single-lever built-in faucet – classic design, one lever controls temperature and flow, the most accessible variant
  • Thermostatic built-in faucet – separate control of temperature (thermostat) and flow (shut-off valve), higher comfort and safety for adults and children
  • Built-in faucet for a shower – connects to a shower set, showerhead or rain shower head, without an outlet for filling the bathtub
  • Built-in bathtub faucet – combined, allows switching between bathtub outlet and shower

In practice, we most often encounter built-in faucets during the renovation of shower areas and bathtubs in modern bathrooms. Advantages of a built-in faucet

  • Clean, minimalist appearance – no visible pipes, no body protruding from the countertop
  • Hygiene – fewer corners and gaps where limescale or mold can accumulate
  • Durability – the mechanics protected inside the wall are less exposed to external influences
  • Suitability for suspended sinks – a faucet in the wall is an ideal solution when the sink does not have a countertop for mounting a wall-mounted faucet
  • Comfort with the thermostatic version – you set the temperature once and every day you get the same water without "searching" for the right lever position

Disadvantages and risks of a built-in faucet

The most serious disadvantage is accessibility for repairs. If the cartridge starts to drip or the seal breaks, you have to open the wall – at least partially remove the tile to get to the mechanics. With a properly designed installation, the cartridge can be replaced through a front opening without breaking the wall, but this is not always the case – it depends on the construction of the specific model and whether the plumber made a service space. Another disadvantage is higher initial costs. A built-in faucet is more expensive in itself, plus the cost of the installation box (if not included in the package), the cost of the plumber and the cost of construction work – preparation of the cut in the wall, possibly modification of the piping. With a cheap wall-mounted faucet, we are talking about tens of euros, with a built-in installation including work, it easily reaches several hundred euros.

Special cases: bidet faucet and bathtub faucet

Not all faucets in the bathroom are just sink or shower faucets. A special category includes bidet faucets and bathtub faucets, where the question of wall-mounted vs. deck-mounted installation is addressed somewhat differently.

Bidet faucet

A bidet is a sanitary fixture to which the faucet is connected exclusively as a deck-mounted unit – mounted directly onto the body of the bidet into the opening on the top surface. A bidet does not have a wall into which a wall-mounted mechanism could be built. A bidet faucet usually has a shorter spout and an appropriate flow rate – it is not intended for filling large containers, but for hygienic washing.

Many bidet faucets also include a drain assembly – this is connected to the bidet drain using a rod and cable (or button). A bathtub faucet is interesting in that it exists in several mounting variants. The first variant is a deck-mounted installation on the edge of the tub – either directly through the openings in the tub surface (if the tub has them), or using a stand that is attached to the floor or wall. The second variant is a wall-mounted faucet – this is mounted directly on the wall next to the tub, usually at a height of about 80–100 cm. The third variant is a purely wall-mounted faucet with a spout or a spout integrated into the wall above the tub.

Practical scenarios from everyday practice

Theory is one thing, real customer orders are another. Here are several typical situations we encounter repeatedly:

Scenario 1: Reconstruction of a panel apartment without demolition

The customer has a 40-year-old panel apartment and is renovating the bathroom by themselves, without wanting to demolish the walls. The original plumbing comes out of the wall behind the sink at a height of 40 cm, with an axis distance of 150 mm. The right choice: a wall-mounted or countertop faucet, or a wall-mounted faucet if the customer wants to place the faucet on the wall. A built-in faucet would require demolition, moving the plumbing, and subsequent tiling – the costs would increase by 500–1,000 EUR for labor alone.

Scenario 2: A new bathroom in a private house, full reconstruction

The customer is building a bathroom from scratch, everything is accessible before tiling. The plumbing can go anywhere. The customer emphasizes a minimalist design, a wall-hung sink, and large-format tiles. In this case, a built-in faucet is the clear choice – the plumber embeds the box into the wall before tiling, and runs the plumbing exactly where it is needed. Result: a clean wall, no visible elements except for an elegant escutcheon and spout.

Scenario 3: A rented apartment, temporary replacement of a faulty faucet

The tenant has permission from the owner to replace a dripping faucet. They cannot demolish the wall and want a quick solution. The answer is clear: a countertop faucet, preferably the same type as the original one. The replacement takes one hour, and the investment is minimal. When moving out, the tenant can take the faucet with them or leave it in the apartment – according to the agreement.

Scenario 4: A built-in faucet started dripping after 8 years

The customer calls to say that the built-in faucet in the shower corner has started dripping. Assumption: a worn cartridge. If the plumber used a model with front access to the cartridge during the original installation, the replacement is relatively simple – the cover is unscrewed, the old cartridge is removed, and a new one is installed. However, if the box does not have front access or the tiling is applied over the service opening, the wall must be opened. Scenario 5: The customer wants to change a countertop faucet to a built-in one later

This is one of the most expensive situations. The wall is already tiled, and the plumbing is in the wrong place. To change a countertop faucet to a built-in one, it is necessary to: cut the tiles at the installation site, drill a cavity into the wall, move the plumbing to the correct height and position, install the box, test the tightness, and lay the tiles again. The cost of such a change starts at 400–600 EUR, excluding the price of the new faucet. Conclusion: if you plan to install a built-in faucet, make the decision before tiling!

What else influences the choice besides the type of installation

Choosing between a built-in and a countertop faucet is never purely technical – a number of other factors also play a role:

Surface finish and design

Built-in faucets visually fit into a modern, minimalist interior – and that is exactly where customers usually want also more "interesting" surface finishes. Black matte or satin are very popular in these solutions. A countertop faucet, on the other hand, can be a more expressive design element – if you have a retro or industrial style bathroom, a nice countertop faucet with a tubular spout can be the centerpiece of the whole space. Water hardness

In areas with hard water, limescale must be considered. A countertop faucet has a larger surface exposed to water and moisture – limescale is more visible on it, but also easier to clean. With a built-in faucet, the problem is inside – a narrowing of the flow due to limescale in the cartridge or spout becomes apparent later, but the service is more complicated.

Ergonomics and installation height

A countertop faucet is automatically at the height of the sink or countertop. A built-in faucet is installed at a predetermined height – and this must be thought through in advance. A faucet that is too low in the shower corner is impractical (you have to bend), and one that is too high looks unnatural. The recommended height of the axis of a built-in faucet for a shower corner is 100–120 cm from the floor, and for a bathtub 90–100 cm. The shower head is then at a height of 180–220 cm depending on the users' height.

More devices in one plumbing line

Modern bathrooms sometimes combine a bathtub and a shower in one space and want to control both from a single faucet. In such cases, a thermostatic wall-mounted faucet with a switching valve is an ideal solution — one thermostat sets the temperature, and a switch determines where the water goes (bathtub, shower, rain shower head). This kind of solution is almost impossible to implement with pedestal faucets without complicated surface plumbing.

Installation and common mistakes with both types

The most common mistakes when installing a pedestal faucet are: an under-tightened mounting nut (the faucet then tilts or rotates), missing gasket between the faucet body and the sink surface, too short or poorly sealed connecting hoses. The most common mistakes when installing a wall-mounted faucet are: inaccurate placement of the box (the faucet is then crooked or the cutout in the tile doesn't align), skipping the pressure test before covering the wall (water leaks are discovered only after tiling), and incorrect selection of the box depth relative to the wall thickness and tile. The tile thickness (usually 8–12 mm) must be added to the wall thickness and considered when choosing the box.

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I replace a pedestal faucet with a wall-mounted one without breaking the wall?

Generally not. A wall-mounted faucet requires embedding an installation box into the wall, which inevitably requires construction work — at minimum, drilling a cavity and possibly relocating the plumbing. An exception are wall-mounted faucets that are mounted on the surface of the wall, but these are not typical built-in installations.

Is a wall-mounted faucet suitable for a bidet?

No. A bidet faucet is always mounted directly on the body of the bidet, like a pedestal faucet. A bidet does not have a wall into which a wall-mounted body can be embedded. If you are looking for a bidet faucet, consider for example the chrome bidet faucet ARKO or its satin version.

What is the minimum wall thickness required for a wall-mounted faucet?
