What is duroplast and why it is considered the king of durability
Duroplast (also called Duroplast, Duroplaste, sometimes also as "cured resin" or "reaction plastic") is a thermosetting plastic – this means that during production it undergoes a chemical reaction, after which its molecular structure is irreversibly fixed. Unlike thermoplastics, it cannot be melted or reshaped again. Typical representatives of the duroplast group are phenol-formaldehyde resins (bakelite), polyester resins, epoxy resins and urea-formaldehyde resins.
For the production of toilet seats, duroplasts based on urea and formaldehyde (UF – urea-formaldehyde) or melamine and formaldehyde (MF – melamine-formaldehyde) are most commonly used. Both are cheaper than epoxy systems, but for the purpose of a toilet seat they have excellent parameters.
How a duroplast toilet seat is made
The process is hot and pressure pressing (compression moulding). The raw material – a powdered mixture of resin, fillers (mostly cellulose or glass fibers) and a catalyst – is poured into a mold, where it chemically hardens at temperatures of 140–180 °C and pressures of several dozen bars. The result is a homogeneous, monolithic body without internal cavities and without welded joints. The surface is smooth and glossy right out of the mold – it does not require a varnish coating.
Practical properties of a duroplast toilet seat
Duroplast is the material I encounter most often in environments where the seat is really put to the test. Hotels, guest houses, family homes with multiple children, office toilets – here duroplast shines. From regular use:
- Surface hardness: Duroplast has a Shore D hardness typically around 60–80. This means that scratches from common objects (keys, belt buckles) will not damage it. Thermoplastic seats are softer (Shore D 50–65) and scratch more easily.
- Resistance to cleaners: Duroplast withstands concentrated alkaline and acidic cleaning agents well. Bleach in normal concentration will not harm it even after years. This is one of the key advantages over MDF, which absolutely cannot tolerate water.
- Thermal resistance: Duroplast retains its shape and hardness even at 100–130 °C. This has no practical effect in a bathroom, but it shows the stability of the material.
- Weight: A duroplast seat is heavier than a thermoplastic one (a standard covered seat weighs 1.2–2.0 kg), but lighter than MDF (1.5–2.5 kg). The higher weight gives a solid and quality feel.
- Color: It is stable and does not peel, because the pigment is evenly dispersed throughout the entire volume of the material. Even with scratches, no other color of the "core" comes out.
- Lifespan: With normal handling and standard cleaning, realistically 8–15 years. I have seen duroplast toilet seats in working condition even after 20 years – just a little faded, but not cracked and functional.

Weak points of duroplast toilet seats
No material is perfect. Duroplast has two main weaknesses:
- Brittleness under impact: Because duroplast is hard and brittle (not elastic), it can crack when dropped on a hard floor or under strong mechanical impact. A thermoplastic would rather bend and return to its original shape under the same impact. So if you have small children who bang the panel against the bowl, there is a slightly higher risk of cracking.
- Higher formaldehyde emissions in poor quality production: Some cheap duroplast toilet seats from poor quality sources may release higher amounts of formaldehyde, which is a monitored parameter in EU standards. Certified products (EN ISO 14184) are safe.
Thermoplastic – lighter, cheaper, but not automatically worse
Thermoplastics are plastic materials that soften and can be reshaped when heated – repeatedly. For toilet seats, two types are mainly used: PP (polypropylene) and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). Less common is PC (polycarbonate), which is significantly more expensive.
PP (polypropylene) is the most widespread. It is cheap, light, relatively well resistant to chemicals and is produced in huge quantities. ABS is harder, easier to paint or chrome (which is why you see it in metallic toilet seat finishes), but it is more expensive.
How a thermoplastic toilet seat is made
The production process involves injection moulding: molten plastic is injected under pressure into a mold, where it solidifies. The cycle is faster than the compression of phenolic resins – taking seconds to minutes. Advantage: more complex shapes, lower cost. Disadvantage: the wall of the seat may have thinner areas, starting lines or internal cavities (hollow seat construction), which reduces strength.
Practical properties of a thermoplastic toilet seat
In practice, thermoplastics are used for two categories of toilet seats: the cheapest ones (PP, basic construction, price under 20 €) and premium design pieces (ABS with special surfaces, thicker walls, soft-close hinges). Performance parameters depend on wall thickness and processing quality.
- Weight: A PP seat typically weighs 0.6–1.1 kg, an ABS version 0.9–1.4 kg. The light weight is an advantage during installation, but it can feel cheap.
- Flexibility: Thermoplastics are more elastic, so they tend to flex rather than crack when impacted. However, they are more prone to deformation under prolonged load (so-called material creep), which in cheap PP seats leads to ovalization of the hinge or stand hole after years of use.
- Surface: Usually glossy, lacquered or just pigmented in the mass. If the surface is scratched, with PP the same color comes out (pigment in the mass). With lacquered ABS, the scratch may reveal a differently colored core.
- Chemical resistance: PP is very resistant to acids and alkaline substances. Bleach, toilet cleaners, vinegar water – none of these bother it. ABS is slightly less resistant, especially to strong solvents (acetone, toluene) – but this is not a problem with regular bathroom cleaners.
- Lifespan: A quality ABS seat lasts 5–10 years. A cheap PP seat lasts 2–5 years, after which it typically breaks at the hinge (hinge brackets) or cracks at the cover in the attachment area. - Recyclability: Thermoplastics are in principle recyclable (they can be remelted), which is an environmental plus compared to phenolic resins.
When thermoplastic is not enough
From practice: thermoplastic toilet seats most often fail in three scenarios. First – strong or very heavy users (over 120–130 kg), where the cheap hollow construction cracks at the hinge over time. Second – bathrooms with aggressive daily cleaning, where chemicals do not eat the surface, but mechanical scrubbing with dry cloths micro-scratches and dulls it. Third – households with children, where the seat is used as a "swing" or children spin on it. These are situations where phenolic resin or premium ABS with thick walls clearly wins.
MDF – a design material requiring care
MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) is a compressed wood fiber board with medium density. For toilet seats, MDF with a density of 700–850 kg/m³ is used, which is significantly denser than standard construction MDF board. The boards are milled into the shape of a seat and then lacquered (polyurethane lacquer in several layers, sanded between layers) or covered with a film.
MDF seats are a category for those who care about aesthetics. The thickness of the seat is greater and uniform around the entire perimeter, giving it a solid and luxurious look. Bathroom designers prefer them because they can be made in practically any color or texture (stone, wood, concrete, matte black, anthracite). - Surface: The lacquer provides an aesthetically excellent result and is resistant to common cleaning agents when undamaged. High-quality polyurethane lacquer also resists bleach and acids from toilet gels.
- Weight: An MDF seat is heavier – typically 1.5–2.8 kg. This weight gives it a feeling of solidity, but it is a result of the material density, not its robustness in terms of resistance to moisture.
- Thermal stability: Like duroplast, MDF is thermally stable. At 40–60 °C in the bathroom (which is extreme), there is no problem.
- The big Achilles’ heel – moisture: MDF is a hygroscopic material – if the lacquer cracks, scratches, or the seal around the hinge holes is compromised, water penetrates into the core. MDF swells, the swollen area pushes the lacquer away, and the seat is ruined. This is the most common reason for premature replacement of MDF toilet seats – not surface wear, but damage to the layers during installation or a fall.
- Cleaning: Proper cleaning of an MDF toilet seat means: a damp cloth and mild cleaning agents, no scrubbing with hard sponges, no soaking. What really determines lifespan: material vs. hinges and mechanics
This is an important point that is often avoided in marketing descriptions of toilet seats. The board itself (whether made of duroplastic, thermoplastic or MDF material) is in 60–70 % of cases the part that lasts the longest. What actually breaks, bends or wears out sooner are the hinges, suspensions and mounting system.
Cheap toilet seats have hinges made of PP (polypropylene) or thin zinc. Premium toilet seats are made of stainless steel, aluminum or reinforced technical plastics (PA6/nylon). A paradox of practice: a duroplastic board with laminated PP suspensions often fails at the suspension rather than the board itself. On the contrary, an average thermoplastic board with metal suspensions can be functional for 10 years.

Scenario 1: Family house, 4 people including children
Recommendation: duroplastic with metal hinges and soft-close mechanism. Children slam the lid, the frequency of use is high, and cleaning agents of various aggressiveness are used. Scenario 2: Rental – apartment in the city, tenant turnover
Recommendation: duroplastic or thicker ABS thermoplastic, white color. White color is the easiest to maintain and to identify dirt. Duroplastic withstands various cleaning methods that different tenants will use. Duroplastic also gives an impression of solidity, which is important for tenants.
Scenario 3: Design bathroom – the owner has no children and keeps order
Recommendation: MDF in a selected design. Here MDF makes sense. A careful owner who does not scrub the seat with a wire brush and does not slam the lid against the bowl will appreciate the aesthetics and unique design. Effect of temperature, UV radiation and chemicals – what time does to each material
A bathroom is not an aggressive environment in terms of extremes, but it is an environment with a combination of humidity, UV radiation (if it has a window), temperature fluctuations and chemicals. Let's look at how each material ages:
Duroplastic ages slowly and evenly. A typical sign of aging is a slight yellowing of white products – UV radiation breaks down surface molecules. This effect is slower than with thermoplastics, but irreversible. A product in a dark color will not visibly yellow at all.
Thermoplastic (PP) yellows faster than duroplastic, especially in white color. ABS has better UV stability than PP. Quality manufacturers add UV stabilizers, but cheap seats of unknown origin may visibly yellow after 3–4 years. MDF does not visibly age for a long time if the lacquer is intact. The problem comes with mechanical damage to the lacquer – first micro-cracks, then moisture penetration, then swelling. In practice, people do not do this – when the seat swells, they throw it away.
Identifying the material – how to find out what your seat is made of
Manufacturers do not always clearly state the material. A few practical tips on how to identify the material:
- Weight: Lift the seat and it is as light as an empty plastic container? It is almost certainly thermoplastic. Do you feel the weight? Duroplastic or MDF.
- Sound when tapping: Duroplastic produces a dull, full sound. Thermoplastic produces a hollow, higher sound (because it is hollow inside). MDF again produces a full sound, but with a slightly different timbre than duroplastic.
- Surface under light: MDF has a surface with a slightly visible lacquered structure (visible from the side). Duroplastic has a fine matte or glossy surface directly from the material. Thermoplastic is mostly uniformly glossy.
- Label or technical sheet: A proper manufacturer always states the material. If you cannot find it, it is a warning sign.
- Price: Roughly: PP thermoplastic under 20 €, ABS thermoplastic 20–60 €, duroplastic 30–90 €, MDF 50–150 € and more.
Most frequently asked questions – FAQ
Is duroplastic safe in terms of health? Does it release formaldehyde?
Certified duroplastic toilet seats meet European standards and limits for formaldehyde emissions. Products with certification (e.g. EN 13 310 for toilet seats) are safe for normal use. The problem may be only with non-branded, low-quality imports without certification. If you buy from reputable manufacturers (Schütte, Cersanit, VIGOUR, Geberit), there is no reason for concern. Can I use an MDF seat in a bathroom without a window with high humidity?
You can, but only if the lacquer is completely undamaged and you ventilate the bathroom after each shower (at least with an extractor fan). In a bathroom without a window and with weak ventilation, long-term humidity above 80 % is common – and that is not ideal for MDF. With the slightest mechanical damage to the lacquer, swelling is a matter of months. In such an environment, I recommend duroplastic or quality ABS thermoplastic with thick walls.
Why do some white seats yellow and others not – is it a dependence on the material?
Yes, partially. PP thermoplastic without UV stabilizers yellows faster (sometimes within 2–3 years under direct sunlight). Duroplastic yellows slower. ABS with UV stabilizers retains whiteness longer. It also depends on pigments and cleaning agents – some cleaning agents with an oxidizing effect (bleach in regular long-term contact) paradoxically accelerate yellowing of PP. Most standard toilet seats have a certified load capacity of 150 kg (static load according to EN 13 310). Premium models reach 200–225 kg. The material of the board affects the load capacity less than you might expect – the decisive factor is the design of the rib system (for thermoplastics) or the thickness and shape of the board (for duroplastics and MDF), and above all the strength of the hinges and their anchoring in the bowl. Yes, from a lifetime perspective. A cheap PP seat for 12–18 € will need to be replaced every 3–4 years. Over 15 years, that means 4–5 replacements, totaling 50–90 € plus the time spent on purchasing and installation. A solid duroplastic seat for 50–70 € with metal hangers will cover the same period without replacement. The economics are clear. Is it possible to sand or repaint a damaged MDF seat?
Technically yes, but in practice it rarely pays off. If the lacquer has only cracked on the surface (a shallow scratch without penetration into the core), a quality polyurethane marker or wood filler may temporarily cover the issue. If moisture has already penetrated and the MDF has swollen, the seat is irreversibly damaged and the only option is replacement. Practical advice: if you notice any peeling of the lacquer or swelling, address it immediately – every day moisture penetrates deeper.
