As a result, customers end up bringing home a beautiful seat that either protrudes over the edge of the bowl or, on the contrary, falls below the rim because the opening is too large. Both look bad, both are impractical, and both can be easily avoided by spending five minutes with a tape measure in your hand before purchase.

On the European market, there are basically two dominant shape groups – oval (elongated) and round (compact) bowls – and within each group, the dimensions vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Spanish Roca has different proportions than German Villeroy & Boch, Czech Jika differs from Polish Cersanit, and Italian manufacturers have their own traditions.
Moreover, the production of ceramic toilet bowls is not precise to the millimeter. Even the same model from the same manufacturer can have a deviation of 3–5 mm in different series, which with a rigid bracket seat can be enough to make the seat sit unevenly. Therefore, measuring your own bowl is always more accurate than relying on the catalog numbers from the toilet manufacturer.
Three key dimensions you need to know
When a customer comes for advice and says "I want a new seat", the first thing we do is ask for three basic numbers. Without them, no responsible person can give advice.
1. Bowl length (front-to-back dimension)
This is the most important dimension. It is measured from the front edge of the bowl (without the seat) to the center of the bracket attachment axis in the back part. Not to the back edge of the bowl, not to the wall – to the center of the bracket axis. It is precisely here that most people make a mistake: they measure to the back edge and get larger numbers than they actually are.
Common values on the European market:
- Compact (round) bowls: 360–390 mm
- Standard oval bowls: 420–470 mm
- Extended (elongated) bowls: 480–520 mm
Most seats sold on the Slovak and Czech markets are designed for a length of 440–470 mm – this is the real "European standard". Seats for 380 mm are intended for compact toilets, for example in small bathrooms or for children's toilets. The American market works with extended bowls around 470–480 mm, so be careful with seats brought from American warehouses or sold via global platforms.
2. Bowl width (crosswise dimension)
Measured at the widest part of the bowl – usually in the front third, where the bowl is widest. You measure the outer dimension of the ceramic, not the opening. Again, measuring the opening itself will mislead you, because openings have different shapes and toilet seat manufacturers do not design seats according to the inner opening, but according to the outer outline.
Common values:
- Narrow bowls: 310–330 mm
- Standard bowls: 340–380 mm
- Wider comfort bowls: 390–420 mm
The seat should cover the outer edge of the bowl (should not be narrower than the bowl) and at the same time should not protrude significantly (aesthetically unattractive and impractical – the seat easily catches). A tolerance of ±5 mm is generally acceptable.
3. Distance between hinge holes (bolt spacing)
This is the dimension that people most often forget to measure, and precisely this causes the seat to not sit symmetrically or it is even impossible to install. It is measured as the distance between the centers of the two holes in the back part of the bowl, into which the mounting caps or hinge bolts are inserted.
Common spacing values:
- Narrow spacing: 85–100 mm (older or compact bowls)
- Medium spacing: 115–120 mm (most common on the European market)
- Wide spacing: 130–155 mm (some Italian and Spanish models)
Most modern seats have a hinge with an adjustable axis in the range of 90–160 mm, which solves compatibility with most bowls. But not always – cheaper models have fixed axes and if the spacing does not match, there is nothing you can do. Therefore, always check the seat's specifications to see if it has an adjustable hinge and in what range.
How to correctly measure the toilet – step by step
Before you take the tape measure, check if there is still the original seat on the bowl. If yes, don't measure through the seat – that tells you nothing about the bowl itself. Always remove or move the seat aside. If the seat is missing (for example during renovation or after a broken hinge), it is an ideal situation for measurement.
Tools: what you will need
- Foldable tape measure or measuring tape (not string, which twists and measures inaccurately)
- Pen and paper or notes on your phone
- Optionally, a sliding caliper for precise measurement of hinge spacing
Step 1: Measure the bowl length
Place the tape measure on the front edge of the bowl (outer edge of the ceramic in the front part). Run it directly back to the center of the hinge hole axis. Do not end the measurement at the back edge of the ceramic – that would give you a larger number than actually corresponds to the seat. The correct point is the center of the hinge hole diameter. Record the value. Measure twice – sometimes bowls are not perfectly symmetrical.
Step 2: Measure the width of the bowl
Find the widest part of the bowl – this is usually in the front third to the middle. You are measuring the outer dimension of the ceramic. If the bowl has protrusions or an asymmetrical edge shape, measure at the point where the bowl is actually the widest. This number will tell you the minimum width the toilet seat needs to have.
Step 3: Measure the distance between the mounting hole centers
At the back of the bowl, locate the two holes through which the seat mounting screws pass. Measure the distance from the center of one hole to the center of the other. Over the years of practice, we have seen practically all imaginable situations. Here are the most common scenarios where customers came with the wrong seat and we had to find a solution:
Case 1: "I have an old panel house bowl, I don't know what fits on it"
Panel house toilets from the 1980s usually had bowls from manufacturers like Bohemia Keramika or Seltmann Weiden. These bowls are shorter – around 390–410 mm – with a hinge spacing of only 90–100 mm. Most modern seats have an adjustable hinge starting at least from 90 mm, so they fit, but you need to check whether the seat has a shorter version or an adjustable hinge. Solution: always measure, because these bowls can be tricky.
Case 2: "I bought a new bowl, I was supposed to pick the seat later"
This is surprisingly common. A customer buys a wall-hung bowl – for example, Cersanit Senator or Jika Lyra – and wants to buy the seat separately. Problem: wall-hung bowls from different manufacturers can have different dimensions even within the same price category. Senator has a different length than Lyra. Solution: always bring the technical specifications of the bowl or measure it directly in the store before leaving.

Visual assessment in the store or by photo is reliable only in distinguishing round from oval. Nothing more. Two oval seats next to each other may look identical, but can differ by 25 mm in length. A customer buys a seat with an adjustable hinge, but during installation, finds out that the hinge caps are too thick for the holes in the bowl. Some older bowls have holes only 6 mm in diameter, while modern hinges have 8 mm caps. Seat manufacturers usually provide the following dimensions: overall seat dimensions (L × W), hinge adjustment range, and sometimes also recommended bowl dimensions. Note – "seat dimensions" are not the same as bowl dimensions. A seat is usually 10–20 mm shorter than the bowl it is intended for, as it does not cover the entire length of the bowl, only its functional part.
Practical example: if your toilet has a bowl with a length of 450 mm (measured from the front edge to the center of the hinge axis), you are looking for a seat suitable for bowls of 440–460 mm. The seat itself may have listed dimensions of 445 × 365 mm – these are its physical dimensions, not the dimensions of the bowl.
Adjustable vs. fixed hinge
If you are unsure about the hinge hole spacing or your bowl is non-standard, choose a seat with an adjustable hinge. Most of the better quality seats today solve this problem with a sliding hinge axis or multiple attachment positions. Rimless toilets have become very popular in recent years – they do not have an internal rim, which makes cleaning easier. From the seat's perspective, this means the bowl has a different shape at the back for seating. The seat is not supported by the internal rim, but only by the outer edge of the ceramic. Most modern seats are compatible with rimless bowls, but always check whether the seat manufacturer states this compatibility.
D-shaped bowls
D-shaped bowls appear mainly in design toilets and some suspended bowls. The front part of the bowl is flat (forming the letter D). For such a bowl, you need a seat specifically designed for the D-shape. A standard oval seat will look visually inconsistent and will partially protrude or fall short on the sides. Manufacturers label these seats as "D-shape" or "square front."

Bidet seats (with a cleaning function) are more complex in terms of dimensions – they contain electronics and a water tank, making them heavier and taller. - Cersanit: Usually standard European dimensions, length 440–460 mm, bracket spacing 115–120 mm. Models Senator, Crea, and Arteco are very similar to each other.
- Jika: Some models have a slightly larger bracket spacing (up to 130 mm). Models Lyra, Mio and Pure are popular and available, but always verify the spacing.
- Roca: Spanish production, some models have a wider spacing up to 140 mm. Gap and Debba are common models, but measure before purchasing the seat.
- Geberit / Keramag: German quality, very consistent dimensions, but some premium series have proprietary design elements.
- Villeroy & Boch: A premium category, the seat is usually purchased directly from the manufacturer or a compatible seat. Bracket spacing is usually 90–100 mm for older models.

If you have measured the basin and found that it belongs to some "intermediate category" or has a non-standard bracket spacing, it does not mean that you cannot find a seat. Options are:
- Seat with adjustable bracket in a wide range: A common standard for higher quality seats today. Range 80–160 mm covers the vast majority of basins.

A new wall-hung or standing basin will have standard dimensions and the choice of seats will be much greater.
Toilet seat and WC basin – mutual tolerance
Customers often ask us: "If the seat is 5 mm longer, does it matter?" The answer depends on which 5 mm it is and where. General rules:
- Length +5 mm: Usually not problematic – the seat will slightly protrude forward, but the function and aesthetics are minimally affected.
- Length −10 mm and more: Problematic – the seat does not rest on the front edge of the basin, the forward overhang is not supported. Sitting is unstable.
- Width +5 mm: Visually noticeable, but functionally acceptable. More than 10 mm protruding on one side is aesthetically inappropriate.
- Width −10 mm: The seat is visibly narrower than the basin – not suitable.
- Bracket spacing: Tolerance is zero for fixed brackets. If you have an adjustable bracket, adjust the bracket precisely.
Common questions (FAQ)
Is there one seat that fits all toilets?
No. Although many manufacturers claim that their seat is "universal," in practice this is true only for most standard European basins in the range of about 440–470 mm length and 340–375 mm width. For compact basins under 410 mm and for non-standard Italian or Spanish basins with wider bracket spacing, you need to look for a specific model.
Can I use a seat from another manufacturer than my basin?
Yes, and it is a common practice. Basin and seat manufacturers are usually different companies (with the exception of premium brands). Dimensions are important, not the brand. Schütte, Alvine, Wenko and other seat manufacturers produce seats for basins of all common manufacturers – you just need to know the dimensions.
How can I find out the dimensions of the basin if I don't have the original documentation or technical sheet?
Measure directly. A tape measure and five minutes are all you need. If there is a manufacturer's label on the basin (sometimes it is under the seat or on the back of the cistern), try to find the technical sheet online according to the model. Most manufacturers have catalogs available on their websites.
What if my dimensions are exactly on the border of two seat categories?
Focus on the bracket spacing – this is an indispensable dimension. For length and width, you can experiment with a tolerance of ±5 mm, but in terms of safety and functionality, it is always better to choose a seat whose compatible basin range covers your dimension rather than just reaching the border.
I have a wall-hung basin – do the same measurement rules apply to it?
Yes, the measurement rules are the same. With a wall-hung basin, only the way of accessing the bracket holes changes – in wall-hung basins, the holes are usually accessible from the front-bottom, not from the side. Measuring the length from the front edge to the center of the bracket axis remains the same. Wall-hung basins are usually shorter (360–440 mm), which should be considered when choosing.
Is it worth buying a seat with a soft-close mechanism if I don't know if it fits?
The soft-close mechanism does not change the dimensional requirements – a seat with soft-close has the same dimensions as a standard seat of the same series.
