- If the problem is in the quick-release catch, check the condition of the plastic latches. If they are worn, the entire hinge set (usually sold separately) must be replaced.
- Never tighten too much – the hinge material or pin can break.
- Use thread locker (Loctite blue, medium strength) – prevents self-loosening without preventing you from loosening the screw later.

Broken brackets and catch mechanisms
As well as the hinges themselves, there are other structural parts that break: plastic caps (hinge covers), catch latches in the quick-release system, pins on which the lid rotates, and fixing distance rods.

One of the most annoying faults: the seat appears to be properly attached, the hinges are solid, but with every sit-down the seat rotates a few degrees to the side. Repair makes sense when:
- Hinges are loose, but the seat is otherwise in good condition – it is enough to tighten or replace the hinge set.
- The soft-close damper has stopped working, but the seat is high quality (duroplastic) and otherwise undamaged – sometimes a drop of oil is enough.
- A broken socket is only an aesthetic problem – replacement for a few euros.

Replacement is more reasonable when:
- The seat is cracked – for hygienic and safety reasons.
- The MDF seat has swollen – repair is not possible.
- The seat is older than 5–7 years and is made of cheap thermoplastic – repair only prolongs the agony.
- The price of spare parts approaches the price of a new seat – this is often the case with no-name seats.
- The seat is yellowed and hygienically problematic – yellow thermoplastic is degraded and chemically unstable.

Prevention of faults – what prolongs the lifespan of a toilet seat
An experienced technician will always say: the best repair is the one you don’t have to do. A few simple habits can extend the lifespan of the seat by years:
- Do not use chlorine for daily cleaning. Chlorine-based products are suitable for occasional disinfection (once a week), not for daily use. For regular cleaning, warm water with soap or a pH-neutral cleaner is sufficient.
- Do not sit on the edge of the seat. The greatest pressure occurs when sitting on the front edge. This is where the moment is concentrated, which strains the material and the hinge attachment. Always sit with your back towards the cistern.

- Do not use abrasive cleaning agents (powders, wire sponges). Scratches on the surface create areas for bacteria to settle and accelerate material degradation.

Warranty conditions and claims – what constitutes a valid fault
Toilet seats sold in the EU are subject to a legal warranty period of 24 months (from the date of purchase). In practice, this means that if the seat cracks within two years of normal use, you have a right to a claim. “Normal use” is a key term – if the seat cracks due to a fall, children jumping on it, or the use of an inappropriate cleaner, the manufacturer will rightly refuse the claim.
What is usually considered a warranty issue:
- Cracking of the seat within the first year without an obvious cause (material defect).

My seat has a small crack near the hinge hole. Is it enough to glue it or should it be replaced?
Gluing is not a long-term solution – a crack near the hinge hole is a mechanically stressed area and will continue to widen with each sit. Moreover, the crack is a hygiene issue, as bacteria can get into it and cannot be removed by regular cleaning. I recommend replacement as soon as possible. The hinges keep loosening, even though I tighten them regularly. What am I doing wrong?
It is likely that the screw joint lacks locking. Use Loctite 243 (blue, medium strength) or another screw locker – apply a small drop to the screw thread before tightening. An alternative is self-locking nuts (nylon nuts with a locking ring). Also check whether the plastic washers under the hinge block are in good condition – if they are missing or deformed, the hinges will not have enough friction against the bowl.
The toilet lid has stopped closing slowly – the soft-close function has stopped working. Can it be repaired without replacement?

However, this is a temporary effect and the treatment is relatively labor-intensive. In the case of thermoplastic that has yellowed due to UV exposure and chemicals, the material degradation is deep and the yellowing will return within a few months. The seat moves sideways even after tightening the hinges. What is the cause?
