Detailed information

Product detailed description

Vaillant aroTHERM VWL Split plus 35/8.2 230V is the outdoor unit of the air-to-water heat pump SPLIT system from the aroTHERM Split plus product range. It is the smallest performance level in this series, primarily intended for smaller family homes, apartments, and renovated buildings with lower heat loss, where the outdoor unit needs to be discreetly installed with minimal noise.

SPLIT system versus monoblock – what is the difference

Unlike monoblock heat pumps, where the entire refrigeration and hydraulic circuit (including the water-refrigerant heat exchanger) is located directly in the outdoor unit and only heated water is led into the house, the SPLIT system aroTHERM Split plus operates differently. The outdoor unit VWL 35/8.2 contains the compressor, evaporator, and fan – that is, the refrigeration circuit, which operates with refrigerant R32. This refrigerant is piped (not heated water) to a separate indoor hydraulic unit (e.g., the VWL ...IS series), which is located inside the building – in a technical room, boiler room, or other suitable space.

The advantage of this solution is that freezing of water in the pipes outside the house is not a risk (the refrigerant circuit does not freeze), the outdoor unit is more compact and quieter, and the indoor unit can also carry a hot water storage tank or an electric auxiliary heating element. The disadvantage is more complex installation – the refrigerant circuit between the outdoor and indoor units (copper piping) must always be professionally soldered, evacuated, and charged with refrigerant, which can only be performed by a person with a valid refrigeration certification (F-gas certification). This is exactly where the SPLIT system differs from the monoblock, where it is sufficient to connect the outdoor and indoor units with standard heating piping, and the installation can be handled by a heating technician without refrigeration qualifications.

This outdoor unit VWL 35/8.2 AS 230V is therefore specifically designed to work in conjunction with an indoor hydraulic unit from the aroTHERM Split plus series (VWL .../6 IS series or compatible module), and is not intended for standalone operation or combination with monoblock indoor units of other series.

Technical specifications of the outdoor unit VWL 35/8.2 AS 230V

The stated values are based on the official technical data from the manufacturer Vaillant for the aroTHERM Split plus series and may slightly vary according to the specific product revision and national certification – for binding values in the project, we recommend referring to the current technical data sheet and project documentation from Vaillant.

Why choose the Split plus series

aroTHERM Split plus is designed as a flexible solution where the investor requires a maximally quiet outdoor unit (for example, in dense urban areas, near neighboring properties, or in garages), and at the same time wants to use the indoor unit for hot water preparation via an integrated storage tank or connection to an external storage tank. Thanks to the fact that the refrigerant circuit is separated from the heating water, the risk of freezing of the piping between the units during power outages in freezing weather is also eliminated – which is one of the common risks with improperly dimensioned monoblock solutions in extreme cold.

The model 35/8.2 is the smallest performance level in the series (alongside variants 55/8.2 and 75/8.2), suitable mainly for well-insulated new builds and low-energy homes with a heat loss of approximately 3.5–5 kW at the design outdoor temperature, or as an auxiliary source in a bivalent system.

Installation and assembly

The outdoor unit is installed on a solid foundation or wall/ground consoles with sufficient clearance from obstacles (air intake and exhaust), to prevent recirculation of cooled air and ice formation. Between the outdoor and indoor units, refrigerant piping (copper lines with thermal insulation) is run, which must be:

  • soldered in a protective nitrogen atmosphere,
  • pressure tested and evacuated to the specified level,
  • charged with refrigerant R32 according to the length of the route (refrigerant added according to the manufacturer's tables),
  • electrically connected to the indoor unit (control and power cabling).

This part of the installation can only be performed by a company or technician with a valid certification for work with F-gases (refrigerants) and a Vaillant certificate, as it involves work on a pressurized refrigeration circuit. The connection of the heating system (radiators, underfloor heating, DHW storage tank) is implemented on the indoor unit side in the usual way, just like with other Vaillant heat pumps.

Before ordering, we recommend verifying compatibility with a specific aroTHERM Split plus indoor unit (the performance level should match the outdoor unit) and having the building's heat loss calculated to ensure that the 3.5 kW capacity is sufficient for the house.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I connect this outdoor unit to a monoblock indoor module?
No. The SPLIT outdoor unit operates with a refrigerant circuit and must be paired exclusively with an indoor hydraulic unit from the aroTHERM Split plus series, which contains a refrigerant-water heat exchanger. Monoblock indoor units (e.g., from the aroTHERM plus monoblock series) are not compatible.

Who can install the refrigerant piping?
Only a person or company with a valid certificate for work with fluorinated greenhouse gases (refrigeration certification), in accordance with Vaillant's installation instructions. Without this qualification, it is not legally possible to put the system into operation.

What refrigerant does the unit use and is it safe?
The unit uses refrigerant R32, which has a lower global warming potential (GWP 675) compared to the older R410A. It is slightly flammable (class A2L), so installation and topping up must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Is this unit suitable for cooling in summer?
Yes, in combination with a suitable indoor unit and distribution (e.g., floor heating/cooling or fancoils), the Split plus series can also provide passive or active cooling of the building.

How far can the outdoor unit be from the indoor unit?
The maximum length of the refrigerant piping is 40 m, with a maximum height difference of 30 m (outdoor unit higher) or 10 m (outdoor unit lower) – specific limits and the need for additional refrigerant charge are governed by the manufacturer's project documentation.

What is the noise level of the unit at night?
In the quiet night mode (reduction of fan speed to 60 %), the unit achieves a sound power level of approximately 47.6 dB(A), making it one of the quietest units in its performance class on the market.

Do I need a hot water tank for this unit as well?
It depends on the selected indoor unit – some variants of the Split plus range have a built-in tank, while others require an external hot water tank. We recommend consulting with a designer or installation company.
