A pressurised expansion vessel compensates for the volume changes of water caused by heating in a closed heating or water system. The vessel is divided by a flexible EPDM rubber membrane into an air section and a water section – as the water pressure rises, the membrane is pushed into the air space, protecting the system from overpressure without unnecessary water loss.
The range includes versions with a volume from 2 to 50 litres, a working pressure of 8 or 10 bar and a connection of 3/4" or 1". Smaller vessels are mounted by hanging directly on the pipework, while larger volumes (from 50 l upwards) are available in a vertical version with a stand or in a horizontal version for installation in confined spaces. Vessels for heating and vessels for water/domestic systems differ in the certification of the membrane for contact with drinking water, so they are not interchangeable.

- How do I choose the right size of expansion vessel? The size depends on the total volume of water in the system, the operating temperature, the opening overpressure of the safety valve and the hydrostatic pressure – for a typical family house a vessel up to 30 litres is usually sufficient, but an exact calculation should be made for the specific system.
- What is the difference between an expansion vessel for heating and for domestic water? A vessel for water/domestic systems has a membrane with hygienic certification for contact with drinking water, whereas a heating vessel does not have this certification – so they should not be substituted for one another.
- Can an expansion vessel be installed with the valve facing down? Yes, the orientation of the vessel does not affect the way it is mounted; what matters is that it is connected into a closed circuit with sufficient pre-charge pressure.
- How often should the pre-charge pressure in an expansion vessel be checked? It is recommended to check the pre-charge pressure once a year during the boiler service, or whenever the system pressure drops, as a drop in the expansion vessel is the most common cause.
