When a customer comes into the store and says they want "a good toilet that flushes well," most people imagine a strong water jet and clean ceramic. Few, however, know that behind this simple request lies a rather fundamental technical difference – and that difference is called Tornado Flush. This flushing system has changed the way modern toilets work and is gradually pushing the traditional gravity flush off the market. Despite this, many households still install toilets with traditional flushing systems – and not always for good reasons. In this article, we will go through both systems from the ground up, compare them in real operating conditions, and help you decide which one actually makes sense for your specific case.

How the traditional gravity flush works – the physics behind the toilet

The traditional flush, which we know from the vast majority of older toilets, works on a simple principle of gravity and water column pressure. Water is held in a tank (cistern) mounted either directly on the bowl or – in the case of wall-hung toilets – built into the wall behind the front panel. When you press the button, a valve in the tank opens and water flows down into the bowl by gravity through a so-called rim groove or a system of holes placed around the edge of the bowl.

This rim – in English terminology called the "rim" – is a key component of the traditional system. Water runs down the inner surface of the bowl and carries the contents down to the siphon by gravity. The flow is essentially one-way and relatively weak on the side surfaces – the water simply does not cover the entire inner surface evenly. The result? Dirt accumulates on the sides of the bowl, limescale forms, and over time characteristic rings of dirt appear, which are particularly difficult to clean.

The traditional flush also has one structural disadvantage: the area under the rim of the bowl is practically inaccessible for regular cleaning. A toilet brush simply cannot reach there. This hidden area is therefore an ideal place for bacteria to multiply, limescale to form, and organic residues to settle. From a hygiene perspective, this is a serious problem, which health authorities in several European countries have also highlighted.

How Tornado Flush works – the principle of rotational flushing

Tornado Flush (or Cyclone Flush in some brand names – the principle is the same) is a system that instead of water running down through rim holes uses controlled tangential nozzles placed in the body of the bowl. These are two or three flushing nozzles strategically oriented so that water enters the bowl at an angle and creates a rotational – cyclonic – movement across the entire inner surface of the bowl.

This rotational effect has several key consequences. The water evenly "wraps" around the entire inner surface of the bowl – from the top edge down to the siphon. Centrifugal force pushes the water into crevices and areas that a traditional gravity flow would never reach. The cleaning effect is significantly more intense and at the same time uses less water. Modern toilets with Tornado Flush typically flush 4–4.5 liters on a full flush, whereas older traditional toilets required 6–9 liters to achieve a comparable result.

The second key feature is the absence of a traditional rim (rimless design). Since water does not enter through channels under the rim, this rim is simply not needed – and therefore not produced. The bowl is open, without hidden spaces, which dramatically simplifies cleaning and reduces hygiene risks. This is why rimless toilets with Tornado Flush are now required in many hospitals, care homes, and retirement homes.

Rimless bowl vs. rimless bowl with Tornado Flush – is it the same thing?

Here, you need to be cautious, as there are now three distinct constructions on the market that are often confused:

  • Classic bowl with a rim (rim): traditional flushing through channels under the rim, the oldest construction.
  • Rimless bowl without special nozzles: a bowl without a traditional rim, but with a flushing system that also uses gravity – only openly, through one or two openings without a hidden channel. Cleaning is easier, but the swirling effect is weaker.
  • Rimless bowl with Tornado Flush: a full tangential system with nozzles, swirling flow, and maximum surface coverage. This combines two innovations at once.

In practice, this means that not every "rimless" bowl is automatically a Tornado Flush. When choosing, always check the product's technical specifications. Cleaning and hygiene in the long-term – what determines satisfaction

When I talk to customers who are renovating their bathroom after 15 years, it almost always turns out that one of the main pain points was precisely cleaning the WC bowl. The area under the rim of a classic bowl is a hidden nightmare – it is not visible, cannot be cleaned, and yet most of the unpleasant odors and hygiene load come from there. Standard sponges simply cannot reach there, chemical products are hard to get there, and limescale from hard water accumulates there year after year.

With Tornado Flush rimless bowls, the situation is fundamentally different. Water saving: how much do you actually save in a year?

The argument for water saving with Tornado Flush is real and can be fairly accurately calculated. Let's consider a typical four-person family, where the WC is flushed on average 20 times a day (a combination of full and water-saving flushes):

  • Old 9L/4.5L system: assuming a 50/50 ratio of full and water-saving flushes, the average consumption is ~6.75 L/flush × 20 = 135 liters per day = 49,275 liters per year.
  • New classic 6L/3L system: average consumption ~4.5 L/flush × 20 = 90 liters per day = 32,850 liters per year.
  • Tornado Flush 4L/2.5L system: average consumption ~3.25 L/flush × 20 = 65 liters per day = 23,725 liters per year.

The difference between the old 9L system and Tornado Flush is therefore approximately 25,550 liters per year – that is 25.5 m³ of water. At an average price of sewage and water at 3–4 €/m³ (depending on the region), this represents a saving of 75–100 € per year for just one WC. Noise of the flush – does it matter?

Noise is a topic customers ask about mainly when the WC is adjacent to a bedroom or living room. The answer is more nuanced than it might seem. Tornado Flush itself is not automatically quieter than a classic flush – the noise level depends primarily on the cistern, piping, and the construction of the wall-mounted support. It would be dishonest to claim that Tornado Flush is always and for everyone the right choice. There are situations where a classic flush makes sense:

  • Renovation on a limited budget: If the renovation costs of the bathroom are at the limit and the price difference between a classic and a Tornado Flush bowl (typically 20–60 €) would significantly affect the overall budget, a classic bowl is not a bad choice – especially if it is a less frequently used WC (guest room, possibly a second WC).
  • Low water hardness in the area: In areas with soft water (under 10°dH), the problem of limescale buildup is much smaller. Hygiene remains an argument, but the practical impact of hard water is negligible here.
  • Restoration of a historic interior: In specific cases (e.g., a heritage restoration), the choice of bowls may be limited by stylistic requirements and the design of a classic bowl may be more appropriate.
  • Replacement of one bowl from an older set: If you are replacing only the bowl without changing the wall-mounted support and other elements and want to maintain the visual consistency of the series, the choice may be limited by the available models in that series.

In all other cases – new builds, full renovations, frequently used WC in a family home or apartment – Tornado Flush or at least a rimless system is recommended without reservations.

Selecting a specific model: what to focus on when purchasing

When choosing a bowl with Tornado Flush or a classic flushing system, I recommend considering the following factors:

  • Dimensions of the bowl: Standard wall-mounted bowls have a width of 355–370 mm and a length of 480–560 mm. Before ordering, always check how much space you have in front of the wall-mounted support – minimum free depth of 700 mm, ideally 750 mm.   • Type of flush: Clearly distinguish from the name or technical specifications – look for "Tornado Flush", "Rimless" (ideally both), or "bez okraja" ("without edge") in the Slovak description.
  • Shape of the bowl: An extended (console) shape is more comfortable, while a compact shape saves space. Practical experiences from installation and operation

From real customer cases, some practical observations emerge that are rarely mentioned in technical specifications. One customer ordered a Tornado Flush bowl for a bathroom in a new build with hard water (Bratislava area, hardness around 22°dH). After a year of use, she reported that the bowl remained significantly cleaner than the previous classic bowl in her old apartment, despite the same hard water. She cleans it once a week with a sponge and no brush – the hidden edge simply doesn't exist, so there's no need to mechanically clean inaccessible areas.

Tornado Flush and bidet – does it make sense to combine them?

If you are considering not only a toilet bowl but also a bidet or an integrated bidet (toilet with a flushing function), the bowl flushing system plays a secondary role – the primary hygiene effect is ensured by the flushing function itself. Is Tornado Flush the same as a rimless toilet bowl?

Not necessarily. Rimless refers to a bowl design without a traditional rim (ledge), over which water flows. Tornado Flush is a specific flushing system with tangential nozzles that create a rotating flow. Most Tornado Flush bowls are also rimless, but not every rimless bowl has Tornado Flush – it may have a simpler gravity-based flush without a hidden rim. Always read the product specification sheet.

Does Tornado Flush require higher water pressure at home?

No. The Tornado Flush system operates at normal household water pressure in the range of 1.5–6 bar, which is standard for most Slovakian plumbing systems. Special pressure regulators or pumps are not required. The principle of rotation is based on the geometry of the nozzles and the angle of water entry, not on unusually high pressure.

Can a Tornado Flush bowl be cleaned with regular products, or are the nozzles sensitive?

Regular bathroom cleaning products are fine. The nozzles are ceramic or glazed – the same material as the rest of the bowl – and are not metallic or plastic, so they do not corrode and are not sensitive to acids in common limescale removers. Only aggressive abrasive products or wire scrubbers are not recommended, and this applies to both systems. In such cases, a classic bowl or a simple rimless bowl without Tornado Flush is an economically justified choice. A classic model may also offer a wider selection of simple, affordable models in these spaces.

Conclusion: which system really flushes better?

The answer is not surprising, but it is clear: Tornado Flush flushes better, more hygienically and more economically than a classic gravity-based flush. The rotating flow covers up to 95–100% of the bowl's inner surface, uses less water, does not create inaccessible "hidden" areas under the rim and significantly reduces cleaning and water costs in the long run. The combination of a rimless design and Tornado Flush represents today's highest standard of regular toilet bowls available without the need for a luxury budget.

The classic flush remains a relevant option only in specific limited scenarios – low usage frequency, very limited budget or special design requirements. For a family bathroom, apartment or any frequently used space, a Tornado Flush rimless bowl is an investment that pays off – in terms of cleaning comfort, water savings and hygiene satisfaction every day.
