Types of installation frames: what to choose and why the base is important
There are two main types of installation frames on the market:
- Frames anchored to the floor and wall – this is the most common type. Two anchor points are in the floor (frame legs) and the frame also rests against the wall or is attached to it. This system is the most static and stable and we recommend it as the first choice.
- Frames anchored only to the wall – they are used where the floor is not suitable for drilling (e.g. floor heating, thick waterproofing, or special constructions). They require the wall to be load-bearing – brick, concrete, aerated concrete with sufficient strength.
A critical question to ask before purchasing a frame: what is the load-bearing wall? A drywall partition without a load-bearing core is not suitable for anchoring an installation frame – without appropriately dimensioned steel substructure, the frame would move and the bowl could crack. If you do not have a load-bearing base, it is necessary to create a steel structure from profiles (UW/CW), which will transfer the load to the floor.
The standard load capacity of an installation frame for a wall-hung toilet should be at least 400 kg – which is a large reserve for normal use. Quality frames offer a load capacity of 400–500 kg, some premium types even 600 kg. This number refers to the entire system properly anchored into the load-bearing base.
Tools and materials you will need
Before starting the installation, prepare the following:
- Demolition hammer or SDS drill (for anchoring into concrete/brick)
- Drills for concrete and metal (diameter according to the frame anchors – usually 10–12 mm)
- Water level (at least 60 cm long, ideally 100 cm)

Step-by-step installation procedure
Step 1: Alignment and marking the position
Before you take the drill in your hand, spend enough time on precise alignment. It depends on it not only the final appearance, but also the functionality and long-term stability of the entire system.
The waste pipe from the floor must be in the axis of the wall-hung bowl. For a standard Geberit or TECE frame, the center of the waste opening of the frame is typically at a height of 220 mm from the rough floor (before tiling). The final height of the seat surface of the bowl from the finished floor should be 400–420 mm – this is the ergonomically recommended range for an adult of average height. Some frames allow height adjustment in the range of 82–98 cm (total frame height), which provides room for individual needs.
Mark the axis of the toilet bowl on the wall (vertical line), the position of the waste pipe and the height of the lower edge of the frame. Check with a water level whether the floor is level – any height differences are compensated by adjustable frame legs.
Step 2: Anchoring the frame to the floor and wall
After marking the location, you can temporarily place the frame in its position and check if everything fits. Then remove the frame and drill holes for the anchors. For anchoring into a concrete floor, use chemical anchors or expansion anchors with a minimum diameter of M10 – never use plastic anchors in concrete for load-bearing anchoring. The same applies to brick.
Adjust the frame legs to the desired height and secure them according to the instructions. The frame must be perpendicular to the wall (check with a spirit level), and both vertically and horizontally aligned. This phase is crucial – if the frame is crooked, the entire assembly will look unprofessional and the tank may not adhere evenly to the wall.
After anchoring the frame to the floor, attach it to the wall. Most frames have an anchoring point on the back side, which you can fix either into a load-bearing wall (expansion anchor) or using an attached cantilever anchoring bracket. Tighten the nut to check that the frame does not move even under significant force.
Step 3: Connecting the waste pipe
The waste hose or rigid pipe from the frame must be connected to a vertical waste pipe with a minimum slope of 2% (i.e., a 2 cm height difference for every meter of length). Most frames are equipped with a flexible reducer, which allows for minor axis corrections. It is important to ensure the seal at the joint – either a rubber gasket inserted into the neck or, in the case of an eccentric reducer, make sure the joint is not dry even in bends.
Common mistake: the waste hose is too long and forms an S-shaped curve with a reverse slope – water remains in it, odors rise up, and in winter there is a risk of freezing (especially in toilets in an external wall). Always route the waste pipe along the shortest possible path with an even slope.
Step 4: Connecting water to the cistern
The built-in cistern (tank) is supplied with cold water via a supply hose with a shut-off valve. The valve must be easily accessible even after covering the wall construction – it is usually placed in a maintenance opening or behind the flush button.
Use Teflon tape (3–4 layers) or the supplied gasket for the water supply connection – never tighten a thread without sealing. Turn on the water supply, check the seal on the valve stem, and set the maximum water level according to the instructions (usually at least 10 mm below the overflow). After filling the cistern, check all connections for dryness for at least 30 minutes before closing the construction.
Step 5: Gypsum board or masonry wall construction
After mounting the frame, connecting the waste pipe and water supply, and after a hydrostatic test (let the cistern be full for at least 24 hours), you can close the wall space. Most commonly, gypsum board (impregnated, green type for wet areas) is used, less often masonry from bricks or aerated concrete.
The gypsum board is attached to the steel substructure of the frame and to the CW/UW profiles. In the area where the flush button will be, there must be an opening exactly according to the button dimensions – the frame manufacturer specifies the exact cut-out size. An opening for the maintenance valve of the water supply must also not be missing.
After installation, most installers make a mistake and immediately tile the wall – the gypsum board must first be primed and allowed to harden. Fill the joints between the gypsum boards with gypsum-based filler and tape, smooth the surface, and let it dry. Only then can you apply a waterproofing primer or directly tile the wall.
Step 6: Tiling and preparation for installing the tank
Two threaded rods (usually M12) protrude from the frame, to which the tank is suspended. These rods must protrude from the tiling (after tiling) by exactly the amount specified in the instructions – usually 55–70 mm before the final tiling surface. If the rods are too short, the tank will not press against the tiling. If they are too long, the nuts will not cover the caps and the construction will look unprofessional.
The waste neck of the frame also protrudes from the tiling – check its position and centering before tiling. Typically, it is a round neck with a diameter of 90 or 110 mm. Some tanks have a sloped connection, others a horizontal one – always check compatibility with the frame’s waste neck.
Step 7: Installing the WC tank
Before installing the tank, place a rubber gasket on the frame’s waste neck (usually included with the tank or frame). The gasket must sit evenly and must not be twisted. A dry joint without a gasket will eventually smell.
Carefully place the tank onto the threaded rods and insert the tank’s waste neck into the frame’s neck. Check that the tank evenly adheres to the tiling along the entire perimeter. If the gap on one side is larger than 2–3 mm, the cause is either a crooked tiling or incorrect frame anchoring – this must be addressed. Never seal a large gap with only silicone – silicone is not a load-bearing element and such a solution will not last long.
Place plastic washers and nuts on the threaded rods and tighten them manually. Then alternately tighten them with a wrench – first the left one to 3–4 Nm, then the right one to the same torque, and so on alternately until the final value (usually 6–10 Nm according to the manufacturer). Never tighten an entire side at once – there is a risk of cracking the ceramic. Finally, place decorative caps on the threaded rods.
Seal the joint between the tank and the wall with sanitary silicone – not with grout, not with polyurethane sealant. Silicone remains flexible, is resistant to moisture, and can be removed if the tank needs to be disassembled. Grout would break off after the first dynamic load on the tank.
Step 8: Installation of the flush button and first use
The flush button is inserted into the pre-prepared guide pins in the frame through the opening in the cladding. Most modern buttons are dual-action (small and large flush – 3 and 6 liters, or 4.5 and 9 liters according to the older standard). The water volume setting is adjusted on the mechanism inside the tank before the cladding is closed – after closing, it can only be done through the inspection opening.
After installing the button, open the water supply, let the tank fill, and perform the first flush. Check whether water is dripping from the water supply connection, from the tank overflow, or from the waste trap of the bowl. After the first flush, lie down on the floor and shine a flashlight into the frame – if you see any damp traces anywhere, seal the joint before covering the structure.
Choosing a specific WC bowl: what affects the installation

Mistake 1: Insufficient frame anchoring
This is by far the most common problem we encounter in complaints. A frame anchored into drywall without a load-bearing structure, expansion anchors into an empty brick, or drilling too short into concrete – all of this leads to the frame moving after a few years. Prevention is simple: when anchoring into concrete, drill at least 70–80 mm into the material (not just the surface), use certified chemical anchors or expansion anchors of the correct class, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the frame.
Mistake 2: Kinked waste pipe and trap
In real customer practice, we regularly encounter the situation where the pre-wall is installed before it is clear where the waste will go. The installer improvises and the waste hose creates a crooked path with lifts – water remains in the trap, odors rise, and in extreme cases, clogging occurs. A proper waste pipe must have a constant slope towards the vertical waste column – 2% is the minimum, 3% is comfortable.
Mistake 3: Under-tightened or over-tightened connecting nuts

Ceramic is brittle, and it is said that even one quick extra turn of the wrench is enough. Therefore, it is worth investing in a torque wrench and tightening according to the values in the manual. Mistake 4: Poor seating of the waste trap gasket
A rubber gasket that is not evenly seated in the trap will cause odors on the first wetting and, with a higher water flow, even a leak. Always moisten the gasket with soapy water (not oily lubricant – that degrades the rubber), seat it evenly, and insert the bowl smoothly and directly – do not twist or drop it.
Mistake 5: Tiling without inspection openings
Sometimes someone covers the pre-wall structure with tiles without any inspection opening for the water supply. Aerated concrete has sufficient weight and strength to anchor the installation frame, but standard expansion anchors behave differently in it than in concrete – in a porous material, there is a risk of splitting. Drywall partitions by themselves cannot support the load of a wall-mounted toilet. The internal parts of the cistern (rubber seals, fill valve) should be replaced on average every 8–12 years – depending on the quality of the water (hard water accelerates wear) and the intensity of use. Therefore, it is important that access via the inspection opening or via the flush button is always functional.

A load-bearing wall is ideal, but not necessary.
