These dimensions apply to the free space in the room – they are not the dimensions of the bowl itself.
In practice, the situation is more complicated. The minimum normative value is indeed just a minimum, and for people with limited mobility, completely different, much larger requirements apply (usually a width of at least 1500 mm for barrier-free WC). For a standard apartment WC, a realistic and comfortable solution is a room with minimum dimensions of 1000 × 1400 mm, where there is enough space for comfortable sitting, opening the door, and movement.
It also depends on the direction of the door opening. If the door opens inward, you need to account for the fact that the door must not hit the bowl or the seat. If it opens outward, this condition no longer applies, and you can manage with a smaller space. Sliding doors are an ideal solution for small spaces in this regard.

In practice, however, it is recommended to individualize the height. For taller people (over 180 cm), a more comfortable height of the top edge of the bowl is 430–450 mm. For families with small children, the elderly or people with mobility limitations, on the other hand, a lower installation is recommended, around 380–390 mm, or a support bar can be installed. For barrier-free toilets, special standards apply – the bowl must usually be installed at a height of 460–480 mm including the seat, so the user can stand up more easily.
The installation height is set on the mounting frame before the wall system is built in. After the wall is built and tiled, it cannot be changed without demolition work – this choice is therefore irreversible and should be considered in advance.

Does the WC bowl depend on the position of the waste pipe? Not directly – the ceramic bowl is connected to the waste via a wall frame. However, the position of the existing waste pipe (or a planned new one) significantly influences which frame you can use and how far from the wall you can install it.
The standard distance of the waste pipe axis from the wall is 180 mm (for a sloping downward outlet) or it can be a horizontal outlet at various heights. Wall frames are designed to accommodate these dimensions, but it is important to check the technical specifications of the frame before buying the bowl. The bowl itself is connected to the frame via a standardized flange gasket and is usually not bound to a specific position of the waste pipe – this is handled by the frame.
Bowls with front or rear waste outlet – how it affects dimensions
Suspended WC bowls use a standardized connection system via a wall frame – so from the customer’s point of view, it is not necessary to consider whether the bowl has a front or rear waste outlet (in suspended bowls, the connection is practically always horizontal on the back, leading directly into the wall system). This is a simplification compared to pedestal WC bowls, where the position of the waste outlet significantly complicates the choice.
More important in this context is the choice of the correct installation frame, which must be compatible with the given bowl. Manufacturers usually list which frames the bowl has been tested with and are recommended. Some bowls are exclusively intended for frames from the same manufacturer, while others work with standard frames from various brands. Always verify this before ordering – otherwise you risk complicated installation or the need for an additional sealing gasket.
Practical scenarios from practice: which toilet bowl fits into which space
Scenario 1: Bathroom connected with WC in an apartment, area approx. 5–6 m²
This is the most common case in panel buildings after reconstruction. The room is usually 1600–1800 mm long and 1400–1600 mm wide. The wall system takes up 200–220 mm, and a bowl with a length of 490–520 mm is fine. I recommend a bowl with a length of around 490–510 mm, as most of the space is occupied by the sink, shower cubicle or bath. A width of up to 365 mm is ideal.
Scenario 2: Separate WC without a bathroom, dimensions 900 × 1200 mm
Every millimeter counts here. Wall system 200 mm + bowl 490 mm = 690 mm from the wall. The remaining space for movement: 510 mm, which is tight, but functional. In terms of width: 900 mm minus bowl width 340 mm = 560 mm on both sides in total (280 mm on each side). This is borderline, but manageable. In this case, I clearly recommend a shorter and narrower bowl – Feret 490×340×365 is the ideal choice here.
Scenario 3: Large bathroom 4 × 3 m, planned bidet next to WC
Space is not an issue here, so you can go for longer bowls for comfort. Agat 520×365×360 is a suitable choice. If you plan to install a bidet next to the WC, reserve at least 400 mm width for each unit (including a gap of approx. 200–250 mm between them). The total width for WC + gap + bidet is usually 900–1100 mm.
Scenario 4: Bathroom renovation in an old house – old standing WC is changed to a wall-hung one
The most common problem here is the position of the waste pipe. Old standing toilets usually had a vertical waste outlet directly into the floor. The transition to a wall-hung toilet requires a wall frame and modification of the waste pipe to a horizontal outlet or the use of a special frame with an angled transition.
