Despite this, most people do not think about whether they are cleaning correctly – they simply reach for the first available cleaning product and scrub. The result? How is a ceramic bowl made and what constitutes its surface

Sanitary ceramic – known in the industry as vitreous china or sanitary porcelain ceramic – is produced by pressing or casting ceramic material into molds and then firing it at temperatures typically between 1 150 and 1 250 °C. After firing, a solid, non-porous material is created. However, the key role is played by the glaze: a thin glass layer usually 0.5 to 1.5 mm thick, which is applied before firing and fuses into a continuous, smooth, impermeable surface during the firing process.

This glaze is responsible for:

  • impermeability of the surface (the ceramic underneath is slightly porous)
  • gloss and aesthetics
  • hygienic properties – a smooth surface without pores prevents the settling of bacteria
  • resistance to common chemicals

The glaze is therefore glass – and like glass, it has its weaknesses. It is relatively hard (Mohs hardness around 6–7), meaning it is not scratched by a fingernail or ordinary ceramic tile. However, it is scratched by steel wool, abrasive powder, wire brushes, or even rough cleaning sponges with a stiff side. As soon as microscratches appear in the glaze, they become catching sites for limescale, rust, and bacteria – and the bowl becomes much harder to clean.

Most common types of dirt and what causes them

Before reaching for a specific product, it is important to understand what type of dirt you are dealing with. Each type requires a different approach, and correct diagnosis will save you unnecessary scrubbing, which only tires the surface.

Limescale (calcium and magnesium deposits)

In Slovakia, most water is moderately to highly hard – total hardness values range between 1.5 and 4 mmol/l, with many areas (Záhorie, Podunajská nížina) reaching values above 3 mmol/l. Water that evaporates or runs off the ceramic leaves mineral deposits. On the WC bowl, a white to yellowish-white coating is typical under the edge of the flushing zone and on the inner walls of the bowl. Limescale is alkaline in nature (pH above 7), so it is neutralized by acids.

Rust and leaching stains

Brown-orange or reddish stains arise from two sources: either they are iron in the water (very common in well water, with Fe levels above 0.2 mg/l already leaving visible traces), or they are a combination of limescale with organic substances. Rust is chemically more resistant than pure limescale and usually requires oxalic acid or a combination of citric acid with surfactants.

Biological coatings and dark stains

Dark, greenish or black coatings are mostly biofilm – colonies of bacteria and mold. They typically occur under the edge of the bowl (in classic bowls with a rim flushing channel) or in areas with standing water. The most effective way to eliminate them is with disinfectants based on active chlorine or peroxyacetic acid.

Organic deposits and staining

Yellow to brown staining in the lower part of the bowl is of organic origin. It arises from gradual accumulation and the bond to the glaze is weaker – it responds well to products with enzymatic or oxidizing active ingredients. The problem arises when the organic deposit is hidden under a layer of limescale – in that case, you must first remove the mineral layer, then the organic matter.

What Damages Ceramic Glaze – and What You Must Avoid at All Costs

From my experience during reconstructions and replacements of sanitary ceramics, I know that the biggest enemy of a ceramic bowl is not time or hard water – it is improper cleaning habits. A surface that could last for decades can be devalued in two to three years by aggressive cleaning.

Mechanical Damage

  • Wire scrubbers and steel wool: The hardness of steel is around 4–5 on the Mohs scale, which is less than glaze – but the edges of the wires are sharp and under pressure, they leave microscopic scratches. In addition, steel leaves behind metal particles that oxidize and look like rust stains.
  • Hard abrasive powders: Cleaning agents containing silicate or lime abrasives are suitable for cast iron, not glazed ceramics. Their use is like sanding glass with coarse sandpaper.
  • Hard side of a sponge (green scouring sponge): Although it is commonly sold for household use, it contains abrasive fibers that dull the glaze with repeated use.
  • High-pressure scraping with tools: Sometimes people reach for scrapers or even flat screwdrivers for tough deposits. The result is always the same – visible scratches in the glaze.

Chemical Damage

  • Concentrated hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid): Technical hydrochloric acid (HCl, concentration 30–37 %) is effective for limescale, but when in prolonged contact, it also attacks the glaze itself and causes its dulling and microcorrosion. In households, it appears under the name "hydrochloric acid" and its use in sanitary fixtures is unsuitable.
  • Mixing acids and chlorine: If you use bleach or Savo after an acidic cleaning agent, a chemical reaction occurs, producing hydrogen chloride – a toxic gas. In addition to health risks, this combination also aggressively affects the glaze.
  • Long-term exposure to strong alkalis: Concentrated hydroxides (NaOH) are not common in toilet cleaning products, but for example, in the removal of industrial wastewater or with inappropriate waste removal products, they can damage the glaze after long contact.
  • Acetone and solvents: Glaze is chemically resistant, but silicone seals and plastic components near the bowl are not. If these substances get on the plastic seat or seals, they cause cracking and degradation.

Correct Tools and Accessories for Cleaning a Toilet Bowl

A simple rule: everything you use to clean a toilet bowl must be softer than the glaze. In practice, this means:

  • Soft synthetic bristle toilet brush: The standard for daily maintenance. Bristles made of polyethylene or polypropylene are hard enough to mechanically remove dirt but do not scratch the glaze. Choose a model with dense bristles – sparse bristles have a lower cleaning effect and bend instead of cleaning when pressure is applied.
  • Soft sponge or microfiber cloth: For the outer surface of the bowl, its edges and lower part. Microfiber is also excellent for polishing after cleaning.
  • Plastic or silicone scraper: If you really need to mechanically remove a tough deposit, use only a plastic scraper – never metal. A plastic scraper has a hardness of around 2–3 on the Mohs scale, significantly lower than glaze.
  • Spray bottle / atomizer: For applying a solution of citric acid or other liquid agents to vertical surfaces, where the solution would otherwise run off before it could act.
  • Rubber gloves: Not only for hygiene reasons – citric acid can dry and irritate the skin after prolonged contact.

Weekly Cleaning Procedure

For most households, it holds true that if you clean the toilet bowl once a week in the correct way, you should never find yourself in a situation where you have to fight with hardened deposits or intense staining. Preventive maintenance is always easier than corrective action.

Step 1 – Apply cleaning gel under the rim of the bowl: Start by applying toilet gel or a cleaning solution under the rim of the bowl, where biofilm and limescale usually settle. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes – this is the most important step that most people skip.

Step 2 – Cleaning the inside of the bowl with a brush: Use gentle circular motions to clean the entire interior of the bowl. Do not forget the transition to the trap and the lower rounded part of the bowl. Do not apply excessive pressure – the chemical should do the work, not the strength of your hands.

Step 3 – Flushing: Flush and check the result. If there are still stains, reapply and extend the contact time to 15–20 minutes before cleaning with the brush again.

Step 4 – Outer surface: With a soft cloth soaked in slightly diluted cleaning agent (or regular bathroom cleaner), clean the outer surface of the bowl, the top of the seat, the side surfaces, and the mounting points. On suspended bowls, do not forget the bottom of the bowl – since the bowl is suspended, the bottom is freely accessible, but it is precisely here that dust and moisture can settle, potentially causing mold on silicone seals.

Step 5 – Rinsing and drying: Rinse the outer surface with clean water and dry it with a microfiber cloth. Drying is especially important in areas with hard water – if you let the water evaporate, it leaves behind white limescale stains.

Deep cleaning for stubborn deposits

If you have inherited an apartment from previous tenants or have neglected maintenance for a longer period, the situation requires a more thorough approach. In practice, I have encountered bowls where the lime scale was 3–5 mm thick, colored orange-brown, and regular toilet gel was ineffective even after hours of action.

Acid cleaning for heavy lime scale

Pour a solution of citric acid (100–150 g per liter of water, warm water dissolves better) into the bowl and let it work for 1–3 hours. For truly heavy deposits, the process may need to be repeated multiple times. Citric acid is safe for glaze at normal concentrations and for exposure times up to 4 hours. An alternative is 9 % vinegar (acetic acid), but citric acid is more effective and has no strong odor.

Commercial toilet gels labeled as "for lime scale" usually contain diluted hydrochloric acid (1–5 %), citric acid, or a combination of these with surfactants. These concentrations are safe for glaze as long as the instructions on the label are followed and the product is not left to act longer than recommended. Never use technical grade hydrochloric acid or products without REACH registration.

Iron stains and rust

If citric acid is not enough for rust, reach for products containing oxalic acid (also known as ethanedioic acid). It forms soluble complexes with iron and is much more effective on iron deposits than citric acid. It is available in ceramic cleaning products for sanitary ware (e.g., products in the "anti-rust" range). The exposure time is usually 20–40 minutes, then scrub and flush.

Biological film under the rim of a classic bowl

A classic bowl with a rim or edge channel has a hidden channel along the edge where water runs off during flushing. This area is dark, moist, and poorly ventilated – ideal conditions for biofilm. Applying cleaning agent there with a regular brush is difficult. Solutions include:

  • A special curved toilet brush with thin, curved bristles specifically designed for cleaning under the rim
  • Using a toilet gel in a squeeze bottle with a narrow nozzle – inject it directly under the rim
  • Using toilet tablets in the cistern with disinfecting and anti-lime components – they help preventively with every flush

Although most toilet bowls are white, the market also offers dark shades, including matte black or anthracite ceramic. On dark ceramics, white-gray lime scale stains are much more noticeable than on white. The cleaning procedure is essentially the same – citric acid for lime scale – but you must pay more attention to thorough drying after cleaning to prevent new stains. On matte ceramics, the situation is more challenging: a matte surface is generally more prone to dirt accumulation than a glossy one, as the surface is microstructurally rougher. Maintenance of a suspended toilet bowl – specifics of installation and accessibility

Pay attention to this area during cleaning – gently wipe with a damp cloth and make sure the silicone seal between the bowl and the wall is intact and clean. Rotten or cracked silicone seal must be replaced – not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for hygiene. Along with cleaning itself, there are measures that can significantly reduce the frequency of the need for deep cleaning and extend the life of the glaze surface.

Ceramic impregnants and nano-protection

There are impregnants available on the market for sanitary ceramics based on nano-silica or fluoropolymers. These products create an ultra-thin hydrophobic layer on the glaze, which makes water and dirt easier to wipe off and prevents them from settling. Application is simple: apply to a clean, dry surface, leave for 10–15 minutes, and wipe off the excess. The effect typically lasts 3–6 months, after which the application should be repeated. These products are compatible with glaze and their use is safe.

Water softening

If you live in an area with hard water and lime scale is a recurring problem, consider installing a water softener or a magnetic water conditioner on the supply line. Reducing water hardness from 3 to 1.5 mmol/l significantly reduces the formation of deposits by more than half.

WC tablets in the cistern

Tablets with anti-lime and disinfecting components, which are placed in the cistern or hung on the edge of the bowl, help maintain microbiological cleanliness and slow down the formation of lime scale. They are not a substitute for regular cleaning, but they complement routine maintenance well. Note – some tablets contain dyes that, with long-term use, can discolor rubber components of the cistern (seals and membranes), shortening their lifespan. Choose tablets without aggressive dyes.

Ventilation of the bathroom

This may seem obvious, but in practice, insufficient ventilation is one of the main causes of intense mold and biofilm growth around the toilet bowl. Keep the humidity in the bathroom below 60 % – at higher humidity, biofilm spreads quickly even with regular cleaning. A functional ventilation grid and regular ventilation are essential.

Cleaning after renovation or for a new basin

A new ceramic basin straight from the factory has perfectly clean glaze without any dirt. Despite this, I recommend the first cleaning before putting it into operation – production processes and transport can leave dust, silicone residues or packaging materials. A gentle cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient.

After a renovation, where grinding or cutting was done in the bathroom, the situation is different. Construction dust (mainly from plaster, concrete, tiles) is strongly alkaline and abrasive. If it gets onto the new basin, it should be removed as soon as possible with a damp cloth without scrubbing – dry construction dust smeared on ceramic can leave fine scratches. Never remove hard deposits of construction material mechanically without prior wetting.

When is the basin really "damaged" and when is it just "neglected"

From practice I know that customers sometimes come with a basin that looks terrible, but after proper deep cleaning it looks almost new. And sometimes the opposite – the basin looks "white" at first glance, but has a network of micro-scratches across its surface, where every dirt accumulates and no cleaning helps in the long run. How to distinguish these two cases?

  • Neglected basin: Dirt and discoloration are on the surface of the glaze. After proper acidic cleaning and disinfection, it improves significantly or is completely cleaned. The surface feels smooth to the touch.
  • Damaged basin: The glaze is mechanically damaged – micro-scratches are visible as a dullness or silhouettes of scratches under side lighting. The surface feels rougher to the touch. Even after cleaning, dirt returns quickly. Such a basin cannot be improved by cleaning – the surface is physically damaged and the only long-term solution is replacement.

  • Cleaning with a scouring pad without cleaning agent: Mechanical scrubbing without chemicals is less effective and unnecessarily burdens the glaze.
  • Too short contact time of the product: Most people apply gel and immediately start scrubbing with a pad. Let the product act for at least 5 minutes.
  • Ignoring the outer surface: The inside of the basin is cleaned, but the outside is neglected – yet it is precisely there that finger prints, dust and deposits of cleaning agents from the surroundings accumulate.
  • Mixing products: Acidic products and chlorine should never be used at the same time or shortly after each other.
  • Using abrasives for "hard stains": When gel is not enough, some reach for abrasive powder. The right choice is to extend the contact time of the acidic product, not to increase mechanical force.
  • Neglecting the seat and the seat suspension: The area under the seat suspension is one of the dirtiest places on the WC – and it is easily accessible after removing the seat.

Can I use vinegar directly from the bottle to clean the WC basin?

Yes, 9 % kitchen vinegar (acetic acid) is safe for glaze and effective for light to moderate limescale. Pour it directly into the basin or soak paper towels and place them on the dirty areas for 30–60 minutes. The disadvantage is the strong smell. For stronger deposits, citric acid solution at 100–150 g/l is more effective – it is almost odorless and has a higher capacity for neutralizing lime.

How long can I let an acidic cleaning product act on ceramic?

Commercial WC gels with low acid concentration (1–5 %) can be left to act for 20–30 minutes without problems according to the instructions. A solution of citric acid at 10–15 % concentration is safe even after 2–3 hours of contact. Never leave technical hydrochloric acid or any products outside the recommended time on the label to act – the risk of damaging the glaze and plastic components increases with time and concentration.

Why does limescale form so quickly on a new basin?

The speed of limescale formation depends mainly on the hardness of the water in your area, not on the quality of the basin. In areas with hard water (over 2.5 mmol/l), the formation of deposits is significantly faster. The solution is either a water softener, regular application of nano-impregnation on ceramic, or increased cleaning frequency with citric acid.

Is it normal for a black coating to form under the edge of a classic basin?

Yes, it is a common problem with classic basins with a rim-type flushing channel. The hidden channel behind the edge is dark, moist and poorly ventilated – ideal conditions for biofilm from bacteria and mold. The solution is regular cleaning with a special bent brush and applying disinfecting gel directly under the edge. Can I use a steam cleaner on a WC basin?

I generally do not recommend using a steam cleaner on sanitary ceramic. Although steam itself does not damage ceramic, sudden temperature shock (especially on cold ceramic) can cause micro-cracks in the glaze after repeated use, especially if the basin is old or has existing micro-defects. In addition, steam does not remove limescale – for that, a chemical reaction with acid is needed. A steam cleaner can be useful for disinfecting tile grout around the basin, but not for the ceramic itself.

How can I tell if the surface of the basin is really damaged or just dirty?

A simple test: after thorough cleaning and drying, run your finger over the inner surface of the basin. An undamaged glaze is absolutely smooth, almost glassy to the touch. If you feel a slight roughness or see a network of dull lines under side lighting, the glaze is mechanically damaged. Another indicator: dirt returns very quickly – within 2–3 days after cleaning, the inside is already discolored again, even though water scale and biological contamination is not normally so fast with your water. Damaged glaze cannot be restored by any cleaning agent – the basin must be replaced.
