This question comes up very often. The answer is mathematically simple. A quality washbasin or shower tap costs from 80 to 400 euros depending on the series and manufacturer. A replacement shower head or sensor usually costs between 8 and 40 euros. Even if you pay a plumber for an hour of work, you will still be well below the price of a new tap.

The second argument is ecological – it makes no sense to throw away a functional brass body of a tap just because of a worn plastic nozzle or a burnt-out electronic board. Higher series taps are also designed precisely to be serviceable. Manufacturers supply spare parts for several years after the production of a particular series has ended.

The third, practical argument: replacing a sensor or a shower head takes less time than the trip to the tap store. You don't need to change the pipe connections, tiles, or reseal the silicone. The tap remains in place, and you only replace the non-functional component.

How do I find out exactly which spare part I need?

This is the most common question and also the one where customers most often make mistakes. The process has several steps that will save you a lot of frustration.

1. Identify the brand and series of the tap

On most taps, there is a production label either directly on the body of the valve or on the original packaging. Look for markings such as "Turin", "Matera", "MZ-Expo", "Classic", "FREE", etc. If the label is missing, a photo of the tap from several angles will help – an experienced seller can identify the series based on the shape of the body, handle, and outlet position.

2. Determine which component is damaged

We distinguish several basic groups of spare parts for bathroom taps:

  • Shower head (handheld shower) – the most common replacement, usually the nozzles wear out, the plastic cover cracks or the hose breaks at the connection
  • Ceramic cartridge – regulates temperature and flow, after wear the tap drips or only cold/hot water flows
  • Infrared sensor – for touchless taps, most often it has stopped responding or responds unreliably
  • Solenoid valve – an electromechanical component of touchless taps, opens and closes the water flow
  • Outlet aerator / filter – clogged with limescale, the thread may break off
  • Shower hose – the braiding cracks or the ends are damaged

3. Find out the dimensions and type of thread

For shower heads and hoses, the internal diameter and type of thread are crucial. The most commonly used is G 1/2" (so-called 1/2 inch thread, outer diameter approx. 20.9 mm) – and this is the size used by the vast majority of European manufacturers. There are, however, exceptions in some Spanish and Italian series, where you may encounter M22×1. Compatibility: Is the replacement part universal or must it be original?

This is the topic where customers make the most mistakes. There are three categories of replacement parts in terms of compatibility:

Original (OEM) parts

Manufactured directly by the battery manufacturer, intended for a specific series. Compatibility guarantee is 100%. Disadvantage: sometimes harder availability and higher price. Series parts (cross-compatible)

Some manufacturers use identical components in different series. For example, a shower head from one series may physically fit into another if they have the same thread and the same type of bracket mount. Universal replacement parts

Hoses, aerators, seals and some shower heads are sold as universal. Standard dimensions apply to them (G 1/2"), but the hose length, head diameter and type of bracket mount must be verified. Aerators are standardized according to the outlet nozzle diameter (M22, M24, M28).

Questions about shower heads – what customers deal with most often

Why is my new shower head leaking at the connection with the hose?

Most common cause: missing or shifted rubber seal (O-ring or flat gasket) inside the nut. During installation, people pull the gasket out with the protective foil or it simply falls out. Solution: check whether the gasket is in place, or replace it with a new one (they are sold in sets of several pieces for a few cents). Can I install a larger shower head than the original one?

Theoretically yes, but with limitations. A larger head diameter means a higher flow rate – if your water heater or flow heater cannot heat the larger volume of water, you will get a cooler shower. In addition, in some series of batteries, the shower bracket is dimensioned for a specific diameter. The hose is long enough, but the shower head does not reach the desired location – what to do?

If the issue is the hose length, you can replace it with a longer one without having to change the shower head. Hoses are available in lengths from 1.2 m to 2.0 m, with 1.5 m being the most common. Note: with a longer hose, there is a greater amount of standing water in the hose after the shower – this water cools down and when you use the shower again, cold water will run out before the warm one. This is especially relevant in households with longer piping from the water heater.

Questions about infrared sensors – touchless batteries

Touchless batteries are technically more sophisticated, and therefore more questions arise in case of malfunctions. Electronics have a long lifespan, but infrared sensors are sensitive to dirt, limescale on the cover plate and changes in power supply.

How do I know that the problem is really in the sensor and not somewhere else?

Typical signs of sensor failure: the battery does not react to hand proximity, even though the power supply is working (the indicator light is on), or on the contrary, water is flowing constantly even when hands are not in range. Sometimes the sensor reacts only from one side or at a very short distance.

Before ordering a sensor, check:

  • Battery condition (in battery-powered models) – the sensor is the first component to stop working when the power is low
  • Cleanliness of the sensor cover plate – limescale significantly reduces the range
  • Sensitivity setting (if the battery has adjustable sensitivity – some series allow it via jumpers on the board)
  • Presence of interfering sources – strong direct daylight on the sensor can cause incorrect reactions

Is sensor replacement difficult? Do I need an electrician?

No. Touchless batteries operate with a power supply of 6V DC (four AA batteries) or 9V DC (external adapter). It is not the mains voltage of 230V, so the replacement is not subject to electrical regulations and can be done by any handy DIYer. Can I replace the sensor between the FREE and Classic series?

No – and that is important to know. Although the principle of operation is the same, the physical format of the sensor board, the connector and the calibration are different. A sensor for FREE cannot be connected to Classic and vice versa. You must always order a part specifically for your series. Ordering questions – how to avoid wrong orders

How do I identify the faucet model if I don't have the original packaging?

The most reliable method: take a photo of the faucet from the front, from the side (profile), and the outlet detail. Many models have a characteristic handle or outlet shape. Next step: look for a label or sticker on the bottom of the faucet body or on the inside of the faucet cover (for touchless models). What to do if I ordered the wrong part?

It is always better to contact the seller before installation. If you have not yet installed the part and it is in its original condition, return or exchange is trouble-free. After installation, the situation becomes more complicated – so the first rule is: before installation, check whether the part fits physically, and only then remove the protective film and gasket to install "for real".

How long does the delivery of a replacement part take?

We usually ship parts in stock within 24 hours of ordering. Standard courier delivery time is 1–2 working days. For special parts that are not available in stock, the delivery time may be 5–14 days – this is always stated on the product page. If you need the part urgently, it is worth checking availability before ordering.

Technical questions – cartridges, seals, valves

How do I know whether to replace the cartridge or just the seals?

A ceramic cartridge wears out from the inside – the ceramic plates that regulate the flow begin to jam or break. Signs of a faulty cartridge: the handle moves with difficulty, the faucet drips when closed, and the water does not respond smoothly to turning. A faulty seal is expressed differently – it drips in a visible place (e.g. under the handle, near the outlet), but the operation remains smooth. Seals are cheaper, so try replacing them first.

Can I use Teflon tape when installing replacement parts?

Yes, for tapered threads (BSPT – G 1/2" tapered), Teflon tape is the correct solution. For straight threads (BSPP), rubber seals or flat washers are used, not Teflon. Most connections on shower heads and hoses are straight – the seal is a flat rubber O-ring or washer inside the nut. If you put Teflon where a flat seal is needed, the connection will leak.

How often should replacement parts be changed?

  • Ceramic cartridge: 10–15 years with normal use, shorter in areas with hard water

Customers who have never disassembled a faucet before are sometimes surprised: what kind of electronics does a touchless faucet contain? It is actually much simpler than you might expect. The basic components are:

  • IR module (transmitter + receiver) – a compact board with a sensor, usually hidden behind a window in the faucet body
  • Control board (controller) – processes the signal from the sensor and controls the solenoid
  • Solenoid valve – an electromagnetic valve that physically opens and closes the water flow
  • Power supply – four AA batteries (6V DC) or a 9V DC power adapter

Do touch faucets have different replacement parts than touchless ones?

Yes. Touch faucets (so-called capacitive touch sensors) have different electronics – instead of an IR module, there is a capacitive board. The solenoid valve is of the same type. Can I change a touchless faucet to a manual one by replacing components?

No – the faucet body and hydraulic part are designed for a specific type of control. Touchless faucets do not have a classic cartridge with a handle, the flow is controlled by a solenoid. It cannot be converted without a major structural change.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How long will a replacement shower head last?

It depends on the quality of the material and water hardness. Plastic heads of the cheaper grade last 3–5 years, ABS with metal parts 5–10 years. Original replacement parts, such as the replacement shower head for the Turin TRN11102 faucet, are made from the same material as the original part and have a comparable lifespan. You can extend the lifespan by regularly descaling the nozzle – it is enough to immerse the head in a water and vinegar solution for 30 minutes once a month.

Water flows from the faucet even when hands are not near the sensor – is it a sensor or valve malfunction?

If the water keeps flowing and does not react to covering the sensor, it is almost always a malfunction of the solenoid valve – the valve does not close because it is mechanically stuck (limescale) or the valve coil is burned out. If the water flows only occasionally and unpredictably, it may be the sensor reacting to light or movement interference in the surroundings. First, try to clean the sensor window. If the problem persists, test by replacing the sensor. If that also does not help, it is the valve.

Can I attach a hose and handheld shower to a sink faucet?

Only if the faucet has a G 1/2" external thread on the outlet and is dimensioned for a higher flow rate. Standard sink faucets (so-called single-lever wall-mounted) are not designed for shower flow – they have a smaller cartridge diameter and lower nominal flow rate. Shower faucets (bath/shower) are specifically built for higher flow and usually have a standard outlet for a handheld shower. If you are unsure, consult before ordering.

Where can I find the model number of my faucet?

Most commonly on: (1) a sticker glued onto the body of the faucet – look under and behind the faucet, (2) an engraving or laser marking on the bottom of the body or on the overflow cover, (3) the original packaging or warranty card, (4) the invoice from the seller. Is the installation of replacement parts complicated – do I need special tools?

It depends on the type of part. Shower head: no tools needed, just hands (the nut is tightened by hand). Hose: the same. IR sensor: screwdriver (usually PH2), possibly pliers for the plastic safety clip of the housing. Cartridge: cartridge key (sold for a few euros) or flat screwdriver.
