It allows for mechanical connection of two parts by turning – in the case of bathroom taps, it is most often the connection of the hose to the shower head or the connection of the supply hose to the body of the tap. It depends on two basic quantities: the thread diameter and the thread pitch (the distance between two threads).

In plumbing and water supply installations, the following types of threads are mainly used:

  • G (BSP – British Standard Pipe) – the most widespread type in European plumbing. It is a cylindrical thread with designations such as G 1/2", G 3/4", G 1". The number after G indicates the nominal diameter in inches, but note – this number is not the actual outer diameter of the thread. G 1/2" has an actual outer diameter of approximately 20.9 mm.
  • M (metric thread) – designations such as M22×1. The number after M is the actual outer diameter in millimeters, the number after the slash is the thread pitch in mm. The metric thread M22×1 is typical for shower hoses and connectors.
  • NPT (National Pipe Thread) – an American conical thread, rare in European plumbing, but sometimes appears in imported products.

For the average customer, it is important to know that G 1/2" (BSP) and M22×1 are two completely different threads, although their outer diameters are very similar (20.9 mm vs. 22 mm). These two types cannot be screwed together – neither the groove pattern nor the pitch is compatible. This difference causes a huge number of complaints when the customer "by force" puts one type on the other and the result is a deformed thread or a leak.

Head diameter: what exactly to measure and how

When we talk about the "head diameter" in the context of replacement shower heads and bathroom taps, we usually mean two different things: the outer diameter of the shower head body (the overall diameter of the head body, e.g. 80 mm or 120 mm) and the diameter of the connecting thread – that is, the place where the hose is screwed onto the shower. These two values must not be confused.

Outer diameter of the shower head body

This is a dimension that mainly affects aesthetics and comfort, not functionality. Shower heads have diameters ranging from 60 mm (compact, travel) to 200 mm and more (rain effect). A standard handheld shower in a tap (not a rain shower on top) usually has a diameter of 70–100 mm. When ordering a replacement shower head, this number is not critical in terms of fit – it will only affect the feeling of showering and the water volume.

Diameter of the connecting thread – this is the critical dimension

The connecting thread is the place where the hose is attached to the shower. In the vast majority of cases, it is M22×1 – a metric thread with an outer diameter of 22 mm and a pitch of 1 mm. This dimension is de facto an industry standard for shower hoses and handheld showers in European plumbing. This applies to almost all showers sold on the Slovak and European markets.

There are, however, exceptions:

  • Some older taps (manufactured before the year 2000) may have non-standard threads or different pitches.
  • Imported goods from Asia (especially cheap taps without certifications) sometimes use M24×1 or even M18×1.
  • Premium brands sometimes produce their own patented connections, which are compatible only with their own hoses.
  • Taps with built-in (fixed) outlets instead of hoses – there the shower is connected directly to a fixed pipe and the thread can be G 3/8" or other.

How to measure the thread correctly? You need a caliper or at least an accurate ruler. Measure the outer diameter of the thread at the end of the shower where the hose is attached. If you don't have a measuring tool, compare visually with a coin: the M22 thread has a diameter almost exactly the same as the diameter of a 2-euro coin (25.75 mm is the diameter of the coin, so the M22 thread will be slightly smaller).

Thread identification without a caliper – practical methods

Not everyone has a caliper at home. The following methods will help you determine the type of thread even without a precise measuring tool, or at least confirm what you probably have.

Method 1: Check the battery documentation

The fastest and most reliable method. If you have an installation manual, technical sheet, or box for the battery, the dimensions of the connection are usually listed there. Look for markings such as "connection: M22×1" or "shower: M22 thread". If you don't have paper documentation, look up the battery model on the manufacturer's website – technical sheets are usually available in PDF format.

Method 2: Try to fit a standard hose nut

If you have an old shower or a hose nut with an M22×1 thread (for example, from a replaced hose), try to fit it onto the thread of your battery. If it easily slides on and turns (without force), you have M22×1. If it doesn't fit at all, the thread is different.

Method 3: Width of the wrench flat

A shower nut (hexagonal) on an M22×1 thread usually has a wrench width of SW24 or SW27. If you place the appropriate wrench and it fits – you're on the right track. Note: this will tell you the width of the nut, not the thread itself, but since the nut and thread are designed together, it is a good indicator.

Method 4: Take a photo and consult a seller

Take a photo of the threaded part of the shower or hose connector from several angles – best with a focus (a ruler next to the part). A good photo with a numerical comparison will tell most experienced sellers immediately what kind of thread it is.

Differences between internal and external threads – where customers get confused

Another common source of confusion: external thread (AG – Außengewinde) versus internal thread (IG – Innengewinde). An external thread is cut on the outer surface of a rod or pipe – you can see the grooves from the outside. An internal thread is cut into the inside of a hole – the grooves are hidden.

In bathroom taps, the following arrangement is common:

  • The hose has internal threads M22×1 on both ends (screws onto the external thread of the shower and the external thread of the tap).

Mr. Vladimír has a Chinese-made tap bought eight years ago at a market. His shower started to leak and he wants to replace it. He buys a standard replacement shower M22×1. He tries to fit it – it doesn't work. He measures the thread: 18 mm. He has a tap with an M18×1.5 thread – a non-standard dimension that occasionally occurs in cheap Asian products. In this case, the solution is either to find a special adapter (M18 to M22), or to replace the entire tap with a standard one.

Example 3: Shower on a sensor tap – different construction

The Kováč family has a touchless tap with an infrared sensor. The shower stopped spraying evenly, so they decided to replace it. Before ordering anything, it is important to check whether it is a manual shower (on a hose) or a fixed rain shower (fixed outlet). Touchless taps often do not have a manual shower at all – they have only one outlet with a flow restrictor or a fixed rain shower. Where to look for the model marking:

  • On the bottom of the basin body (near the sink) – some manufacturers indicate the model number there.
  • On the supply valve or inside the handle (after disassembly).
  • On the hose – some brands mark the hose and the showerhead with their own number.
  • In the installation manual – if you have kept it in a folder with other documentation (which is strongly recommended by professionals).
  • On the invoice or delivery note from the original purchase.

  2. Measure the outer diameter of the threaded part using a caliper – record the number in millimeters.
  3. Count the number of threads in 10 mm length – place a ruler along the axis of the thread and count how many grooves are in 10 mm. For M22×1 it is 10 grooves in 10 mm (pitch 1 mm = 10 threads/cm). For BSP G 1/2" it is approximately 5–6 grooves in 10 mm (pitch 1.814 mm).
  4. Take a photo of the part with a ruler near the threaded part and send the photo to the seller together with the measured values.
  5. Request identification – a good seller can tell you based on the photo and dimensions what kind of thread it is and which replacement part is suitable for you.

Special cases: infrared and touch basins

Touchless and touch basins (sensor-controlled) have a slightly different construction compared to classic lever basins. Their replacement parts are therefore identified a bit differently.

Infrared basins usually do not have a manual shower – their outlet is fixed, with an aerator. If the "damaged shower" does not spray – or does not even let water flow – the problem is usually not in the showerhead, but in the sensor, solenoid valve, or electronics. Along with the thread, the type of sealing is also important when replacing shower heads and connectors. Most showers have a flat rubber gasket on the end nut, which ensures a watertight surface. This gasket is part of the shower or hose – when replacing the entire unit, it will be included.

However, if you are only replacing the gasket (the hose is sealing, but the shower or connector is leaking), you must know:

  • Inner diameter of the gasket (to fit into the nut).
  • Thickness of the gasket (usually 2–3 mm).
  • Material – preferably EPDM (resistant to drinking water) over cheap NBR rubber.

Mistake No. 3: Purchasing based on a photo. Photos in e-shops are mostly representative – the shape and color may slightly differ from reality, but the thread is always the same (M22×1), unless stated otherwise. Do not try to estimate the diameter from photos.

Some showers are labeled as "universal," which usually means they have a standard M22×1 thread – but it does not mean they will fit any hose connector or faucet. How can I determine if my thread is M22×1 or G 1/2", since they look so similar?

The most reliable method is to count the number of thread grooves over a 10 mm length. M22×1 has 10 grooves in 10 mm (fine thread), while G 1/2" has only 5–6 grooves in 10 mm (coarse thread). I have an infrared faucet and no water is flowing – do I need a replacement shower?

Probably not. Touchless faucets are controlled by electronics and a solenoid valve. If no water is flowing at all, the problem is most likely the sensor, the valve, or the power supply – not the shower head. Try restarting the faucet (disconnect power for 30 seconds), clean the sensor, and check the battery voltage (if it is battery-powered).
