  • Handheld shower head – the head itself with the nozzle, through which water flows. It has a 1/2" thread (external or internal depending on the type).

  • Outlet adapter / column neck – a fixed outlet fitting directly on the column, from which the hose is connected.
  • Sliding or fixed bracket – a wall bar or a simple hook, on which the head is placed.
  • Seals – rubber rings (O-rings) inside each threaded connection.

Sometimes a replacement bracket is also included in the package. If you order only the head or only the hose, check whether the package includes the seals – without them, the connections will not be watertight.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Replacing a shower head does not require any specialized tools. Most repairs can be done with what you have at home:

  • Adjustable wrench (AngloAmerican / Swedish wrench) or flat wrench 22–27 mm – to unscrew the original hose from the outlet adapter.
  • Soft cloth or piece of fabric – to protect the chrome surface from scratches by the wrench jaws.
  • Teflon tape (PTFE) – to seal the thread, if the new connection is screwed into a fixed thread (not a threaded connection with an O-ring).
  • Place to put the seals – a small bowl or box, so they don’t fall into the drain.
  • Flashlight or phone light – bathrooms are often poorly lit and you need good visibility when looking behind the column.

What you do not need: no floodlight, silicone, liquid sealants, or special tools. If someone claims that a handheld shower cannot be replaced without silicone – it is not true. Silicone is not even suitable for these connections, as it will make future replacement impossible.

Diagnosis – What Exactly Needs to Be Replaced?

Before you buy anything, clarify exactly what is damaged. From experience, I know that people often buy an entirely new set when replacing a single rubber seal for a few cents would be enough. On the other hand, sometimes people try to fix a cracked hose with electrical tape – this is only a temporary and incorrect solution.

  • Water dripping at the connection between the hose and the faucet or the head – the most common cause is a worn or missing O-ring (rubber sealing ring). Solution: replace the gasket, or if the thread is damaged, replace the hose.
  • Hose cracks, breaks or the braiding is visibly damaged – the entire hose must be replaced. The braiding is load-bearing, and if it breaks, the water pressure will almost always permanently damage the hose.
  • Head sprays irregularly or the water flow is weak – clogged nozzles due to limescale. First attempt: soak the head in vinegar for several hours. If that doesn't help, replace the head.
  • Plastic body of the head cracks or the handle breaks off – replace the entire head or the entire shower.
  • Rotary joint in the swivel joint squeaks or does not turn – the long-term solution is to replace it; temporarily, silicone spray may help, but only externally, not on the seals.

How to determine the correct parameters before ordering

This is a critical phase – most returns in this category are caused by the customer not verifying the dimensions before purchase. Bathroom faucets may seem standardized, but they differ in details.

Thread of the faucet outlet adapter: The vast majority of bathroom faucets have an external 1/2" BSP (G 1/2") thread. This is a global standard and practically every replacement hose on the market has 1/2" nuts on both ends. In practice, you will encounter a different dimension very rarely – for example, in some older German or Italian faucets from the 80s and 90s, where 3/8" may appear. If you have an old faucet and are unsure, unscrew the hose and measure the thread with a ruler – the external diameter of a 1/2" BSP thread is 20.95 mm.

Hose length: Standard lengths are 125 cm, 150 cm and 175 cm. For a standard bathtub faucet, the most comfortable length is 175 cm, while 150 cm is sufficient for a shower cubicle. A short hose on a bathtub faucet is very impractical.

Type of hose end: Most hoses have the same conical nut connection on both ends, compatible with a standard faucet outlet. However, there are also hoses with one end having a swivel joint – these are intended for specific types of faucets and cannot be connected to others.

Color and surface finish: Chrome, white, black, gold – this is purely an aesthetic choice. Functionally, they are equally effective.

Replacement procedure – step by step

Step 1: Preparation and safety precautions

When replacing the shower, it is not necessary to shut off the main water supply to the apartment. The shower is supplied via the faucet, which has its own shut-off mechanism – it is enough to leave the faucet in the closed position. Water will not flow.

Nevertheless, I recommend having a towel and a bucket ready. When unscrewing the hose, some residual water (a few deciliters) will always remain inside and will spill out. This is normal.

Step 2: Unscrewing the original hose

The original hose is connected to the faucet with a nut. This nut may be manually unscrewable (in the case of newer faucets) or tightly tightened and requires a wrench.

Procedure:

  1. Wrap the chrome surface of the nut connection with a soft cloth or piece of fabric.
  2. Put on an adjustable wrench and turn counterclockwise (viewed from the front of the connection).
  3. After loosening the first turn, continue by hand – put the wrench aside to avoid over-tightening or damaging the thread.
  4. Let the loosened hose drip over the bucket.
  5. Remove the old gasket from the outlet adapter (usually a flat rubber gasket or a conical rubber insert). Check the condition of the thread on the adapter – if the thread is mechanically damaged (broken teeth), the entire adapter or the entire faucet will need to be replaced.

Repeat the same procedure on the other end of the hose – at the connection with the original shower head.

Step 3: Checking the condition of the outlet adapter

This is a step that many people skip and later regret. After unscrewing the hose, take a flashlight and look at the thread of the outlet adapter. Look for:

  • Limescale deposits on the thread – remove them with an old toothbrush soaked in vinegar.
  • Mechanical damage to the thread – broken or deformed thread teeth. If the damage is extensive, the new hose will leak regardless of the gasket.
  • Corrosion – on some cheaper faucets (especially brass with poor quality chrome plating), greenish corrosion may appear in the thread area. Mild corrosion is not a problem, but serious corrosion requires replacing the adapter.

Step 4: Preparing the new connection

Before installing the new hose, check that the sealing ring is properly seated in the nut connection of the hose. In the case of a complete set (head + hose), spare gaskets are usually included in the packaging. A properly seated gasket must:

  • Sit evenly in the seating surface of the nut – not pushed to one side.
  • Be undamaged – no cuts, cracks or deformations.
  • Have the correct thickness – never reuse the gasket from the original hose, as it is already compressed and will not seal properly.

Warning: If the manufacturer states that the hose has an integrated gasket (vulcanized directly into the nut), do not insert an additional gasket – this would damage the connection and you would not be able to achieve a proper seal.

Teflon tape (PTFE) on shower hoses – this is a topic that causes a lot of confusion. Shower hoses with nut connections and an O-ring do not need and should not have Teflon tape on the thread. The sealing is ensured by the rubber O-ring, not by the thread itself. Teflon tape adds nothing to this type of connection and can cause uneven seating of the nut sealing surface. Use Teflon tape only if it is a conical thread without an O-ring (typically in fixed pipe systems) – in that case, it is appropriate.

Step 5: Installation of the new hose

Installation is essentially the reverse of disassembly. Follow this procedure:

  1. Insert the new gasket into the nut at the end of the hose intended for the faucet.
  2. Mount the nut onto the thread of the outlet adapter and start turning clockwise by hand. Never start with a wrench – risk of damaging the thread.
  3. Continue turning by hand until you feel resistance from the gasket. You should be able to tighten the nut fully by hand.
  4. Finish tightening with a wrench – maximum ¼ turn beyond the manual tightening. No more. The brass thread of the adapter can be easily damaged if the torque is exceeded.
  5. Repeat the same procedure – inserting the gasket and installation – for the other end of the hose, where the showerhead connects.

Step 6: Installation of the bracket (if included in the set)

If the new shower set also includes a replacement sliding or fixed wall bracket, install it before the first test. Most brackets are mounted using suction cups or screws. When screwing into tiles, pay attention to:

  • The correct drill bit for tiles (diamond or carbide) – a regular steel drill bit could crack the tile.
  • Fixing with anchors of the appropriate size – usually a 6 mm diameter is sufficient.
  • Sealing the holes with silicone before mounting the cover – this prevents water from seeping into the wall.

If the old bracket is in good condition and you are only replacing the hose and head, you can skip this step.

Step 7: Leak test

This is the final, but very important phase. Procedure:

  1. Open the cold water faucet, keep the pressure at minimum.
  2. Visually inspect both connections – look for any dripping or condensation.
  3. Dry the connections with a dry cloth and wait 30 seconds. If the cloth remains dry, the connection is tight.
  4. Increase the pressure to maximum and check again.
  5. If you see dripping at one of the connections, turn off the faucet and tighten the nut by a few more turns. If that doesn’t help, unscrew it, check the gasket position, and repeat the installation.

Leakage under maximum pressure that is not visible at minimum pressure is almost always caused by incorrect seating or a missing gasket – not insufficient tightening.

Special situations and common complications

Stuck nut – the hose cannot be unscrewed

An old hose that has been in place for ten years may have a nut "welded" to the adapter due to corrosion. In such a case, never apply brute force – you risk breaking the adapter or the entire outlet arm, which is a much bigger problem.

Procedure for a stuck nut:

  • Spray penetrating oil (WD-40 or similar) onto the joint and let it sit for 20–30 minutes.
  • Use a longer lever – extend the wrench handle with a pipe to increase torque without sudden jerks.
  • Alternate turning in both directions – small loosening and back – this helps break up the corrosion.
  • If nothing works, consult a plumber – in extreme cases, it is sometimes easier to replace the entire faucet rather than fight with corrosion.

Adapter turns together with the nut

In some bathtub faucets, the outlet adapter is not firmly locked and may start rotating together with the nut when unscrewing. In such a case, you need to hold the adapter with a second wrench (a counter wrench). Important: hold the adapter only by the edges of the body, not by the chrome pipe – it is fragile and can break.

Replacing only the gaskets without replacing the hose

If the hose is visually in good condition but leaks at the connection, you can try replacing only the gaskets. Rubber O-rings for 1/2" nut connections are available at any good hardware store – outer diameter usually 20–21 mm, inner 15–16 mm, thickness 2–3 mm. Practical tips from the field

Do not over-tighten brass nut connections with force. This is something we see very often in practice – the customer is afraid of water leakage and tightens the nut so strongly that it tears the gasket. A rubber O-ring works by pressure, not by force. If it still leaks after proper tightening, the problem is elsewhere (damaged gasket, incorrect thread engagement) – not due to insufficient tightening.

Always replace the gaskets when replacing, even if they look fine. Rubber ages and hardens. An old gasket that visually looks OK may leak after reinstallation because it has lost its elasticity. New gaskets cost only a few cents and will save you frustration.

Don't underestimate the hose length. In practice, it often happens that a customer buys a shorter hose "because it's aimed at the bathtub" and then gets angry that it doesn't reach the corner of the tub. Better to choose a hose that is 25 cm longer than shorter – excess length can be rolled up, but missing length cannot.

Don't forget the surface color. If your valve is brushed chrome, nickel or black – order the same surface finish for the shower as well. A mismatch looks unprofessional, but worse yet – some cheap combinations of different metal surfaces together can galvanically react and accelerate corrosion.

When reliably attaching the hose to the head, make sure that the swivel joint (if the head has one) is tightened, but not jammed. The head should be able to rotate in the joint – this is an intentional feature, not a defect. If the joint is completely stiff, the hose will twist as a whole instead of the head, which puts stress on the connection at the valve.

How to extend the lifespan of a new shower

A shower set won't last forever, but with proper maintenance you can significantly extend its lifespan:

  • Regularly clean the nozzles of the head from limescale. Once a month, spray limescale remover or soak the head in diluted vinegar for an hour. Limescale buildup is the most common reason for replacing a functional head.
  • Don't let the hose hang full of water. After each shower, keep the valve closed and let the hose drip dry. Standing water in the hose accelerates limescale formation and, in the case of plastic hoses, also promotes microbial growth.
  • Don't twist the hose into sharp loops. A flexible hose is durable, but repeated sharp bends in the same place shorten its lifespan.
  • Don't place heavy objects on the hose or step on it. This sounds obvious, but it happens with children in the bathroom.

Do I need to turn off the water in the apartment before replacing the shower?

No, it's not necessary. The shower hose is connected after the valve, so it's enough to keep the valve in the closed position. Water won't leak out. The only "leak" is the residual water in the hose, which will flow out when you unscrew it – usually about 0.5–1 deciliter. Keep a towel or a small bucket nearby.

My new hose is leaking at the joint, even though I tightened it properly. What am I doing wrong?

The most common cause is an improperly seated or missing gasket. Unscrew the nut, remove the gasket and check if it sits evenly in the seating area. Also check if you accidentally inserted two gaskets (e.g. old plus new) – this causes uneven seating. Another possible cause is a damaged thread on the valve adapter – if the thread is mechanically damaged, the gasket won't hold no matter how much you tighten it, and the adapter needs to be replaced.
