A dripping or leaking shower head is one of the most common bathroom problems we encounter in our professional practice. At first glance, this may seem like a trivial issue, but it can be quite annoying – from unpleasant dripping at night to visible limescale deposits, non-functional water flow, and eventually even damage to the mixer or the shower set. However, most of the causes can be handled by a layperson, provided they know where to look for the problem and what exactly to replace.
In this article, we will cover all typical causes of leakage and non-sealing of shower heads, describe how to identify them, and show how to eliminate them – mostly without calling a plumber. This article is intended for owners of standard bathrooms with classic lever mixers, as well as those who have thermostats or touchless shower sets.
How to identify exactly where the leak is
Before you start replacing anything, it is important to precisely determine the location of the leak. Experience shows that as many as 40% of customers come in saying that "the shower head is leaking," when in fact the real problem is at the hose connection to the mixer or in the damaged hose itself. These differences are important – the way to fix a leak at a thread is different from fixing a crack in the head body.
The diagnostic process is simple: hold the shower set with your hand and rotate each connection – the hose connection to the mixer, the hose connection to the bracket (hook), the hose connection to the head. Let the water flow and observe where the moisture appears. If water is dripping directly from the head nozzles even after the mixer is closed, the problem is in the mixer cartridge, not in the head itself.
Four places where a leak can occur
- Hose and mixer connection – most often a damaged gasket or thread
- Hose and shower arm / bracket connection – less common, but can happen with plastic connectors
- Hose and shower arm / head connection – worn rubber insert or damaged thread
- Head body itself – cracked casing, clogged nozzles or damaged flow switch
Most common cause: worn or missing gasket
Approximately 60 to 70 percent of all leakage cases are solved by replacing the gasket – a small rubber washer (O-ring or flat gasket) that sits in the thread of the hose and head connection, or the hose and mixer connection. This gasket is made of rubber or silicone, and although it is a small part worth just a few cents, its absence or wear will cause continuous dripping.
The gasket can be worn for two reasons: either it is truly old and the rubber has hardened and cracked (after 5–10 years this is common), or it was forgotten or damaged during the last head disassembly. This often happens, for example, when cleaning the head from limescale, when someone removes the hose, cleans it, and reassembles it without checking the gasket.
The solution is simple: unscrew the head from the hose (turn counterclockwise), and inspect the rubber insert in the thread. If it is hard, cracked, or missing, simply replace it with a new one. Gaskets for shower connections are standardized – the most common inner diameter is 22–24 mm for a G1/2" thread. Damaged or twisted thread – when you need to replace the whole head
The thread of the connection (typically G1/2" external or internal) can be damaged due to excessive tightening, the head falling on tiles, or simply long-term use. A damaged thread is evident when even a new gasket does not help – water still seeps through, the connection "breathes," or the hose cannot be tightened properly.
In such a case, you need to replace either the hose (if the thread is damaged on the hose side) or the entire shower including the head. It is not worth trying to repair the thread – plastic and brass threads in this price category cannot be reliably repaired, and each additional tightening only worsens the problem.

Scale and clogged nozzles – when it "leaks" where it shouldn't
Another very common problem: the head "leaks" from other places than the nozzles – for example from the sides, from the body seam, or the water streams unintentionally spread to the sides. In most cases, this is due to clogged nozzles caused by limescale deposits. In areas with hard water (Bratislava, the area around Trnava, Nitra, many cities in western Slovakia), limescale accumulates inside the head within a few months of intensive use.
When some nozzles are clogged and others are not, an uneven pressure distribution occurs inside the head. Water finds alternative paths – it seeps through plastic joints, takes directions outside the nozzles or starts leaking around the rubber membrane with holes. The stream appears "broken", water sprays sideways or leaks from places where it shouldn't.
How to remove scale from nozzles
The cleaning process is simple and does not require any special equipment:
- Remove the head from the hose (turn 180° counterclockwise).
- Place the entire head into a container with warm vinegar solution or descaling agent (e.g. citric acid dissolved in water – approx. 1 tablespoon per 200 ml of water). A temperature of 40–50 °C will speed up the reaction.
- Let it soak for at least 30 minutes, up to 2–4 hours for heavy scaling.
- After removing, gently pierce any remaining nozzles with a soft needle or pin – do not use sharp metal objects that could damage the silicone membrane.
- Rinse with clean water, reattach and test the water flow.
If cleaning does not help even after repeated attempts, the silicone membrane with the nozzles is likely physically damaged (gum aging, mechanical injury). In this case, nothing else will help but replacing the head.
Defect of the flow switch (mode switch)
Modern shower heads have one, two or even three flow modes – compact stream, rain, massage. Switching is done by rotating the central part of the head or a side wheel. This mechanism contains an internal valve with a rubber seal that redirects water into different nozzle circuits.
When this switch wears out or gets limescale inside, it behaves unpredictably – water leaks from multiple modes at once, "splashes" to unwanted places or cannot be switched to the desired mode. In most cases, it is a worn O-ring inside the switching mechanism.
Repairing this type of issue is usually not possible without disassembling the entire head, which is practically impossible with cheap plastic models (they are glued or joined by ultrasonic welding). With more expensive brass or chrome-plated heads, it is technically possible, but requires certain skills. In most practical cases, we recommend replacing the entire shower head – the cost of a new head is lower than the time spent trying to repair an inaccessible mechanism.
Dripping from the head after closing the mixer – a common mistake
This situation causes a lot of confusion: the customer says that the "shower head is leaking", but in reality, the head itself is not leaking – the problem is in the mixer cartridge. After closing the lever, water still drips from the head because the cartridge in the mixer is not sealing and allows a small amount of water to pass, which then drips exactly through the lowest path – through the shower head.
How to recognize it? Simply: disconnect the hose from the mixer and leave the lever in the closed position. If water is dripping from the outlet of the mixer (where the hose was), the problem is in the mixer cartridge, not in the head. In this case, replacing the cartridge (available separately for most lever mixers) or the entire mixer will help.
On the other hand, if water does not drip after disconnecting the hose, but it was dripping from the head before – the problem is in the hose or the head, typically a hose defect (inner rubber cracking, water leaking through the hose wall at higher pressure).
Cracked or damaged shower hose
Shower hoses are made of PVC or brass braid with an inner rubber hose. After long-term use, with water temperature above 60 °C or after mechanical damage (fall, door jamming), the inner rubber can crack. This is manifested by swelling of the hose at the crack site, noticeable moisture on the braid surface, or direct water leakage at higher pressure.
A damaged hose is not repaired – it is replaced entirely. The standard length of shower hoses is 150 cm or 175 cm, less common are 120 cm or 200 cm. The thread is almost always G1/2" on both ends. When choosing a new one, prefer a hose with brass braid over plastic – it will last significantly longer at higher water temperatures.
Leakage at the fixed shower arm (wall outlet)
If you have a shower connected via a fixed shower arm (wall outlet, so-called "gooseneck"), the leakage can also occur at the connection between the arm and the wall. Here, sealant or Teflon tape is most commonly used on the thread. If the connection is old, the sealant may be cracked and the thread may start to leak water, which then runs down the wall into the shower tray or behind the tiles.
In this case, the arm must be unscrewed, the old sealant and thread removed, and the thread resealed – either with Teflon tape (5–7 layers in the direction of the thread) or with plumber’s sealant for water supply lines. Make sure to tighten the arm firmly, but without excessive force that could damage the thread.
Special case: touchless and sensor batteries
If you have a touchless water battery with an infrared sensor in your bathroom or WC, the situation is a bit different. These batteries are equipped with a solenoid valve – an electromagnetically controlled shut-off. If the sensor fails or sends incorrect signals (for example, due to dirt in front of the sensor, a worn-out battery, or a sensor malfunction), the valve may remain permanently open or not close reliably – the result is water flowing without the presence of a hand, or alternatively, a weak and irregular flow.
In such a case, the problem is not in the shower head or hose, but in the electronics. Water pressure and its influence on leaks
An interesting observation from practice: some leaks appear only at higher water pressure and are not noticeable during regular use. The typical water pressure in apartment buildings in Slovakia ranges between 2 and 5 bars. If you have a pressure-reducing valve in your house, it may be set too high or may have failed – a pressure of 6 or more bars overloads seals, plastic shower heads, and hoses.
The recommended pressure for shower sets is 1.5 – 3 bars. If you suspect that you have higher pressure, borrow or buy a simple pressure gauge (manometer) with a G1/2" thread and measure the pressure directly at the battery outlet. A pressure-reducing valve for the entire apartment, if you don’t have one or it is damaged, is installed by a plumber – an investment in such a valve (20–50 EUR plus installation) can protect you from repeated problems not only in the shower, but in the entire bathroom.
How to properly install a shower to prevent leaks from the start
A large portion of leak cases are caused by improper installation right from the beginning – either during a new installation or after cleaning. A few rules that eliminate most problems:
- Never skip the gasket – always check its presence before tightening. New heads usually come with a gasket, but it may fall out of the packaging.
- Tighten the thread by hand, not with pliers – for G1/2" threads on shower hoses, the rule is “tight by hand + half a turn with a wrench.” Excessive force will damage the thread.
- Do not use Teflon tape on the hose thread to the battery – these connections are designed to be sealed with an O-ring or flat gasket, not with tape. Tape in this location may prevent the gasket from seating properly.
- After installation, let the water run at full flow for at least 30 seconds – the gasket will settle and any leaks will be visible immediately.
- Check the condition of the hose – if the hose is old and cracked, a new head will not last long on it. It is better to replace the entire set at once.

When is a repair worth it and when is a full shower replacement better
Deciding between repair and replacement is the most common question customers call with. From a practical point of view, a simple rule applies:
- Gasket – always repair: the cost of a gasket is negligible (a few cents), and the replacement takes 2 minutes.
- Hose – consider the age of the shower: if the hose is more than 5 years old and cracked, it is worth replacing the entire set, including the head.
- Clogged nozzles – try cleaning first: if it doesn’t help, replace the head.
- Damaged thread – replacement: do not attempt to repair the thread, replace it.
- Malfunctioning mode switch – replace the head: do not attempt to repair the internal mechanism of the switch on cheap models.
- Older shower set (8+ years) – we recommend a full replacement: even if the current issue seems minor, another problem is just a matter of months.

Special situations and edge cases
Leaking after heating – thermal expansion
Less common, but real problem: the shower doesn't leak when cold, but starts dripping after the water is heated (40–50 °C). The cause is different thermal expansion of materials – the rubber seal expands differently at temperature than the plastic or brass thread. If the seal is too worn or of incorrect thickness, it loses its seal precisely when hot water is running due to thermal movement. Solution: replace the seal with a silicone one (more heat-resistant than regular rubber), or use a seal that is 0.5 mm thicker.
Shower "spits" air and water
Air in the pipes causes pulsation and irregular spraying, which may look like a head malfunction. The most common cause is air in the system after repair or water supply interruption. Solution: fully open the cold water tap (not through the shower, but through the sink or bathtub outlet) and let it run for several minutes until the air is purged. If the problem recurs regularly, it may be a leak in the supply line – this is a job for a plumber.
Hose unwinds or twists by itself
This is not a technical leak, but it can happen that a twisting hose increases mechanical stress on the connections and gradually loosens the seal. Metal hoses with incorrect braiding or cheap PVC hoses tend to have "memory" – they remember the twisted position. The solution is a hose with a swivel nut (at least on one end), or replace it with a higher quality model with brass braiding.
Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Why does the shower drip after closing the handle, even after I replaced the hose seal?
If you have replaced the hose seal, but the dripping continues, the problem is most likely not in the shower, but in the cartridge of the valve. The cartridge is the internal valve of the valve body, and if it is worn, it allows a small amount of water to pass even in the closed position – this water then runs down through the shower. Check this by disconnecting the hose from the valve body and watching whether water drips from the valve body opening. If it does, the cartridge of the valve needs to be replaced.
Can I use Teflon tape on the shower arm thread?
We do not recommend using Teflon tape on the G1/2" thread for connecting the hose to the valve body – the sealing here is done by a flat O-ring, not by thread sealing, and the tape may prevent the rubber insert from seating properly. On the other hand, Teflon tape is suitable and recommended for the thread of a fixed shower arm (wall outlet) – the thread there is conical or straight without a flat seal.
How long do seals in shower connections last?
With normal use (1–3 times per day) and medium-hard water, rubber seals last 5–8 years, silicone ones 8–12 years. Their lifespan is shortened by hard water (which accelerates rubber hardening), water temperatures above 60 °C, mechanical damage during disassembly, and low-quality materials. A good practice is to inspect the seal every time you disassemble the hose and replace it immediately if in doubt – the cost of a seal is negligible.
Is it worth buying a replacement shower for a 10-year-old valve body?
It depends on the condition of the valve body. If the valve body is otherwise in good condition (the handle moves smoothly, the cartridge doesn't leak, the metal is not corroded), a new replacement shower makes full sense and will extend the life of the whole set by several more years. If the valve body is worn in other ways – stiff handle, dripping through the shut-off, visible corrosion – consider replacing the entire valve body and shower together.
How do I know my shower has a G1/2" thread and how to buy the right replacement?
The G1/2" thread is the absolute standard for all common shower sets in Europe today. If you have a classic lever valve without exotic configuration, you can be 99% sure the thread is G1/2". The outer diameter of the thread is 20.9 mm. Can I use a commercial descaler to clean the head?
Yes, but with caution. Strong acids (such as concentrated hydrochloric acid used in some industrial products) can damage the chrome finish and silicone nozzles. Safe and sufficiently effective are solutions of vinegar (white table vinegar, 5–8%), citric acid, or regular commercial descalers intended for bathroom fixtures. Always check the product label to see if it is suitable for chrome surfaces and silicone.

A leaking or dripping shower head is in most cases a problem with a simple and inexpensive solution. The key is correct diagnosis – determining exactly where the leak is coming from, whether it is a seal, thread, limescale, damaged hose, or valve cartridge. Each of these causes has a clear solution, and only in exceptional cases is a plumber needed.
