A dryer costs several hundred euros, while a paper towel dispenser costs just a few tens. It seems the decision is clear – and yet this is one of the most common financial misunderstandings in the operation of restrooms and social facilities. The real costs are hidden in long-term consumption, and it is precisely here that the picture turns around.

In this article, we will look at the entire economics of both solutions – from kilowatt-hours and tariffs, through paper consumption, waste removal, to hidden costs that most operators do not consider at all. I will provide specific numbers, real calculation scenarios from practice, and help you make an informed decision based on facts, not feelings.

How hand dryers actually consume energy

A hand dryer is an electrical appliance whose core is a resistive heater (or in more modern models, a low-temperature air jet without heating) and an electric motor driving a fan. The consumed energy depends on three basic parameters: installed power (W), operating time (seconds/minutes per day), and electricity price (€/kWh).

The power consumption of standard hand dryers ranges from about 900 W for more economical models up to 2,200 W for powerful hot-air devices. Modern automatic hand dryers with high-speed cold air (so-called "jet" technology) can dry hands in 10–12 seconds at a power consumption of around 1,000–1,300 W, significantly reducing their overall consumption per cycle compared to older models with a power consumption of 1,800 W and drying time of 25–30 seconds.

Example: HAKL SR2100 hand dryer has a power consumption of 2,100 W. If we consider an average drying cycle of about 20 seconds (a realistic estimate for normal use), one toilet visit consumes approximately 11.7 Wh. This is less than a 100 W light bulb lit for 7 minutes. In absolute terms, it is minimal – the problem arises when these minimal amounts are summed over thousands of cycles per year.

Real daily and annual consumption: numbers from operational practice

Calculating consumption is straightforward, but it requires realistic input data. The biggest mistake I see among operators is underestimating the actual number of uses. A paper towel dispenser visibly "changes state" (the towel decreases), no one monitors the electricity meter of a hand dryer – so electricity subjectively appears cheap.

Calculation: (number of cycles × power in W × cycle time in seconds) / 3,600 = kWh per day. The electricity price of 0.20 €/kWh is a conservative estimate – in 2024, prices for small consumers in Slovakia mostly range between 0.18 and 0.26 €/kWh. For business consumers, it may be slightly lower, but not dramatically so.

For a restaurant with 200 cycles per day, this amounts to roughly 170 € per year for electricity for the hand dryer. This is a figure that needs to be compared with the alternative.

Costs of paper towels: what is included

Paper towels appear cheap at first glance – an industrial Z-fold roll for 5–8 €, a dispenser for 15 €, done. Reality, however, is more complex.

Direct cost of paper

An average user takes 1.5 to 2.5 paper towels per hand wash (studies from the UK and USA consistently show a value of around 1.8 pieces). An industrial Z-fold paper towel weighs about 3–4 g, and the price per piece when buying in bulk (carton = 3 000–5 000 pieces) ranges between 0.6 cents and 1.2 cents per piece, i.e., 0.006–0.012 €.

For a restaurant with 200 uses per day and an average consumption of 2 pieces = 400 towels/day:

  • 400 towels × 0.009 € = 3.60 € per day
  • 365 days × 3.60 € = 1 314 € per year just for paper

This is eight times more than 170 € per year for electricity with a hand dryer. And we're just getting started.

Waste removal costs

Paper towels take up volume. A restaurant with 200 visitors to the WC per day produces approximately 1.2–1.5 kg of wet paper waste per day (wet towels weigh more), which is 430–550 kg per year. Waste collection in Slovakia ranges from 0.08 to 0.25 € per kilogram (depending on the contract with the waste company and the region). Conservatively 0.12 €/kg:

  • 500 kg × 0.12 € = 60 € per year for waste removal related to paper towels

Staff time for refilling and cleaning

The dispenser needs to be refilled. In a busy establishment, this may be several times a day. Waste from the bin next to the dispenser needs to be taken out. Cleaning up wet paper scraps from the floor (not everyone throws everything into the bin) is a real issue. Conservative estimate: 10 minutes of staff time per day in addition to operation without paper towels, at an hourly wage of 6 € (including taxes: ~9 €/h):

  • 10 min/day × 9 €/h = 1.50 € per day = 547 € per year

Total annual costs for paper towels in this restaurant: 1 314 + 60 + 547 = 1 921 € per year, compared to 170 € for electricity with a hand dryer. The difference is 1 751 € per year in favor of the dryer. Operators often ask: "How many years will it take for my dryer to pay for itself?" The answer depends on the traffic, but the results are surprisingly fast. Look at the specific calculations:

Scenario A: Small office (40 cycles/day)

  • Annual electricity costs for the dryer: ~20 €
  • Annual costs for paper towels (40 people × 2 pieces × 0.009 €/piece × 250 working days): ~180 €
  • Savings: 160 € per year
  • Investment in a dryer (e.g., HAKL SR AB19): ~150–200 €

Scenario B: Medium restaurant (200 cycles/day)

View of different types of dryers in terms of consumption

Not all dryers are equally energy efficient. An older model with a heating element and a low-speed fan consumes significantly more per cycle than a modern device with optimized aerodynamics. We distinguish several basic concepts:

Classic hot air dryers

Power consumption 1 500–2 200 W, drying time 25–40 seconds. Consumption per cycle 10–24 Wh. These models are cheaper to buy, but more expensive to operate. Suitable where usage frequency is low (up to 50 cycles/day). High-speed dryers (jet-air)

The higher price of the device (300–600 €) is compensated by lower consumption when used with high frequency. These models are ideal for facilities with 200+ cycles per day.

Automatic dryers with infrared sensor

In real operation, this can reduce actual consumption by 15–25 % compared to models with fixed timers, where the timer runs out even if the user has left.

Impact of electricity tariff on overall calculation

The price of electricity has a significant impact on the result, but not so much as to disrupt the basic economics of hand dryers. Even at a price of 0.30 €/kWh (upper scenario for SR in 2024), the annual electricity consumption of a restaurant dryer will be only about 255 €, which is still far below the cost of paper towels. From the table it is clear that even doubling the electricity price would not disrupt the economic advantage of a hand dryer in an operation with 200 visits to the WC per day. The decisive factor is actually the frequency of visits – at very low frequency (less than 10–15 cycles per day), the equation may slightly shift, but even there the paper alternative is not clearly cheaper when all hidden costs are considered.

Environmental side of the equation: it's not just about money

Many operators today are also considering the environmental footprint of their operation – out of conviction, but also due to customers and possible certifications (ISO 14001, green buildings, LEED). In this context, the comparison is even more one-sided:

The production of one paper towel (including wood harvesting, pulp production, paper process, packaging and transport) produces, according to various studies, 10–17 g of CO₂ equivalent. For a restaurant with 200 visits and a consumption of 2 towels per visit: 400 × 15 g = 6 000 g = 6 kg of CO₂ per day, which is roughly 2.19 tons of CO₂ per year.

Electricity in SR has an emission factor of around 200–250 g CO₂/kWh in 2024 (depending on the energy mix in a given year). For a dryer with annual consumption of 0.85 MWh (at 200 cycles, 2100W, 20s): 850 kWh × 0.22 kg CO₂/kWh = 187 kg CO₂ per year. This is more than a 10-fold difference in favor of the dryer. And if the operation uses green electricity or has solar panels, the emission footprint of the dryer drops to near zero.

To this must be added waste: paper towels, although technically recyclable, in practice almost always end up in municipal waste – wet and contaminated towels are rejected by recycling plants. The dryer creates no consumable waste.

Hygienic aspects: hand dryers vs. paper towels

This aspect deserves special recognition, because in professional circles this topic is lively and polarizing. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, but modern automatic hand dryers significantly shift the balance.

Old hot-air dryers (with open air intake without filtration) really recirculate air from the room, including bacteria. This was a real hygiene issue. Modern dryers with HEPA filters or UV sterilization of incoming air eliminate this disadvantage. Automatic control (infrared sensor) also removes touch contact – the user does not touch anything that hundreds of other people have previously touched.

Paper towels are relatively neutral in this respect – they do not require touching the dispenser (with proper dispensing), but the trash bin near the dispenser is a microbiologically riskier element than the dryer. When paper towels are justified despite this

It would be dishonest to claim that a hand dryer is always and in all situations better. There are scenarios where the paper alternative makes sense:

  • Temporary operations – construction sites, events, temporary toilets. Investment in a fixed electric dryer does not pay off if the operation lasts only a few weeks.
  • Spaces without electrical supply – garden cottages, portable toilets, places without grid connection.
  • Special hygiene requirements – some food businesses require single-use towels for specific cleaning procedures, where documenting hygiene procedures is mandatory.
  • Very low traffic – if the toilet is used by 3–5 people per day, total paper consumption is negligible and the investment in a dryer will never pay off.
  • Equipment for seniors or people with limited mobility – for some users, a paper towel is ergonomically more comfortable, a dryer requires a certain length of standing in place.

In all other cases – that is, in the vast majority of commercial and public operations – the economics clearly favor the dryer.

Practical tips for minimizing hand dryer consumption

If you decide on a hand dryer, a few simple measures will help optimize its consumption:

  • Proper timer setting – most dryers allow you to set the automatic shut-off time. Set it to the minimum needed for real hand drying (20–30 seconds is enough). Factory settings (40–60 s) are often unnecessarily long.
  • Choice of model with IR sensor – automatic shut-off when hands are removed saves electricity whenever the user finishes earlier. As we mentioned, HAKL SR AB19 has this feature.

  • Regular filter maintenance – a clogged filter reduces airflow, the motor works longer and harder. Cleaning the filter every 2–3 months is a minimum in busier operations.

An economic calculation would be incomplete without considering the lifespan of the device. High-quality hand dryers are designed for 7–10 years of operation, with the motor's lifespan being a key factor. Manufacturers such as HAKL specify the motor's lifespan in hours of operation (typically 1 000–3 000 hours), which corresponds to 7–12 years under real-world usage.

For the TCO (total cost of ownership) calculation over 10 years in a restaurant (200 cycles/day):

  • Purchase of the dryer: 250 €
  • Electricity over 10 years: 170 € × 10 = 1 700 €
  • Maintenance (filters, possible repair): ~200 €
  • TCO dryer: 2 150 €

For paper towels over 10 years:

  • Paper: 1 314 € × 10 = 13 140 €
  • Waste disposal: 60 € × 10 = 600 €
  • Labor costs: 547 € × 10 = 5 470 €
  • Dispensers (replaced once every 3–4 years): ~80 €
  • TCO paper towels: 19 290 €

Difference over 10 years: 17 140 €. In larger operations with multiple WC blocks, this amount multiplies by the number of dispensers/dryers. A shopping center with 20 dryers will save more than 300 000 € over ten years of operation compared to paper towels.

How much does one "use" of a hand dryer actually cost in euros?

With a power consumption of 2 100 W, drying time of 20 seconds, and electricity cost of 0.20 €/kWh: (2 100 × 20) / 3 600 × 0.20 = 0.00233 €, which is approximately 0.23 cents. For comparison: one paper towel costs 0.6–1.2 cents, and most people take 2 pieces. One paper towel drying session thus costs 1.2–2.4 cents – five to ten times more than the dryer.

Is a hand dryer worth it in a small office with 10–15 employees?

Yes, although the payback period is slower – around 18–24 months. The absolute savings are smaller (~100–150 € per year), but after the dryer is paid off, operation is practically cost-free (only electricity). In the long-term horizon of 5+ years, the dryer is economically more advantageous here as well. Additionally, the need for regular ordering of paper towels and managing supplies is eliminated.

Does the economics change significantly if electricity prices rise by 50 %?

Not dramatically. If the electricity price rises from 0.20 to 0.30 €/kWh, the annual electricity costs for the dryer increase from 170 € to 255 € (restaurant scenario). This is an increase of 85 €. At the same time, energy price increases usually also raise the cost of paper towels (paper production is energy-intensive), so the difference remains similar. Conclusion: electricity price increases do not reverse the economic equation.

What about repair costs for dryers? Are they frequent?

High-quality dryers are mechanically simple devices – a motor and a resistive heater. Failures are relatively rare if basic maintenance (filter cleaning) is followed.
