1. The dryer does not start at all – no reaction
This is the most common service case. The customer reports that the dryer is "dead". Before any disassembly, it is important to proceed systematically from the simplest to the most complex.
Step 1: Power supply check
This seemingly trivial matter accounts for surprisingly large percentage of service calls in practice. Check whether the socket or fixed supply has voltage. Use a voltage tester or multimeter. Check the circuit breakers in the distribution board – dryers typically trip a 10 A or 16 A circuit breaker. Be careful with the residual current device (RCD/FI): it is mandatory in bathrooms and will trip the entire branch in case of insulation failure. If the RCD is tripped and immediately trips again after resetting, the problem is inside the dryer – in this case, do not proceed further, call an electrician.
Step 2: Power cable and terminal block
If the dryer is connected via a standard corded cable, check for visible insulation damage, breakage at the connector, or loose terminals. For fixed installations (which are common for power ratings above 2 kW), check the connection in the dryer's terminal block – a loose terminal will break the circuit. Tighten the terminals using a torque screwdriver (typically 0.5 – 0.8 Nm for M4–M5 terminal blocks).
Step 3: Internal fuse in the device
Most dryers have an internal fuse (5×20 mm or 6×32 mm, commonly 6.3 A – 16 A depending on power). When this fuse blows, the device behaves exactly as if it has no power. The fuse can be found either directly on the board or in a plastic holder on the power supply. A visual inspection is not sufficient – the fuse may be broken inside without visible damage. Always measure with a multimeter in resistance or continuity mode.
Step 4: Control board and relay
If the power supply and fuse are in order, the problem is more likely to be in the control electronics. Visible symptoms on the board: burnt capacitors (bulged top, electrolyte leakage), darkened joints (cold solder), burnt traces from overvoltage. 2. The dryer works, but does not blow air (the motor does not rotate)
The device emits a status light, the heating element temperature is normal, you may hear a faint buzzing – but the air flow is zero or minimal. This symptom clearly indicates problems with the motor or the blower fan.
Clogged or blocked fan
The fan of a hand dryer draws air from the bathroom space. After months of operation, a combination of dust, textile fibers, hair, and oily aerosols (especially in devices near a kitchen) settles on the blades. When the fan is sufficiently dirty, the resistance increases to such an extent that the motor either does not rotate at all or rotates slowly and overheats. Solution: unscrew the cover, gently clean the fan with compressed air or a soft brush. Never use water or aggressive cleaners directly on electrical parts.
Worn motor bearings
The fan motor runs continuously during each cycle. Bearings have a typical lifespan of 10,000 – 30,000 operating hours depending on the quality of the device and the conditions. Symptom: when starting up, you hear grinding or squeaking, the fan rotates with difficulty (or needs "help" to start). After replacing the bearings (or the entire motor block), the dryer is as good as new.
Burned motor winding
If the motor emits a characteristic burnt smell, or there is visible discoloration on the winding, the winding is damaged and the motor needs to be replaced. This fault most often occurs due to long-term neglect of cleaning (the motor overheats) or due to overvoltage in the grid.
3. The dryer does not heat – it only blows cold air
The motor runs normally, the air flow is sufficient, but the air is cold or barely warm. The causes are almost exclusively in the thermal part of the device.
Thermal fuse – most common cause
This is a one-time fuse located directly on the heating element or in its immediate vicinity. Its purpose is to protect the device from fire in case of overheating. It activates irreversibly when the set temperature is exceeded (typically 130 °C – 180 °C depending on the model). When it blows, the heating element is disconnected, but the motor continues to operate – hence, it blows cold air.
How to verify: use a multimeter to measure the resistance between both terminals of the thermal fuse. A functional fuse has practically zero ohms resistance (continuity). A blown fuse has infinite resistance. Replacement is simple – the fuse costs a few crowns, but always remove the cause of overheating, otherwise the new fuse will blow again (usually within a few weeks).
Thermostat and bimetallic switch
Unlike a thermal fuse, a thermostat is a repeatable switch that regulates the temperature of the output air. If the thermostat fails in the "off" position, the heating element remains permanently disconnected. Measurement: multimeter in resistance mode. A functional thermostat has minimal resistance (continuity) at room temperature. A faulty one has infinite resistance or unstable values.
Burned-out heating element
The heating element itself (resistive wire or PTC ceramic element) may be broken. PTC (positive temperature coefficient) elements are more common in modern devices – they have the advantage of self-regulation and overheating is not as likely as with resistive wires. A broken PTC element or its resistive equivalent is diagnosed again with a multimeter. Compare the measured value with technical parameters (for 2000 W at 230 V, the resistance at cold temperature is typically 25 – 35 Ω).
4. Automatic sensor does not react or reacts randomly
Modern hand dryers are equipped with an infrared (IR) sensor – you don't have to pull a lever or press a button. When the sensor fails, the device either does not react to hands placed near it or starts automatically without a person being present. Both situations are equally unpleasant.
Optics of the sensor are dirty
The IR sensor works in the visible or near-infrared spectrum. A layer of limescale, soap residue, or dust on the cover glass (or plastic) reduces sensitivity and range. Solution: gently wipe the dryer's optics with a damp cloth (no abrasive). For dryers in hard water areas (e.g., Bratislava, Piešťany, Galanta – hardness values 15–25 °dH), monthly cleaning with a microfiber cloth dampened with water and vinegar in a 1:3 ratio is sufficient.
Interference from ambient light or other IR sources
Direct sunlight hitting the sensor can cause false triggering, as sunlight contains a rich IR component. Similarly, halogen lamps or older fluorescent lamps with a faulty ballast can interfere. Solution: move or rotate the dryer so that the sensor does not directly face the light source or window.
Failure of IR transmitter or receiver
If cleaning does not help, electronic diagnostics come into play. You can check the IR LED transmitter with a smartphone – most smartphone cameras (especially the front camera without an IR filter) can see IR radiation. Point the camera at the IR transmitter and watch whether the LED lights up when you bring your hand close to the sensing zone. If not, the transmitter is faulty. If it does, the problem is on the receiving side or the control board.
Sensitivity setting
Some models – for example, HAKL SR AB19 – allow adjusting the sensor's sensitivity or range via a trimmer (a small blue potentiometer on the board) or DIP switches. Check the manual; sometimes simply turning the trimmer slightly can solve the problem without replacing parts.
5. Dryer overheats and shuts off automatically
Thermal protection is an intentional safety feature. If it activates repeatedly, it is not a fault in the protection – it is a sign that something else is not working properly.
Clogged air filter or grid
Restricted airflow is the most common cause of overheating. Air cannot carry away the heat from the heating element. Check the inlet and outlet grids – they may be covered with dust or blocked by foreign objects. In devices with a filter mesh (less common, but existent), clean or replace the filter.
Thermostat failure (stuck in "ON" position)
If the thermostat fails in the opposite way – permanently connecting the element without regulation – the temperature rises until the thermal fuse activates. Then the device behaves again as "only blowing cold air". If this cycle repeats, the thermostat is faulty and must be replaced.
Too high ambient temperature
A dryer installed directly above a radiator or in a closed cabinet without ventilation may have an ambient temperature too high for trouble-free operation. Most manufacturers specify a maximum ambient temperature of 40 °C. If the room is warmer (e.g., sauna, laundry room), the device must be moved or better ventilation of the space must be ensured.
6. Unusual noise, vibrations and buzzing

Loose mounting or cover resonance
Check all screws on the cover – after years of operation with vibrations, they can become loose. The cover then resonates with the fan speed. Tighten the screws, or place rubber anti-vibration pads under the mounting points. These can be found in any decent electronics store or hobby market.
Foreign object in the fan
Hair clips, matches, small coins – this is the reality of public restrooms. A foreign object caught in the fan blades produces a characteristic tapping, fluttering or grinding sound. The solution is simple: turn off the dryer, unscrew the cover, remove the object, and check whether the blades are damaged.
Worn fan with imbalance
When the blades become unevenly dirty or when one blade cracks or breaks off, the fan becomes unbalanced. This is manifested by a strong vibration of the entire dryer body and a rattling of the wall on which it is mounted. Replacing or balancing the original blades is not realistic in regular service – the fan is replaced as a whole unit.
Electromagnetic buzzing
Low buzzing at a frequency of 50 Hz or 100 Hz is typical for a relay with vibration, a transformer or a switching power supply. If this buzzing increases or appears unexpectedly, it may be a problem with the capacitor in the power supply. Repair requires electronic knowledge.
7. Dryer runs continuously and does not turn off
An automatic dryer should turn off after hands are removed (or after the set timer, usually 30 – 90 seconds). If it runs continuously, it consumes several times more electricity and its components will wear out faster.
Blocked or stuck push-button switch
In manual models, the button may be mechanically stuck in the pressed position – due to impact, damage, or the presence of a foreign object. A visual inspection and a gentle mechanical intervention usually help.
Faulty IR sensor (permanently active)
If the IR receiver constantly detects "hand presence", the device runs continuously. The cause may be a damaged transistor, capacitor or control chip. A flash of direct light (camera flash, sunlight) can temporarily blind the receiver and cause this condition. Try disconnecting the device from power for 10 seconds – the electronics will reset. If the problem persists, it is a hardware fault in the sensing circuit.
Welded relay contacts
A relay switching the heating element or motor may have burned contacts welded in the "on" position. In practice, this means the device runs even after the sensor is disconnected. A relay is a component costing a few euros – replacement is simple for anyone with basic electronic experience.
8. Dryer does not work reliably with wet hands – too short drying time
This is not a classic fault, but the most common source of dissatisfaction – the device was poorly selected for the type of operation. If hands are not dry after 10 – 15 seconds, either the dryer has insufficient power or it is not properly set. 9. Installation-related faults

- Insufficient cross-section of the supply cable: For a device with a power of 2 100 W at 230 V, a current of approximately 9.1 A flows. The cable must be at least 1.5 mm² Cu, ideally 2.5 mm². A thinner cable overheats, which shortens the life of the insulation and can cause a fire.
- Missing residual current device: In a bathroom, an RCD with 30 mA sensitivity is mandatory. Without it, there is a risk of electric shock in the event of insulation failure.
- Incorrect installation height: Too low → children hug the heater; too high → the air jet misses the hands. The recommended height of the air outlet is 1.0 – 1.2 m from the floor.
- Installation in soft substrate: A dryer mounted on plasterboard without anchoring into a load-bearing wall or without using molly anchors will eventually loosen and "sway", which can damage the electrical connection.
10. Preventive maintenance: how to prevent faults

- Monthly: Wipe the outer cover including the sensor optics. Check whether anything is stuck in the intake grid.
- Quarterly: Unscrew the cover (if the manual allows) and clean the fan blades, the area around the heating element and the outlets with compressed air. Check whether the electrical connections are tight.
- Annually: A full inspection including resistance measurements and checking the thermal fuse and thermostat with a multimeter. Keep records of maintenance – they are valuable in the case of a warranty claim or insurance incident.
- As needed: In environments with hard water, treat the outlet grid and plastic parts with a limescale remover (diluted vinegar or citric acid).

11. When to call a service and when replacement is more cost-effective than repair
The rule in service practice is relatively simple: if the repair costs exceed 50 – 60 % of the price of a new device of the same category, replacement is a more rational choice. For orientation:
- Replacement of internal fuse or thermal fuse: cheap, usually up to 10 EUR including labor – always repair.
- Replacement of IR sensor module: 15 – 40 EUR – repair for newer devices, consider for old ones (8+ years).
- Replacement of motor block: 30 – 80 EUR – depends on age and availability of spare parts.
- Replacement of control board: 40 – 120 EUR – for a cheap hand dryer (under 80 EUR), replacement of the device is more cost-effective.
- Burnt motor winding + faulty board + blown fuse at once: device replacement is always recommended.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Hand dryer starts automatically without hands present. What to do?
The most common cause is interference with the IR sensor from ambient light (direct sunlight, halogen lamps) or dirt on the optics. Start by cleaning the sensor cover with a damp cloth. If the problem persists, check the installation direction of the device relative to light sources. If that also does not help, it is a hardware fault in the sensor circuit – consult a service or consider replacing the sensor module.
After replacing the thermal fuse, the device overheats again and the fuse blows again. Why?
The thermal fuse is only the last line of defense – it indicates that something else is not working properly. The most common cause of overheating is a clogged intake or exhaust grid (restricted air flow), a faulty thermostat (constantly connecting the heating element), or a damaged fan (reduced air flow). Always identify and eliminate the cause of overheating before replacing the fuse.
Hand dryer blows air but does not heat at all. Technical inspection of the fuse showed it is in good condition. What next?
If the thermal fuse is functional, check the thermostat (using a multimeter – it should have minimal resistance at room temperature) and the heating element itself (PTC element or resistance wire). If the PTC element is broken, the measured resistance will be infinite instead of the typical 25 – 40 Ω. In the case of thermal damage to the PTC element, replacement is necessary. Hand dryer emits an unpleasant smell during operation. Is it dangerous?
It depends on the nature of the smell. A slight smell of dust after a long break is normal – the dust burns off on the heating element. A smell of burnt rubber or plastic is a warning sign – immediately turn off the device, disconnect it from the power supply, and have it inspected by a service. This smell may indicate smoldering insulation, burnt contacts, or a burnt capacitor.
How long does a hand dryer last under normal operation?
With a quality device and regular maintenance, expect a service life of 8 – 15 years. Devices in heavily used environments (restaurants, airports) may reach the limit sooner – especially the motor and heating element have a limited number of cycles. Regular maintenance (cleaning, checking electrical connections) can extend the lifespan by 30 – 50 %.
Can I repair a hand dryer myself or must I always call an electrician?
Certain tasks are possible without professional qualifications: cleaning, replacing a fuse after disconnecting from power, visual inspection of the cable. Any work on the electrical installation (wiring, replacing terminal blocks, working with voltage) must be performed by a person with the appropriate electrical qualification according to Ordinance No. 508/2009 Coll.
