Installing a hand dryer may seem like a trivial task at first glance – a few screws into the wall, a plug into the socket and that's it. Reality is often different. Over the years we have been working in the field of heating and bathroom technology, we have encountered dozens of incorrectly installed hand dryers – from units mounted at the wrong height, overloaded electrical circuits, to devices installed without any regard for hygiene standards. Each of these problems has real consequences: increased risk of injury, problems with inspection, premature failures or simply a hand dryer that does not perform its function because the customer cannot use it comfortably.
This article therefore discusses the installation of hand dryers in a truly comprehensive way – from choosing the right location through electrical requirements, methods of mounting on different types of walls to the final check and handover of the device into operation. Whether you are installing a dryer in a company bathroom, a public access facility or a larger administrative building, you will find everything you need to know here.
Why correct installation is critically important
A hand dryer is not just an aesthetic addition to the bathroom. It is an electrical device with a power typically from 1,200 W to 2,500 W, which operates in an environment with increased humidity. This alone imposes strict requirements on the installation. If we look at what can go wrong with incorrect installation, we get a rather diverse list:
- Safety risks – an unsuitable electrical circuit, missing grounding or insufficient protection against humidity can lead to electric shocks.
- Mechanical failure – underestimating the load capacity of the used anchors and screws leads to the device literally falling off the wall, which is not uncommon in spaces with visitors.
- Hygienic problems – incorrect height or placement can actually reduce the number of people who use the dryer at all, thus missing the purpose of the entire investment.
- Problems with inspection and insurance – in the case of damage caused by incorrectly installed electrical equipment, the insurance company may refuse to pay out.
- Premature wear – vibrations of insufficiently secured equipment accelerate mechanical wear of internal components.

Electrical requirements: the foundation that cannot be bypassed
Before you pick up the drill, you must have clarity about the electrical conditions of the installation. This is an area where amateur installation most often runs into problems.
Protection zones and degree of protection (IP)
Bathrooms and spaces with sinks are divided into protection zones (zones) from an electrical engineering point of view. The standard STN 33 2000-7-701, which follows the European EN 60364-7-701, defines three basic zones:
- Zone 0 – directly in the bath or shower; hand dryers are never installed here.
- Zone 1 – up to 2.25 m above the bath/shower or up to 60 cm from the edge of the sink; only devices with a minimum of IPX4 protection are allowed, i.e. resistance to splashing water.
- Zone 2 – 60 cm to 120 cm from the edge of the sink; the same requirement for IPX4.
- Outside zones – more than 120 cm from the sink and bath/shower; standard rules for electrical installation apply here.
Most commercial hand dryers intended for public spaces have a protection rating of IP23 to IP44. For example, HAKL SR2100 or HAKL SR AB19 are designed for installation in interior areas near the sink, where humidity plays a real role. Always read the technical specifications of the specific model and verify in which zone the installer is allowed to install it.
Protective conductor and grounding
Hand dryers of protection class I (the most common case) must be connected to the protective (grounding) conductor – i.e. they must be properly grounded. Without grounding, the entire device is a potential source of fatal injury in the event of insulation failure. The socket to which the dryer is connected must always be three-wire (phase + neutral + protective conductor PE). If there are old two-wire installations without PE in the building, it is the electrician's responsibility to correct this situation before installing the dryer.
Protection and wiring sizing
Hand dryers with a power of 2,000–2,500 W operate at a current of 9–11 A at 230 V. For power supply, a conductor with a minimum cross-section of 2.5 mm² (Cu) must be used, protected by a circuit breaker of at least 16 A. If there are other devices on the same circuit (pump, fan, WC device), calculate the corresponding load sum and dimension the entire circuit accordingly. In practice, we recommend a separate protected circuit for hand dryers with medium and higher power – this eliminates the risk of the circuit breaker tripping at an inconvenient time and extends the life of the installation.

Residual Current Device (RCD)
In bathroom areas, it is mandatory by law (or standard) to protect with a residual current device with a rated residual current of max. 30 mA. If your distribution board does not have such a device for the respective circuit, it is a problem that must be resolved by a qualified electrician before the dryer is put into operation. Do not put the device into operation without a 30 mA RCD.
Choosing the right location: ergonomics, space and practical constraints
We have often seen dryers installed in such a way that customers simply do not use them – too high, hidden behind doors, or placed so that the air stream is directed directly at the mirror or paper towels. Choosing the right location is just as important as the electrical aspect.
Recommended installation height
The standard installation height of the center of the hand dryer from the floor is 1,100 to 1,200 mm. For barrier-free access areas (public buildings, where it is required by decree No. 532/2002 Coll.), the maximum height of control elements and air outlet is 900 mm from the floor. In practice, this means that if you install a dryer in a barrier-free bathroom or in a public WC accessible to wheelchair users, the dryer must be lower than is customary in standard areas.
Horizontal position and air outlet direction
The dryer should be mounted as close as possible to the sink so that people do not have to cover a large distance with wet hands. At the same time, it must be sufficiently far from paper towels, toilet paper and taps – hot air dries and degrades these items. The minimum horizontal distance from the water outlet (tap, faucet) should be at least 50 cm. From paper dispensers, we recommend a distance of at least 80 cm.
Never direct the air outlet directly at the mirror – condensation of warm air on the cold surface of the mirror blurs and dirties it. If the space layout does not allow anything else, choose a dryer with an adjustable nozzle or deflector.
Space in front of the dryer
For comfortable hand drying, there must be free space in front of the device of at least 60 cm in depth and 50 cm in width. A dryer installed directly behind a corner opening of the door will be permanently blocked – in practice, customers simply stop using it.
Types of walls and corresponding mounting methods
This is a chapter that is underestimated by almost everyone during installation. Each type of wall has different load-bearing properties and requires a different type of anchor or fastening element.
Brick wall (solid brick, concrete, aerated concrete)
This is the simplest case. For solid brick and concrete, a standard plastic anchor system is sufficient: an anchor of diameter 8 mm (e.g. type S8 or SX8) with a galvanized screw M5–M6 x 50 mm is more than sufficient for standard dryers with a weight up to 5 kg. For dryers over 5 kg (larger commercial models with metal body), use a diameter of 10 mm and screws M6 × 60 mm.
With aerated concrete (Ytong), the situation is not so simple. Aerated concrete is brittle and standard anchors can easily "pop out" of it. Use special anchors for light materials – for example, nylon anchors with an expanding cage (so-called KD type or Molly bolt) or chemical anchors. For heavier devices in aerated concrete walls, chemical anchors are clearly the more reliable option.
Gypsum board (partitions, built-in walls)
Gypsum board is problematic from the perspective of installing hand dryers. The board itself without a load-bearing profile behind it cannot reliably support the standard load of a dryer over a long period. You have three options:
- Mounting into a metal profile – if you know exactly where the CW/UW profiles of the partition run, you can fasten directly into them using self-tapping screws for metal. The profile provides much better load-bearing capacity than the board itself.
- Blanks for hollow walls – so-called Molly anchors or blind rivets with an expanding principle. They work by spreading behind the board and increasing the contact area. The load-bearing capacity of one anchor is typically 15–25 kg in tension (depending on the manufacturer and board thickness) – with two anchor points, this is more than sufficient for most dryers.
- Wooden insert – the most reliable solution for gypsum board partitions, if the installation is planned in advance. Before closing the partition, insert a board of thickness 18–22 mm (e.g. multiplex) between the profiles, into which standard screws can easily bite.
Tiles and tiled surface
Drilling into tiles is a common reality in bathrooms. Always use a diamond or carbide drill bit for ceramic – a standard metal drill bit will simply crack or break the tile. Procedure: start slowly without hammering (turn off the hammering function on the drill), first drill through the glaze and then drill into the substrate, where you can engage the hammering function (if it is concrete or masonry). Always place an anchor corresponding to the substrate material behind the tile, not the tile itself – the tile does not provide load-bearing capacity, it only transmits it.
Step-by-step installation procedure
Step 1: Measure and mark the position
Start by marking the center of the future position of the hand dryer on the wall with a pencil. Measure the height according to the recommendations (1,100–1,200 mm for standard, or lower for barrier-free). Place the mounting bracket or the back cover of the device directly against the wall (most manufacturers provide a template or allow the bracket to be nailed directly) and through the screw holes mark the exact drilling points. Check with a spirit level to ensure the line is horizontal.
Step 2: Check what is in the wall
Before you start drilling, use a cable detector (also known as a multiscanner). In a bathroom, the walls are full of things – electrical wiring, water pipes, waste pipes. Damaging electrical cables is unpleasant; damaging pressurized water pipes is a catastrophe. Cable detectors are available at reasonable prices in any larger hardware store. If not available, at least study the layout of the installations if it exists.
Step 3: Drill the holes and insert the anchors
The diameter of the drill bit must match the anchor. The depth of the hole should be 5–10 mm greater than the length of the anchor to ensure that the anchor expands properly when the screw is tightened. After drilling, clean the hole of dust – gently blow it out or vacuum it. An anchor placed in a dusty hole holds significantly worse. After inserting the anchor, tap it lightly (with a hammer) until it is flush with the surface of the wall.
Step 4: Mount the mounting bracket or back cover
Most hand dryers are installed in two phases: first, the mounting bracket or back cover (depending on the device construction) is screwed to the wall, then the body of the dryer is slid or attached to it. The reason is practical – you work with a smaller and lighter part, precisely align the position, and bring the electrical wiring to the correct place. Check with a spirit level! Even a small deviation from the horizontal position will be visually noticeable and may affect the drainage of condensation inside the device.
Tighten the screws gradually – first, all screws are loosely tightened (not fully tightened), then tightened alternately. This prevents the bracket from shifting out of the wall on one side when tightening one screw. The final tightening force should be sufficient, but don't overdo it – plastic brackets can crack under excessive torque from a wrench.
Step 5: Electrical connection
We would like to emphasize: if the dryer is not equipped with a standard plug and the cable must be connected to a fixed installation (e.g., to a socket box), the connection must be performed by a qualified person – an electrician with the appropriate qualification. Connecting to a fixed installation without proper qualifications is not only dangerous but also illegal and will cause problems during inspection or insurance.
If the dryer uses a standard Schuko plug (CEE 7/4 or CEE 7/7), simply plug it into an earthed socket. The socket must be protected by a 30 mA RCD (see above). Route the cable so that it does not come into contact with hot surfaces or pass through places where it could be mechanically damaged.
Step 6: Mounting the dryer body and test operation
Mount the body of the dryer according to the manufacturer's instructions – typically, you tilt it, hook or slide it onto the bracket and click or secure it with a safety screw (locking). This safety screw is crucial in public spaces – without it, the dryer can be easily lifted and stolen. Make sure it is tightened, but also mark it so you can quickly unscrew it during service.
Before starting, make sure there is no flammable material around the dryer (especially near the exhaust). Turn it on and let it run for at least 2–3 minutes. Observe whether the device is not pressing, has not fallen into an uneven position, nothing is vibrating excessively, and the air stream is directed correctly. Also check that the automatic sensor activates and deactivates properly.
Requirements for public spaces and businesses
If you are installing a hand dryer in a business (restaurant, hotel, hospital, school, shopping center), additional requirements beyond standard installation come into play.
Electrical installation inspection
Devices in non-residential spaces are subject to regular electrical inspections according to STN 33 1500. A new installation (including a dryer connected to a fixed installation) must be inspected by a maintenance technician before being put into operation, who will issue an inspection report. Without this report, your business may be closed during inspections by the health station or fire authorities.
Height and accessibility for people with disabilities
As mentioned, Government Regulation No. 532/2002 Coll. on general technical requirements for construction sets a maximum reach height of 900 mm for devices that must be accessible to users with mobility limitations. In the renovation of public restrooms, this is a crucial requirement. In practice, this means that in many public restrooms you will install the dryer significantly lower than you might intuitively expect – the bottom edge of the device can be at the level of only 700–750 mm from the floor.

Distance from the sink and hygiene requirements
Hygiene in a business requires that the dryer be placed so that people can dry their hands without having to move their wet hands significantly in the space (which contributes to surface contamination). At the same time, the dryer must not be so close that the air exhaust flows directly onto the washing area. The optimal distance from the sink: 40–80 cm horizontally.
Common mistakes in practice and how to avoid them
Over the years of contract work, the same mistakes keep repeating. Here is an overview of the most common ones:
- Underestimating the weight of the device – commercial stainless steel hand dryers can weigh up to 6–8 kg. On weak toggle anchors in drywall, they may hold for a few months before starting to "pop out."
- Forgetting to protect the air outlet – some models can be tilted with the exhaust pointing downward, which customers do when the air blows in their face. If the device's mechanics do not allow this, the problem lies in the wrong model selection or installation height.
- Electrical circuit without RCD – this is the most common electrical error. An inspection technician will detect it immediately.
- Installation in an unsuitable zone – a dryer with IP20 protection mounted 50 cm from a shower is a violation of the standard, even though it may appear to work fine for years.
- Installation too high – especially in areas where children are present. In schools and kindergartens, consider the height of children.
- Loose securing screw – in areas with vandals, this is an invitation for the device to be stolen.
- Installation without checking the plug-in – the dryer is installed, but no one checks if the electrical plug is even inserted. It sounds absurd, but it happens.
Differences in the installation of various types of hand dryers
Not all hand dryers are installed the same way. Basic types have specific requirements:
Classic warm air dryers (vertical downward exhaust)
This is the most common type – the dryer is mounted on the wall and hands are placed under the exhaust from below. Installation is straightforward: a bracket on the wall, the body of the device. An example is HAKL SR2100, a compact stainless steel dryer with a power of 2,100 W, which thanks to a robust bracket, handles well even on drywall partitions, provided suitable anchors are used.
Automatic dryers with sensor
These devices must be placed so that the sensor (infrared or microwave) is not disturbed by surrounding movements (people passing by, doors). Some sensors have adjustable range and angle – adjust them before final mounting. HAKL SR AB19 is an example of a device with automatic activation, where correct sensor setup directly affects how effectively the device works.
Jet (high-velocity) dryers
These dryers require that the space in front of the device is free and sufficiently deep – the user inserts their hands into the body of the device and pulls them up vertically. The minimum free space in front of the device is 80–100 cm. The installation height is also more critical: the center of the opening should be approximately at waist height (700–850 mm). Jet dryers are heavier (sometimes over 10 kg) and their installation on drywall cannot be done without wooden backing.
What to do after installation: handing over the device and documentation
If you install a dryer in a commercial establishment, handing over the device should include:
- Written handover with a description of the device, installation date, and contact of the service technician.
- Electrical installation inspection report (obligation of the electrician).
- User manual and cleaning instructions handed over to the facility staff.
- Information about recommended service intervals (usually once a year in commercial operation).

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Can I install a hand dryer myself, or do I need an electrician?
It depends on the type of connection. If the dryer has a standard Schuko plug, connecting it to a properly fused and grounded socket can be done by anyone. However, if it involves a fixed connection to the electrical installation (terminal block, cable without plug), the work must be performed by an electrician with the appropriate authorization under Act No. 251/2012 Coll. on energy and related regulations. Drilling and mechanical mounting of the bracket can be done by a skilled DIYer, but don't underestimate electricity – especially in a bathroom.
How long does a standard hand dryer installation take?
A routine installation of one hand dryer on a masonry wall (without drywall, without complicated wiring) takes an experienced installer 30–60 minutes, including measuring, drilling, mounting, and test operation. If new electrical installation, socket installation, or work with drywall is added, expect 2–4 hours, not including the electrician's work.
Which wall is the hardest to mount a hand dryer on?
Unquestionably on aerated concrete (Ytong) and thin drywall without wooden backing. Aerated concrete is brittle and standard anchors fall out under greater load. Drywall by itself has very limited load capacity. Solutions are either chemical anchors (for aerated concrete) or deep Molly anchors with a large washer area (for drywall). For larger and heavier dryers in drywall, we always recommend installing wooden backing before closing the partition.
Can I install a hand dryer in a shower area or directly next to a bathtub?
No. No electrical device of this type is allowed directly in the bathtub or shower (zone 0). In zone 1 (up to 60 cm from the edge of the bathtub/shower or up to 2.25 m above them), only devices with at least IPX4 protection are allowed. Most hand dryers on the market have IP23 or IP44, so technically they meet the condition for zone 1, but practically a hand dryer does not belong in a shower area – it belongs next to the sink. In any case of doubt, consult an inspection electrician.
How many mounting points (screws) do I need for a reliable hand dryer installation?
Most hand dryers are mounted on 2–4 mounting points. Two points are standard for compact devices up to 4 kg. For larger commercial dryers (5 kg and more), four points with sufficient spacing are much more reliable. Never mount the device on fewer points than specified by the manufacturer – you not only reduce the holding strength, but also the even distribution of load on the wall.
Is an inspection mandatory for hand dryer installation?
If it's a residential space and you plug the dryer into an existing socket, the inspection is not mandatory, but recommended. If it's a non-residential space (shops, offices, public restrooms) or if a fixed electrical connection is made, the inspection is mandatory. The result is an inspection report, which the operator should archive and present during inspections. Periodic inspections in commercial spaces are done every 3–5 years, depending on the nature of the operation.
