Common faults of the electric boiler Daline PTE and how to resolve them

The electric boiler series Buderus Dakon Daline PTE belongs to reliable and technically well-thought-out devices that, when properly installed and regularly maintained, serve for many years without major problems. Nevertheless, as with any technology, faults may appear over time that can make the heating season unpleasant. Some are minor and can be resolved by a layperson, while others require professional intervention. In this article, we discuss the most common faults of Daline PTE boilers in the 4 kW to 18 kW range, their causes, diagnostics, and – where it is safe to do so – also the steps to resolve them yourself.

How the Daline PTE boiler is built – the basis for understanding faults

Before moving on to specific faults, it is useful to understand the basic architecture of the boiler. Daline PTE is an electronically controlled electric boiler with hot water heating elements (resistance rods), a circulation pump, an expansion tank, a safety valve, pressure and temperature sensing, and control electronics. Some versions also include an input for an external thermostat or an equithermal regulator.

Each of these components can be a source of a fault. Faults do not always mean physical damage – very often it is a matter of incorrect settings, low pressure in the system, a clogged filter, or a problem in the electrical supply. That is why we have grouped the individual faults according to the symptom, not according to the cause.

Boiler does not start – it does not react at all or does not heat

This is the most common complaint we encounter with Daline PTE boilers. There can be several causes, which need to be ruled out one by one.

No power supply or there is a problem in the electrical system

Daline PTE requires single-phase (230 V, models 4 and 6 kW) or three-phase power supply (400 V, models 8, 14 and 18 kW), depending on the power. First, check the following:

  • whether the circuit breaker in the distribution board is switched on – after the first start-up after the holidays or after a power outage, it can happen that the circuit breaker has tripped and no one noticed it
  • whether the residual current device (RCD) has not tripped – common especially in the case of humidity or after flooding the technical room
  • for three-phase models, check the presence of all three phases – in the case of a phase failure, the boiler will either not start at all or will start with a fault message
  • check the supply cable and terminal block inside the boiler – loose terminals are surprisingly common in older installations

If you have a Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 18 kW or model 14 kW, please remember that these require a three-phase power supply with a minimum of 3×20 A fusing – insufficient fusing will cause the circuit breaker to trip repeatedly.

Set temperature is lower than the temperature in the system

Apparent "fault" – the boiler is powered, the display is lit, but it does not heat. Check the set desired temperature on the panel. If it is set, for example, to 50 °C and the current temperature of the water in the system is 52 °C (after morning solar heating or residual heat), the boiler simply will not start heating, because the system does not need to be reheated. It is enough to increase the set temperature or wait until the system cools down.

Blocking by an external thermostat or timer switch

If the boiler is connected to external control (room thermostat, equithermal unit or timer switch for night tariff), the fault may be in these devices – the thermostat is set to the minimum value, the timer switch is set to an off period, or the battery is faulty. Boiler displays an error code – overview of the most common codes

Daline PTE has an error message system on the display. The manufacturer describes codes E1 to E9 and their variations in the manual. Here are the most common ones from customer practice:

Boiler reset after a fault

Most error codes can be reset by pressing and holding the Reset button (or a combination of buttons depending on the boiler generation – see the manual). If the code reappears within 10 minutes after the reset, the cause has not been eliminated. Never repeat the reset mechanically without first determining the cause – ignoring fault E1 (overheating) can damage the heating rods.

Low pressure in the system – E2 and its causes

Error codes related to low pressure are among the most common. The correct operating pressure in a cold system should be between 1.0 and 1.5 bar, and during operation (hot system) between 1.5 and 2.0 bar. Below 0.5 bar, the boiler automatically blocks heating to prevent damage to the heating rods.

Causes of pressure drop

  • Leaking water: Check all radiator valves, pipe connections, thermostatic heads, safety valve, and weld points. Even a small, seemingly invisible leak (e.g., dripping from the safety valve into the drain pipe) can reduce pressure by 0.5 bar within a week.
  • Flat or undersized expansion tank: The internal expansion tank in the boiler typically has a volume of 8–12 liters (depending on the model). If the system has a large water volume (e.g., floor heating in a family house), this tank is insufficient, and an external expansion tank must be added. The pre-charge pressure in the air chamber of the tank should be approximately 0.7–0.8 bar (cold system with 1.0 bar pressure).
  • Draining without refilling water: After draining air from radiators, the system pressure always slightly drops. Do not forget to refill water via the filling valve.

How to refill water into the Daline PTE system

The boiler has a filling valve (bypass or external valve for connecting to the water supply). Slowly open the valve and monitor the pressure gauge on the boiler panel until the pressure reaches 1.2–1.5 bar. If the gauge is not in your direct line of sight, the system usually displays the current pressure on the display (depending on the version). After refilling, reset the boiler. If the pressure drops again within 24 hours, look for a leak.

Boiler heats, but radiators are cold – circulation problem

A situation where the boiler shows the correct water temperature (e.g., 65 °C), but the radiators are cold or only slightly warm, indicates a circulation issue, not a heating problem itself.

Blocked or jammed circulation pump

The pump in Daline PTE boilers is usually running continuously (or with breaks depending on the settings). If the boiler has been unused for a long time (summer months), the pump rotor may jam due to deposits. A sign is a buzzing sound from the motor without water movement, or silence and error code E5. Procedure:

  • Disconnect the boiler from the power supply.
  • Locate the service bleed screw on the pump (usually on the side of the pump, a flat screw).
  • Loosen it slightly by half a turn – some water will drain, which is normal.
  • Gently turn the rotor shaft with a flat screwdriver (a small slot at the end of the shaft).
  • Re-tighten the screw, reconnect the boiler, and check if circulation has resumed.

Closed or partially closed shut-off valve

Sometimes the cause is trivial – someone closed the shut-off valve on the boiler's inlet or outlet and forgot to open it. Check both valves. If installed according to the correct procedure (see Installation and wiring of the Daline PTE electric boiler), the valves should normally be open.

System bleeding

Air in the system is a "classic" issue. Radiators at the top gurgle, the bottom is warm, the top is cold. Bleed all radiators starting from the lowest to the highest. With floor heating, bleeding is more complicated, and we recommend consulting a specialist.

Clogged filter/screen

A tilted filter (a ball filter with a screen) should be installed on the return pipe of the boiler. After years of operation, this screen becomes clogged with magnetite and sludge, significantly restricting flow. Clean the filter once a year. If the filter is missing, magnetite accumulates directly in the pump and heating element – which is a more expensive repair.

Boiler overheating and shutdown by the safety thermostat

The boiler has a dual protection against overheating – a controllable thermostat and a fixed safety thermostat (usually set at 95 °C). When the safety thermostat is activated, the boiler generates an error code (E1 or similar) and is blocked until a manual reset is performed after it has cooled down.

Why does the boiler overheat?

  • Non-functional circulation pump – hot water does not reach the radiators, and heat quickly accumulates in the boiler body. This is the most dangerous scenario – in the event of a pump failure, overheating and damage to the heating rods or seals can occur even before the safety thermostat is activated.
  • Closed loop or too small a system – an 8 kW boiler connected to a small system without an accumulator tank and without proper regulation can cyclically overheat. The solution is to add a tank or adjust the regulation settings.
  • Clogged heat exchanger or heating rods covered with limescale – hard water gradually deposits calcium on the heating rods, which act as thermal insulators: water is not heated efficiently, and the rods overheat locally. The solution is chemical descaling or replacement of the rods.

Heating rods – faults, wear and replacement

Heating resistance rods are consumables with limited service life. A well-operated boiler (8 months/year) will allow a quality rod to last 7–12 years. Shortened service life occurs with hard water without treatment, overheating or water corrosion (low pH).

Signs of heating rod failure

  • The boiler draws electricity (an ammeter on the circuit breaker or in the distribution board indicates consumption), but does not heat the water to the set temperature even after a long time (more than 2 hours for small systems, 4+ hours for large ones)
  • The circuit breaker or residual current device trips regularly – indicates a short circuit in the heating rod or current leakage to water (insulation fault of the rod)
  • The boiler RCD trips immediately after switching on – typical sign of insulation failure in the heating rod
  • One of the three elements is not working (in three-phase boilers, individual rods can be identified by measuring resistance)

Measuring the heating rod

An experienced electrician or service technician will measure the resistance of each rod with a multimeter (after disconnecting from the network and draining or loosening the terminal block). For a standard 2 kW / 230 V rod, the resistance is approximately 26 Ω. Zero resistance = short circuit, infinite resistance = break = non-functional rod. Insulation resistance of the rod to ground is also measured (with a megohmmeter) – it should be at least 1 MΩ, ideally over 10 MΩ.

Replacing the heating rod – DIY versus service

Replacing the rod is not technically very demanding, but it requires draining part of the system, electrical disconnection and proper sealing of the thread (for the correct tightening torque and type of sealing, see the service manual for the specific model). We recommend entrusting the replacement to a service technician if you do not have experience with pressure systems and electrical work. Do not forget that work on the electrical part is subject to legislative requirements (Decree No. 508/2009 Coll. in the SR).

Noisy operation – cracking, bubbling, hissing

Acoustic manifestations of the boiler reveal a lot about the condition of the system.

Cracking and tapping

Typically caused by limescale on the heating rods. When heated, the lime expands and cracks. The solution is chemical descaling of the system (inhibitor, citric acid or specialized preparations) or replacement of the rods. In areas with water hardness above 30 °dH, we recommend considering the installation of a water softener or at least a magnetic water conditioner.

Bubbling and humming

Air in the system. Bleed the system according to the procedure mentioned above. If the problem persists, the cause may be a leaky connection through which air enters the system (rare, but possible in old installations).

Quiet pump noise, intermittent loud buzzing

The pump buzzes – this may be cavitation (the pump is operating without sufficient flow, e.g. due to a clogged filter or closed valve), or the pump bearing is beginning to fail. Cavitation damages the pump over time – remove the cause as soon as possible.

Control and thermostat issues

Modern Daline PTE boilers allow quite sophisticated control. Problems in this area are common, but they usually do not cause real damage to the boiler – rather, they cause discomfort or unnecessary electricity consumption.

The boiler heats continuously and does not stop

Possible causes: the set temperature is too high (e.g. 85 °C at an outside temperature of –5 °C and with a small system), faulty control thermostat, broken loop of the external thermostat (the boiler interprets the broken contact as "heat required"). Check the settings and, if necessary, disconnect the external thermostat and test the boiler on internal control.

The boiler turns on and off cyclically (so-called short cycling)

Short cycling (short cycling) occurs when the boiler reaches the set temperature almost immediately, turns off, quickly cools down and turns on again. Causes: too small a system without a storage tank, too powerful a boiler for the given system or incorrectly set regulator hysteresis. This phenomenon shortens the life of heating rods, circuit breakers and electronics. Solution: lower the set temperature, add a storage tank or adjust the control (wider hysteresis). Circulation pump faults – in detail

The pump is the second most frequently serviced component after the heating rods. Daline PTE uses wet-running circulation pumps (the rotor rotates directly in water), which is an elegant solution without seals, but sensitive to water quality and long shutdowns.

Typical service life and preventive care

The pump should last 10–15 years with proper operation. During the summer shutdown, we recommend switching on the boiler for a short time at least once a month in the protective cycle mode (if supported by the boiler – some versions of Daline PTE have a "pump kick" or "anti-seize" function), so that the pump rotates and does not seize.

Pump replacement

Pumps in Daline PTE boilers are mostly standardized in diameter (Rp 1" or Rp 1¼" depending on the power). Replacing them with a compatible type (e.g. Grundfos, Wilo or Laing) can be done by a service technician in 1–2 hours, including draining and refilling the system.

Electrical faults – circuit breaker, RCD, terminal block

Electrical faults require increased caution. Never work on the electrical part of the boiler under voltage. Always disconnect the boiler with the circuit breaker in the distribution board before any inspection of electrical connections.

Circuit breaker tripping repeatedly

If the circuit breaker trips with every start-up or during operation:

  • Check the circuit breaker sizing – for Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 8 kW a 3×16 A circuit breaker (three-phase) is required, for model 4 kW a single-phase 1×25 A circuit breaker is required.
  • Thermal protection (bimetallic circuit breaker) may trip at higher ambient temperatures in the distribution board – if the distribution board is in a warm room, reduce the circuit breaker rating or replace it with characteristic C instead of B.
  • If the RCD (residual current device at 30 mA) trips, it is almost certainly an insulation fault in one of the heating elements.

Loose terminals and burn marks on the terminal block

After several years of operation, especially if the boiler was installed with insufficiently tightened terminals, local overheating of the terminal block may occur. Symptoms: the boiler delivers less power than it should, the circuit breaker trips for thermal reasons, and when opening the terminal block cover, darkened or burned terminals can be seen. Such a terminal block must be replaced immediately and the tightening must be ensured according to the torque specified in the manual (typically 1.5–2.5 Nm for 2.5–6 mm² conductors).

Display or control board failure

The control electronics of Daline PTE boilers are generally reliable, but in a humid or dusty environment (technical rooms without dehumidification), corrosion can cause failure sooner. Signs of control board failure:

  • The display is black or shows nonsensical characters despite power supply
  • The boiler does not respond to buttons
  • The boiler randomly turns on and off without command
  • Error codes related to communication (E4 and similar)

Resetting the control board (disconnecting from power for 60 seconds and turning it back on) may help with temporary problems caused by overvoltage or electrostatic discharges. A permanent board failure requires replacement – entrust this repair to a service organization, as the board must be properly configured and initialized.

Preventive maintenance – how to avoid most failures

Experience from customer practice shows that boilers with regular annual maintenance statistically have fewer failures and a longer lifespan.   • Every 3 months: Visual pressure check on the manometer, check for leaks from the safety valve or other connections.
  • Once a year (before the heating season): Bleeding the system, cleaning the filter screen, checking the pre-charge pressure of the expansion tank, checking seals and the terminal block.
  • Every 2–3 years: Professional inspection of electrical connections, insulation resistance measurement of heating elements, checking the pH and hardness of the system water.
  • Every 5–7 years: Chemical flushing and descaling of the system, possibly replacement of the expansion tank membrane.

When to call a service and when you can do it yourself

Specific notes on individual power models

Failures also vary according to the boiler's power rating. From practice we know that:

Daline PTE 4 kW and 6 kW are single-phase models suitable for smaller spaces, apartments or cottages. We most often encounter insufficient circuit protection (people use a 16 A circuit breaker instead of the recommended 25 A) and short cycling in a small system without a buffer tank. These models also have a smaller internal expansion tank (typically 8 liters), so an external expansion is needed for larger system volumes.

Daline PTE 8 kW is the first three-phase model in the series and also the most commonly sold. Problems here are mostly related to the three-phase power supply (missing phase, incorrect phase sequence), and also to the selection of an unsuitable electricity tariff. Daline PTE 14 kW and 18 kW are powerful models for larger homes. These boilers have more heating elements (e.g. 3×2 kW + 3×4 kW in staged control), which means that failure of one element does not necessarily disable the boiler – it only reduces its performance. It is important to recognize this condition (the boiler heats, but does not reach the set temperature even after long operation) and seek service in time, not ignore it.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

The Daline PTE boiler constantly activates the safety valve and water is leaking from it – why?

The safety valve opens at a pressure of typically 3 bar (for this model). If it opens during normal operation, there are three possible causes: oversized or worn expansion tank (air cushion has been released or the membrane has burst), excessively high system temperature (the valve also opens due to thermal excess), or the valve itself is dirty and leaking – with each opening it collects dirt and the seal wears out. The solution is to check the pre-charge pressure of the expansion tank and possibly replace the safety valve (a cheap and simple replacement for a service technician).

Why does the boiler run, but the electricity meter hardly turns – it is not heating at full capacity?

Certain versions of Daline PTE have staged power control (e.g. 1st stage = 1/3 power, 2nd = 2/3, 3rd = full power). If the outside temperature is not extremely low, the boiler usually operates at a lower stage. This is normal and desirable – it prolongs the life of the elements and saves electricity. However, if the boiler does not switch to full power even during strong frost and is insufficient for heating, the problem may be a faulty element or the control electronics that do not correctly evaluate the demand.

How long does it take for Daline PTE to heat a cold system from the start?

It depends on the boiler's power and the volume of water in the system. Approximately: an 8 kW boiler heats 200 liters of water from 15 °C to 65 °C in about 3–3.5 hours (at full power without heat loss). A larger system (floor heating 600 liters) with an 18 kW boiler can achieve heating in a similar time. If heating takes significantly longer (e.g. 6–7 hours for a small system), it is a sign of a faulty heating element or low power.

The boiler is working, but I hear loud cracking – is it dangerous?

Cracking caused by scale on the elements is not immediately dangerous, but it is a warning sign. Scale is a thermal insulator – the heating element must heat to a higher temperature to deliver the same amount of heat, which accelerates its wear. If the cracking lasts longer than one heating season without improvement, have the elements cleaned or replaced and consider water treatment.

Is it possible to replace only one of the three heating elements?

Technically yes – each element is separate and replaceable independently. Practically, experts recommend replacing all elements at once if they are older than 8–10 years and one has just failed. The reason is simple: you will save on another service technician visit in one or two years when the second one fails. Replacing one element takes about the same labor time as replacing three, so the difference in total costs is relatively small.

Can I operate the Daline PTE boiler without an expansion tank?

No. The expansion tank is a safety and functional component of the system. Without it, pressure in the closed system would rocket with every heating (water expands when heated) and the safety valve would constantly release water. In addition to ecological and economic loss, there would be constant corrosion and scaling in the system. If the internal tank is insufficient (for larger systems), add an external expansion tank.
