Electric boiler performance of Daline PTE: how to correctly calculate what your home really needs

One of the most common mistakes when buying an electric boiler is choosing the power "by eye" or based on the apartment area from memory. The result is often a boiler that either cannot heat the house in the cold or, conversely, an unnecessarily large unit that runs in short cycles, wears out faster, and consumes expensive electricity inefficiently. With the Buderus Dakon Daline PTE range of boilers, this choice is especially important, as the series offers several power levels – from compact 4 kW to robust 18 kW – and each has a different ideal application. In this article, I will show you how to calculate step by step, what influences it, and which model is suitable for which type of property.

Why boiler power is so important – and why a larger one is not automatically better

In practice, I encounter two extremes. The first is a customer who buys the smallest available boiler because "it will be enough" – and then calls in January to say it's only 14 degrees in the house. The second buys the maximum power to have a reserve – and that reserve costs unnecessary money on electricity every month, because the boiler works inefficiently in short cycles (so-called short cycle) instead of long, smooth heating periods.

An electric boiler, unlike a gas or heat pump, converts electricity into heat with an efficiency close to 100%. The power you set on the boiler really corresponds to the heat supplied to the heating system. This is an advantage, but also a responsibility – a lack of power cannot be "bypassed" with a heat storage as easily as with larger sources, and excess power is directly reflected on the electricity meter.

Basic method for calculating building heat loss

The correct boiler power should cover the heat loss of the building at the design outdoor temperature (in Slovakia usually –12 °C to –15 °C depending on the climatic zone). Heat loss is calculated according to the standard STN EN 12831 and includes losses through heat transfer through perimeter structures (walls, roof, floor, windows) and ventilation losses.

For the purposes of this article, we will show a simplified but practically usable estimate. A professional energy assessment is more accurate, but this procedure will give you a good orientation and help in choosing the power level.

Step 1: Area and enclosed volume

Start with the total usable area (m²) – this is the sum of all heated rooms. Do not include non-heated areas: garage, basement without heating, unheated hallway. In a multi-storey house, add the areas of all heated floors.

Step 2: Specific heat output according to the building standard

The basic approximate value of specific heat output depends on how the house was built and insulated:

  • Old construction before 1980, not insulated: 100–120 W/m²
  • Panel or masonry house 1980–2000, partially insulated: 70–90 W/m²
  • New or renovated house after 2000, insulated: 40–60 W/m²
  • Low-energy house (thick insulation ≥ 15 cm, triple glazing): 25–40 W/m²
  • Passive house: 10–20 W/m²

The result is obtained by simple multiplication: Required power (W) = area (m²) × specific power (W/m²).

Example: A masonry family house from 1995, 130 m², insulated facade 8 cm, new windows → specific power about 65 W/m² → 130 × 65 = 8 450 W ≈ 8.5 kW. In this case, the suitable model would be Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 8 kW, or with a slight reserve 14 kW, if you plan to add hot water heating or a storage tank in the future.

Factors that significantly change the result – don’t overlook them

Calculating based on area is just the basis. In practice, it is adjusted by a whole range of other factors that can increase or decrease the required output by 20–40 %.

Climatic zone and elevation

Slovakia has a quite diverse climatic map. Bratislava and southern Podunajsko have a design outdoor temperature of –10 °C to –12 °C. The mountainous central and northern parts of Slovakia – Liptov, Orava, Kysuce – can have a design temperature of –16 °C to –18 °C. This means that the same house in Ružomberok will require 30–40 % more power than an identical house in Dunajská Streda. For houses located above 600 m a.s.l., always add at least 15–20 % more to the basic output.

Orientation and shape of the house

A house with large glazed areas facing north loses much more heat than a house with the same area but windows mainly facing south (where passive solar gain helps). Atrium houses, L-shaped or T-shaped floor plans have a larger perimeter of the envelope in relation to the area and thus higher losses. A compact house with a simple rectangular floor plan is more efficient in terms of losses.

Ceilings and room heights

Old houses, older panels, and historic buildings often have ceilings of 3.0–3.5 m or even higher. The volume of air that needs to be heated and maintained is significantly greater. The specific output W/m² was originally derived for a standard height of 2.5–2.7 m. If your house is higher, adjust the coefficient upwards: for a height of 3.0 m, add approximately 10 %, for 3.5 m, approximately 20 %.

Hot water heating (TÚV)

The Daline PTE boiler can also be used for hot water heating via an external tank. If you plan to solve TÚV with an electric boiler (not a separate water heater), you must add the power required for TÚV heating to the heating power. For a typical family of four with a daily consumption of approximately 150–200 liters of hot water, this means an additional power of 3–6 kW, or possibly a larger tank with slower heating overnight (in combination with a night tariff). Heating system: radiators vs. underfloor heating

Radiator systems operate at higher water temperatures (55–75 °C), while underfloor heating operates at low temperatures (30–45 °C). Daline PTE is capable of working with both. In terms of boiler power, this does not make a direct difference – but when designing a system with a storage tank and underfloor heating, it is necessary to carefully design the tank volume. Number of people in the household and usage

A vacation cabin that is heated only occasionally has different requirements than a permanently occupied family home. In the case of occasional heating, the importance of the heating-up speed – the boiler’s ability to quickly heat a cooled space – increases. In this case, a slightly higher power is more advantageous to avoid multi-hour heating-up periods upon arrival.

Overview of power levels and their ideal application

The Daline PTE series is available in five power variants. Each has a clear application, although they often overlap in practice, and the decisive factor is always a specific calculation for a given building.

Daline PTE 4 kW – for small apartments and studios

Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 4 kW is the smallest member of the family. It is suitable mainly for:

  • Smaller apartments up to 40–50 m² in an insulated panel building or new construction
  • Garden cottages and recreational buildings with occasional heating up to 30–40 m²
  • Supplementary heating in combination with another heat source (e.g., a fireplace insert as primary + Daline boiler as backup)
  • Garages and workshops, where it is sufficient to maintain an anti-frost temperature

4 kW is not sufficient for a family house – even with good insulation. At the same time, it is usually a power level that does not require a special three-phase connection (depends on the specific conditions of the distribution company).

Daline PTE 6 kW – for smaller apartments and studios

Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 6 kW is suitable for:

  • Apartments 50–75 m² in panel buildings or renovated buildings
  • Family houses up to 60 m² with excellent insulation (low-energy standard)
  • Apartment hotels in the mountains and recreational cottages up to 60–70 m² in a moderately cold climatic zone

The 6 kW model is also popular as a secondary, backup heat source in hybrid systems, where the primary source is a heat pump or a fireplace insert with a heat exchanger.

Daline PTE 8 kW – the most popular, for a typical family house

Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 8 kW is probably the most versatile choice and in practice the most frequently ordered model. It covers:

  • Family houses 75–110 m² with good insulation (new construction after 2000)
  • Older houses 60–80 m² with average insulation
  • Larger apartments 80–100 m² in the old housing stock after partial renovation
  • Recreational buildings in mountainous areas with a design temperature of –16 °C and lower

At this power level, a three-phase electrical connection 3×400 V is almost always required. Don’t forget to consult this in advance with an electrician and the electricity distributor.

Daline PTE 14 kW – for larger houses and buildings with TÚV

Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 14 kW finds application in:

  • Family homes 120–170 m² with standard insulation
  • Homes 80–120 m² in mountainous areas with harsh winters
  • Systems where the boiler also covers DHW heating via a tank for 4–6 person households
  • Buildings with large floor heating areas, where a thermal storage tank is suitable – the boiler then charges the tank faster and more efficiently
  • Two-generation homes and commercial premises with attached buildings

Daline PTE 18 kW – for large homes and commercial buildings

Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 18 kW is the most powerful variant in the series:

  • Large family homes 170–230 m² with medium to good insulation
  • Smaller business premises, offices or guesthouses
  • Historic buildings with limited insulation possibilities and high losses
  • Systems with a large thermal storage tank (300–500 l), where the boiler is operated in night mode with a low tariff

With 18 kW, always check in advance whether your electrical connection can handle such a load. Maximum consumption at this power is approx. 26–27 A per phase, which may require strengthening the home electrical connection or modifying the main circuit breaker.

Practical examples from real customer cases

In practice, I have dealt with dozens of similar inquiries. Here are typical scenarios I encounter:

Case #1 – Panel apartment, Bratislava, 68 m²: The customer disconnected from the block heating system (district heating) and was looking for a replacement. The building was from 1985, windows replaced, no facade insulation. Estimated specific power at 75 W/m². Calculation: 68 × 75 = 5,100 W. A PTE 6 kW was selected with a small reserve, without DHW (which is handled by an 80 l electric water heater). Result: satisfied, the house heats up to 22 °C even at –15 °C.

Case #2 – New build, 140 m², Liptov: A family house built in 2019, 15 cm insulation, triple glazing, design temperature –18 °C. Specific power at 42 W/m². Calculation: 140 × 42 = 5,880 W – but a climate correction for Liptov +20 % = 7,056 W. A PTE 8 kW was selected, which also covers DHW via a small 150 l tank with a night tariff. Works without problems.

Case #3 – Old masonry house, Central Slovakia, 180 m²: A house from 1960, 45 cm brick wall without insulation, windows renovated, floors insulated. Specific power at 95 W/m². Calculation: 180 × 95 = 17,100 W. A PTE 18 kW with a 500 l thermal storage tank was selected. Heating works in combination with a dual tariff – the boiler runs mostly at night. Monthly electricity costs are approx. 250–300 € in winter, which is in line with expectations for such a building.

Case #4 – Recreational cabin, Orava, 45 m²: A wooden cabin, weak insulation, occasional heating. A quick warm-up was important here – the customer comes on the weekend to a cold space. Specific power at 110 W/m², but the area is small. Calculation: 45 × 110 = 4,950 W. A PTE 6 kW was selected instead of 4 kW precisely for faster warm-up and a reserve for colder Orava winters. Result: correct decision.

Mistakes people make when selecting power

Based on experience from customer cases, here are the most common mistakes:

  • Comparing with the power of an old boiler: The old boiler was sized according to an uninsulated house. If you have since insulated the facade, replaced the windows and insulated the ceiling – the required power may have halved. Old power = bad reference point.
  • Ignoring the climatic zone: Customers from mountainous areas sometimes take a boiler sized for the plains and it doesn't manage.
  • Not including DHW: If the boiler is to also cover hot water, the power must be correspondingly higher – or a thermal storage tank with sufficient capacity must be designed.
  • Too much reserve: Choosing a boiler "two categories larger just to be sure" leads to inefficient operation, unnecessary short cycles and higher costs.
  • Forgetting about the electrical connection: Before ordering a boiler above 6–8 kW, always consult with an electrician and the distribution company to see if the connection and circuit breakers are sufficient. How to take into account planned reconstruction or house extension

If you plan to insulate the facade, replace the windows or add another room within the next 2–5 years, you must take this into account when selecting the boiler power right now. In most cases, I recommend selecting a power that corresponds to the current condition of the building – reconstruction significantly reduces heat losses and after that, a boiler suitable for the current condition may be oversized.

Conversely, if you plan an addition or a significant expansion of the heated area, include it in the calculation in advance and choose a model one step more powerful. Replacing the boiler with a more powerful one several years later costs extra work, time, and money.

Also pay attention to the combination of the boiler with a heat pump or a solar system. If you plan to connect an air-to-water heat pump as the primary source in the future and use the boiler only as a bivalent backup source for extreme cold, you can afford to choose a lower boiler capacity – for example, a 6–8 kW electric boiler is sufficient as a backup for a house with a heat loss of 10 kW.

Electricity, circuit breakers and distribution network – what to check before purchase

The Daline PTE electric boiler is not an appliance you plug into a regular socket. From 6 kW upwards, it is mostly a three-phase appliance (3×400 V, 50 Hz), which requires:

  • A three-phase electrical connection (three phases + neutral conductor + grounding)
  • A dimensioned main circuit breaker (e.g., for 8 kW, a minimum of 16 A per phase is required, for 18 kW a minimum of 32 A per phase)
  • A cable route of corresponding cross-section from the distribution board to the boiler (e.g., for 8 kW at least 2.5 mm², for 14–18 kW 4–6 mm² Cu)
  • Protection and isolation by a residual current device (RCD)

If your household has only had a single-phase connection so far (e.g., an older family house or an apartment), acquiring a three-phase connection requires an agreement with the distribution company and can take several weeks to months. This is important to consider when planning the installation date.

Power regulation in practice: why a "sufficiently powerful" boiler is not enough

The Daline PTE boiler does not regulate power continuously (it is not a modulating boiler), but in steps – thanks to multiple heating elements that are switched on or off as needed. This means that an 8 kW model can operate, for example, at 2 kW, 4 kW, 6 kW or 8 kW, depending on the demand from the controller. It is important to understand this stepwise control: a boiler with excessive capacity will mostly operate at the minimum level during the transitional period (September, October, April), which is more efficient than with a single-zone boiler, but still not optimal.

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I later increase the power of the Daline PTE boiler if it turns out to be insufficient?

No, the power of the Daline PTE electric boiler cannot be increased additionally, either through software or by a module. It is a fixed hardware configuration of heating elements. If you find out that the selected model is insufficient, the only option is to replace it with a more powerful model or to install a second, additional heat source. Therefore, it is worth doing the calculation carefully in advance or choosing a model one step more powerful in case of doubts.

How much does it matter whether the house is in Bratislava or on the Orava?

It matters very significantly. The calculated outside temperature for Bratislava is –12 °C, while for the northern mountainous areas of Slovakia (Orava, Kysuce, Tatras) it can be as low as –18 °C. A 6 °C difference in the design temperature means a 25–35 % higher heat loss for the same house and the same indoor comfort. In practice, this can mean the difference between an 8 kW model (for the west) and a 14 kW model (for the north) for an identical house.

Do I need a building permit or project for the Daline PTE boiler?

The electric boiler itself, as a heat source, does not require a separate building permit. However, it must be installed by a qualified person (an electrician with the appropriate qualifications) and the installation must comply with current standards (STN 33 2000-7-701 and others). After the installation is completed, the electrician will issue an inspection certificate. Is it better to choose a higher power for faster heating?

To a limited extent, yes – a boiler with more reserve power will balance with the building faster after a long cooling period (e.g., after a weekend in a recreational cabin). However, overdimensioning the power by more than 20–30 % of the required value is inefficient: the boiler runs in short cycles, the heating elements are more stressed, and the regulation performs worse. If you want a faster response without an oversized boiler, a better option is a storage tank, which absorbs energy and releases it to the system more smoothly.

A combined system is common in renovations. The Daline PTE boiler can serve both circuits – radiator (higher temperature) and floor heating (lower temperature) – but requires proper hydraulic connection with a mixing valve for the floor heating circuit and suitable pumps. A larger air volume means higher energy loss from ventilation and a larger volume to heat. The standard coefficient W/m² should be increased by approximately 10–12 % for a 3.0 m ceiling, and by approximately 20–25 % for a 3.5 m ceiling. This can shift the selection up by one power level.
