The electric boiler Buderus Dakon Daline PTE belongs to technically less demanding heating devices in terms of its construction, but its correct installation requires thorough preparation, compliance with current standards and – in many cases – cooperation with a qualified person. In this article, we will go through the entire process from the first look at the installation site to the boiler being put into operation. We will focus on specific requirements: electrical connection, hydraulic connection, placement, expansion tank, safety valve, setting the regulation and typical errors that occur in practical applications.

What you need to know before ordering materials
Before you buy any materials and start preparing, check a few basic facts about your property and existing installation. Neglecting this phase is the most common reason why customers then call with problems at startup or have to wait for an electrician because the household circuit breaker keeps tripping.
Boiler power vs. electrical installation capacity: Daline PTE boilers are manufactured in a range from 4 kW to 18 kW. Models Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 4 kW and Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 6 kW operate on single-phase power supply 230 V, while models from 8 kW and higher – that is PTE 8 kW, PTE 14 kW and PTE 18 kW – require three-phase power supply 400 V / 3+N+PE. This is a key point: if your house does not have a three-phase connection, you must first agree with the electricity distributor on its installation or increasing the reserved capacity. This process takes 4–12 weeks in practice.
DD tariff: For electric heating it is necessary to have the correct tariff from the electricity supplier (DD5, DD6 or DD7 in Slovakia). Without it, you will pay significantly higher price per kWh and the economics of the whole system will deteriorate. Existing heating system: Daline PTE is a boiler for a closed water heating system. If you are replacing an old coal boiler or another source, check the condition of the piping, radiators and expansion tank. An old system may have corrosion, sludge or unsuitable pipe dimensions.
Space requirements and boiler placement
The Daline PTE boiler is designed as a compact wall-mounted unit. Unlike gas boilers, it does not require any air intake or exhaust, which significantly simplifies the choice of location. Despite this, there are certain minimum clearances and conditions that you must comply with.
Minimum clearances are as follows: at least 150 mm above the boiler (some manufacturers recommend 200 mm for possible removal of the cover), at least 200 mm on the sides, and you must ensure a free service space of at least 600 mm in front of the boiler. Under the boiler are the hydraulic connections, so there is no need for a special clearance there, but access to them must be convenient.
The boiler must not be installed in damp areas without appropriate IP protection (standard version has IP 20 – i.e. not in bathrooms). If you want to install the boiler in an unheated area (garage, technical room with temperatures below 5 °C), make sure that the system is protected against freezing when switched off – either by the boiler's anti-freeze function or by year-round circulation with an antifreeze mixture.
Electrical connection – standards, fuses, cables
This is an area where an amateur approach can have serious consequences. The electrical connection of Daline PTE boilers must be performed by an electrician with professional qualification according to Ordinance No. 508/2009 Coll. and must be documented by an inspection report. Without it, the insurance company may not cover the damage in case of fire or failure.
For single-phase models PTE 4 kW and PTE 6 kW the following applies:
- Power supply 230 V / 50 Hz, single-phase
- Rated current PTE 4 kW: approx. 18 A, PTE 6 kW: approx. 27 A
- Supply cable: CYKY-J 3×4 mm² for 4 kW, 3×6 mm² for 6 kW
- Circuit breaker: minimum B25 for 4 kW, B32 for 6 kW – always with 30 mA residual current device (RCD)
- RCD (residual current device) 30 mA is mandatory for all electric heaters
For three-phase models PTE 8 kW, PTE 14 kW and PTE 18 kW the following applies:
- Power supply 400 V / 3+N+PE / 50 Hz
- Rated current PTE 8 kW: approx. 12 A per phase, PTE 14 kW: approx. 21 A per phase, PTE 18 kW: approx. 27 A per phase
- Supply cable: CYKY-J 5×4 mm² for 8 kW, 5×6 mm² for 14 kW, 5×10 mm² for 18 kW
- Circuit breaker: 3-pole B16 for 8 kW, B25 for 14 kW, B32–B40 for 18 kW
- 4-pole RCD 30 mA
- Load must be evenly distributed across all three phases – the boiler does this automatically through its power stages
The length of the supply line from the distribution board to the boiler installation location directly affects the cable cross-sections (voltage drop must not exceed 3 % at full load). If the wiring is longer than 15–20 meters, the electrician must recalculate the cross-sections and possibly choose a thicker cable.
HDO (remote mass control): To obtain the low DD tariff, the boiler must be connected to the distributor's HDO receiver. The Daline PTE has input terminals for the HDO signal (usually labeled HP or similar), which disconnect the heater temporarily when a blocking signal is received (night rate disabled). The HDO connection must be implemented according to the specific distributor's scheme (ZSE, SSE, VSE).
Hydraulic connection – what to connect where and why
The hydraulic part of the Daline PTE boiler installation is as important as the electrical part. Incorrect connection can lead to uncontrolled pressure surges, boiler overheating, cavitation of the circulation pump, or safety valve failures.
The Daline PTE boiler has two main hydraulic ports: hot water output (flow) and return of cooled water from the system. Both ports are usually threaded G¾" or G1", depending on the model and power. Always check the boiler's technical documentation, as swapping the output and return is a common mistake during the first installation.
Required elements of the hydraulic circuit
- Ball valves on the boiler's supply and return – allow the boiler to be isolated without draining the entire system
- Safety valve set to 3 bar (or according to the maximum operating pressure of the system, but never higher than 3 bar for standard radiator systems) – mandatory safety component, must be installed so that it is clearly visible in case of opening and its discharge points away from electrical components
- Expansion tank – compensates for the thermal expansion of water during heating; the tank volume is dimensioned according to the total water volume in the system (approximately 1/10 of the system's water volume, but always calculated for the specific case)
- Circulation pump – the Daline PTE in most versions does not have an integrated pump, so it must be installed externally on the return pipe before the boiler; pump selection depends on the hydraulic resistance of the system
- Drain valves – at the highest points of the system and on the boiler itself
- Filling and draining valve with a hose connection – for filling the system and its maintenance
- Filter (filter insert) on the return pipe before the boiler – captures mechanical impurities and protects the heating element
System operating pressure: The Daline PTE is designed for closed heating systems with an operating pressure up to 3 bar and a maximum output temperature of 85 °C. During normal operation, the pressure ranges from 1.0–2.0 bar in the cold state and 1.5–2.5 bar at operating temperature. If the pressure after heating exceeds 2.5 bar, the expansion tank is undersized or damaged.
Installation process – step by step
Here is a practical step-by-step process that reflects the real progress of a customer order from arrival at the site to the handover of a working device to the customer.
Step 1: Site preparation and base inspection
Check whether the wall can support the boiler's weight (Daline PTE weighs 12–22 kg depending on the power). In the case of a plasterboard partition, use chemical anchors or anchor into the load-bearing structure. Plan cable and pipe routes so they are hidden or routed in conduits.
Step 2: Hanging the boiler and checking vertical alignment
Use the mounting drawing from the boiler's packaging. Attach the mounting template (if provided) or measure the position of the holes according to the documentation. The boiler is mounted on two hanging points at the top of the rear panel. After hanging, check with a spirit level whether the boiler is in a vertical position – this is important for the proper function of the air vent and any integrated pump.
Step 3: Hydraulic connection
Install ball valves directly on the boiler's inlet and outlet nozzles. Then gradually connect the rest of the system – safety valve, expansion tank, pump, filters. Seal all threaded connections with hemp and paste or PTFE tape (for metal threads). Do not use PTFE tape on coarse threads G¾" and larger – for larger diameters, hemp + paste is more reliable. Before connecting electricity, perform a pressure test with water at 1.5× working pressure (typically 4–4.5 bar) for 30 minutes and check all connections.
Step 4: Electrical connection
The electrical connection is performed exclusively by an electrician. The procedure is as follows: bring the power supply to the boiler through a cable gland, connect the phases, the neutral conductor and the protective conductor PE to the terminal block according to the scheme in the boiler's documentation. Then connect the signal input for HDO and possibly an external thermostat or bus control (e.g. OpenTherm, if the boiler and controller support this protocol).
Step 5: Filling the system, venting, pressure check
Fill the system slowly through the filling valve, monitor the pressure gauge – stop at a pressure of approx. 1.0–1.5 bar. Then open the air vents on the radiators and the highest points of the system and let the air escape. Repeat filling and venting until only water comes out of the valves. The final cold pressure should be 1.0–1.5 bar depending on the building height (add 1 bar for every 10 m of height + 0.5 bar reserve).
Step 6: First start-up and setting
Only after the complete hydraulic connection, venting and electrical inspection can the boiler be turned on for the first time. Set the required output temperature, controller and check whether the pump is running, the pressure in the system remains stable and the boiler is not making noise. Expansion tank sizing – specific procedure
The expansion tank is a small but critically important component. An undersized tank causes the safety valve to drip slightly during each heating cycle – and this is the most frequently reported issue by customers after a few months of operation: "the valve is dripping, I don't know why".
Basic calculation procedure:
- Determine the total volume of water in the system (volume of radiators + pipes + boiler) – approximately 10–15 liters per 1 kW of power for an older radiator system
- For a system with a 14 kW boiler and old cast iron radiators, this can be easily 150–200 liters of water
- Expansion tank volume = approx. 10–12 % of the water volume = 15–24 liters → choose an 18 or 25-liter tank
- Set the pre-pressure in the tank to the same value as the static height of the system in bars (e.g. a building 6 m high → pre-pressure 0.6 bar)
If you are unsure, always choose a larger tank – an oversized expansion tank will not cause any damage, an undersized one will.
Requirements for water in the system – chemical treatment
This is a point that is underestimated much more for electric boilers than for gas ones. The heating element of the Daline PTE boiler (radiant tube/coil) is in direct contact with the system water. Hard water with a high content of calcium and magnesium causes limescale deposition on the heating element, which leads to local overheating, reduced lifespan and in extreme cases even to cracking of the element.
Recommendations:
- If the water hardness in your area is higher than 10 °dH (German hardness degrees), use softened or demineralized water for filling
- Add a corrosion and limescale inhibitor (e.g. Sentinel X100 or similar) – dose according to the manufacturer's instructions and the boiler manufacturer's recommendation
- Never use antifreeze mixtures without prior verification of compatibility with the boiler materials (some glycol mixtures damage seals)
- Keep the pH of the water in the system within the range of 7.0–8.5
Typical installation errors and their consequences
From real customer experience, we know which errors are repeated most often. Here is an overview with a description of the consequences:
- Reversed supply and return: The boiler is working, but it is not heating the system properly; the circulation is going in the opposite direction, which can lead to overheating in the boiler and triggering the thermal cut-out
- Missing or incorrectly set safety valve: In case of a failure of the expansion tank, the pressure in the system rises uncontrollably – risk of boiler or pipe damage
- Insufficient air venting: Air in the system causes noise (bubbling sound), interrupted circulation, and in the case of an electric boiler, also overheating of the heating element (air has much worse thermal conductivity than water)
- Too small expansion tank: The safety valve drips during each heating cycle, water leaks out and the pressure in the system drops → the boiler reports low pressure error or shuts down
- Missing filter on the return: Mechanical impurities from the distribution system damage the pump and clog the heating element
- Insufficient cable cross-section: Cable overheating, circuit breaker tripping, in the worst case insulation damage
- Unconnected HDO: The boiler is working, but it is still on the full-rate tariff – the customer pays unnecessarily high electricity bills
- Boiler without professional inspection: Insurance coverage in case of damage may not be valid; during the sale of real estate, the inspection may be required
Connection to a storage tank or floor heating
An electric boiler and a storage tank are a very functional combination especially with a low-rate tariff. The boiler heats water in the storage tank to 75–85 °C during the low-rate period, and the tank then gradually transfers heat to the heating system even when the tariff is more expensive or the HDO signal is blocked. With floor heating, several issues need to be addressed: floor heating circuits operate with significantly lower temperatures (30–45 °C) than the boiler can supply. A mixing unit (three-way valve with a pump) is therefore necessary to mix hot water from the boiler with cooled water from the return of the floor heating circuits to the desired temperature. Without a mixer, direct connection would make the floor uncomfortably hot and could damage the pipes.
Inspection, protocol and warranty conditions
After the installation is completed, the electrician must prepare a report on the professional inspection and electrical test of the electrical installation (inspection report). Without it, the legal obligation is not fulfilled and an insurance claim may be rejected.
The boiler manufacturer (Buderus/Dakon) usually requires an authorized service technician or at least a qualified person to perform the first commissioning for the warranty to be valid, and a commissioning protocol (so-called warranty card with the service company's seal) must be prepared. Always check this condition in the warranty terms of the specific model.
In practice, we recommend: when purchasing a boiler, immediately find out who the authorized service is in your region and schedule the first start-up. Some sellers (including e-shops) can facilitate contact with an authorized service.
What materials and tools you will need
For completeness, we list what you need to bring to the job (or what the customer must prepare in advance):
- Daline PTE boiler of the appropriate power (e.g., PTE 8 kW for a typical family house up to 100 m²)
- Ball valves (2× for the boiler supply and return), preferably with a bottom bleed valve
- Safety valve 3 bar with G½" neck
- Membrane expansion tank (volume according to calculation, pre-pressure set before installation)
- Circulation pump (e.g. Grundfos ALPHA or similar, power according to system hydraulics)
- Ball valve with filling and draining connection
- Automatic air vent (ideally on the boiler outlet)
- Y-filter or direct filter on the return pipe
- Corrosion and scale inhibitor
- Thermometer and manometer (combined, for direct installation on the pipe)
- Supply cable of appropriate cross-section, 30 mA residual current device, circuit breaker
- HDO receiver (from the electricity distributor)
- Thermostat or programmable controller (if not integrated)
- Tools: wrenches, spirit level, drill, sealing material, pressure pump for pressure testing
Final commissioning and handover to the customer
After hydraulic and electrical connections, a successful pressure test and electrical inspection, the first start-up follows. During the first start-up, monitor the following:
- The circulation pump must start – you can hear gentle bubbling sounds that gradually subside as air is purged
- The boiler must go through the start-up process (sensor check, self-test) and begin heating
- The outlet temperature must rise according to the setting, the pressure in the system must remain stable (a drop of 0.1–0.2 bar during heating is normal if the system is not fully purged)
- No error code must be displayed on the boiler's display
- The safety valve must not drip during the first heating (if it does, the pressure in the expansion tank is incorrect or the tank is undersized)
The customer needs to be explained: where the safety valve is located and what to do if it drips; how to fill the system with water if the pressure drops; where the main boiler switch is; how to set the temperature and the time program. All of this reduces the number of service calls during the warranty period, which are often caused by lack of knowledge.
Common questions (FAQ)
Can I connect the Daline PTE boiler myself without an electrician?
The hydraulic part (pipes, valves, expansion tank) can be installed by a skilled layperson if they have experience with heating system work. However, the electrical connection must be carried out exclusively by a person with professional qualifications for electrical installations according to Slovak regulations. In addition to the legal obligation, this is also a condition of the manufacturer's warranty – without an inspection report, your boiler warranty may not be recognized. In the case of damage caused by unprofessional installation, the insurance company will refuse to pay.
What circuit breaker and cable do I need for Daline PTE 14 kW?
The model PTE 14 kW requires three-phase 400 V power supply. The nominal current is approximately 20–21 A per phase. The recommended supply cable is CYKY-J 5×6 mm², a 3-pole circuit breaker with characteristic B, 25 A. A four-pole residual current device with 30 mA is also recommended. The cable length and final cross-section must always be checked by the designer or electrician with regard to voltage drop for the specific route length.
Why is the boiler bubbling and making noise immediately after installation?
The bubbling sound in the boiler or pipes immediately after the first start-up is almost always due to residual air in the system. This is normal – the system has never been operated before and air was not completely purged even during filling. Open the air vents on the radiators (start with those closest to the boiler, proceed further away), release the air, check the pressure again and add water if necessary. Most of the noise disappears after the first 2–4 hours of operation. If the noise persists for longer, check whether the circulation pump is circulating properly (it may be clogged or the speed may be incorrectly set).
Is an expansion tank necessary if I have an old open system?
If you are converting an old open system (with an expansion tank open in the basement or at the highest point) to a closed system with a Daline PTE boiler, yes – you must install a pressurized (membrane) expansion tank and a safety valve. An open system with an electric boiler is unsuitable and dangerous: the electric heating element could operate "dry" at the point of contact with water due to level fluctuations and overheat. A closed system is the only correct solution.
How long does the entire installation take from boiler delivery to start-up?
It depends on the scope of work and the condition of the existing system. In a complete new build with a new electrical installation and new piping, the realization takes 2–4 days (including waiting for the inspection). When replacing an old boiler with a Daline PTE in an existing system, an experienced company can complete the hydraulic part in 4–6 hours and the electrical connection in 2–3 hours. Electrical inspection – depending on the availability of the inspection technician – can add 1–3 days of waiting. In practice: customers who do not book the inspection technician in advance sometimes wait a week. Therefore, book the inspection in parallel with ordering the boiler.
Can I use antifreeze (glycol) instead of water?
Yes, but with conditions. Glycol reduces the thermal capacity and increases the viscosity of the liquid, which means the circulation pump must be more powerful and the entire hydraulics must be recalculated. The boiler manufacturer must explicitly approve the type of inhibitor/glycol mixture. Pure automotive coolant liquids are prohibited – they are not certified for heating systems and can damage seals. Use only inhibited propylene glycol or ethylene glycol certified for heating systems. Set the concentration according to the expected minimum temperature in the room where the system is located.
