An electric boiler is the easiest to operate of all heat sources – that is a fact. No combustion, no soot cleaning, no chimney. Despite this, it happens that after five years a customer calls saying the boiler "isn't working", and upon closer inspection we find out that the boiler was never properly looked at, the safety valve is stuck due to limescale, the expansion tank is empty like a balloon after a party, and the water in the system is so dark it could be sold as ink. Why it pays to regularly maintain an electric boiler
An electric boiler does not have moving parts in the classical sense (no motor pump with combustion, no burner), but it does have several components that are subject to wear or clogging. The main risks of neglecting maintenance are:
- Limescale deposits on heating elements – limescale is a thermal insulator. A 1 mm layer of scale increases energy consumption by about 7–10 %. On a high-performance boiler, this is not a negligible number.
- Corrosion inside the boiler and radiators – dissolved oxygen in water attacks steel and cast iron components. Result: sludge, rust, reduced circulation, clogged valves.
- Expansion tank failure – if the membrane breaks or gas escapes, the pressure in the system fluctuates, the safety valve releases water, and the boiler may experience outages.
- Stuck safety valve – during long-term non-use, the valve calcifies and does not open during a real overpressure. Consequence: uncontrolled pressure rise, boiler or piping damage.
- Damaged pump – the circulation pump in the boiler (or external) can jam after being turned off in summer if no one moves it.
- Failure of control electronics – printed circuits and sensors do not function forever, especially if they are exposed to vibrations, humidity or overvoltage.
Most of these problems can be prevented or caught early, while they are still cheap to fix. Let's go through them in order.
Water pressure in the system – the most frequent check
This is the first thing every electric boiler owner should know how to do themselves. The pressure gauge (manometer) is located directly on the boiler and shows the operating pressure of the central heating system. For most closed systems the following applies:
- Cold system (before starting): 1.0 – 1.5 bar
- Hot system (in operation): 1.5 – 2.0 bar
- Maximum allowed pressure: 3 bar (above this the safety valve opens)
If the pressure drops below 0.8 bar, the boiler usually shuts down and displays an error code (for example F22 or P02 depending on the firmware version). If the pressure regularly drops and you have to add water every 2–4 weeks, it is a sign of a leak somewhere in the system or a faulty expansion tank – not just "normal" system behavior.
How to properly add pressure: On Daline PTE boilers, a filling valve is standard – a blue or red valve with a double lever on the bottom of the boiler. Open it slowly, monitor the manometer and stop at 1.2–1.5 bar in the cold state. After closing the valve, check if the pressure holds. If it starts to drop immediately, you have a leak.
Interval: Check the pressure visually at least once a month during the heating season. Always check and possibly top up before starting the season.
Depressurizing radiators and the boiler
Air in the system is a classic problem we encounter practically with every customer after the summer shutdown or after refilling the system. Air reduces heating efficiency (the top of the radiator is cold), causes noise (hissing, gurgling), and can damage the pump if you let it run dry for a long time.
Daline PTE boilers have an automatic air vent located on the top of the boiler or on the outlet pipe. This automatic valve usually works well, but it does not always manage to bleed the entire system, especially if it is large or has a complex configuration (underfloor heating + radiators, multiple circuits).
Manual radiator bleeding procedure:
- Keep the boiler running, the pump must be circulating.
- Start with radiators on the highest floor – air rises upwards.
- Using a bleed key (a small square key, approx. 5–6 mm), turn the valve counterclockwise by 1/4 turn.
- Wait until the hissing stops and water starts to drip – then close the valve.
- After bleeding, check the boiler pressure – it likely has dropped and needs to be refilled.
Interval: Before each heating season. If during the season you notice cold upper parts of radiators or a noisy system – bleed immediately.
Expansion tank – membrane pressure check
The expansion tank is one of the most overlooked components of the entire system. It is a tank (usually red, located behind the boiler or directly in the boiler for smaller units), which compensates for the expansion of water when heated. Without a functional expansion tank, pressure would rapidly rise with every heating cycle, the safety valve would release water, and the system would be unstable.
Inside the expansion tank, there is a rubber membrane that separates air (or nitrogen) from water. This membrane can age over time and may rupture. Also, air on the pressure side may leak through the Schrader valve (the same type as on a bicycle).
How to check the pressure in the expansion tank:
- The system must be cold and depressurized – shut down the boiler, open the safety valve or filling valve to let the pressure drop to zero.
- Locate the Schrader valve on the expansion tank (usually a red cap at one end of the tank).
- Use a standard tire pressure gauge to measure the pressure.
- The correct pressure should be 0.5–1.0 bar (depends on the system height – add 0.1 bar for each meter of system height, at least 0.5 bar).
- If the pressure is low, inflate the tank using a standard bicycle pump or compressor.
- If water (not air) comes out of the valve, the membrane is damaged and the tank needs to be replaced.
Practical example: In a family house with a two-floor system (height ~5 m), the gas pressure in the expansion tank should be at least 0.5 + 0.5 = 1.0 bar. If you find 0.1 bar, the pressure will rise very quickly when heating water, the valve will start dripping, and the customer will call saying that the "boiler is dripping".
Interval: Once a year, ideally before the heating season (September/October). Replacement of the expansion tank is needed on average every 7–10 years.
Pressure relief valve – function test
The pressure relief valve is a safety component that releases water at excessive pressure (standardly set at 3 bar) to prevent boiler damage. The problem is that valves that have not been used for a long time can become stuck with limescale and may not open during a real overpressure situation. Therefore, it is necessary to test the valve regularly.
How to test the pressure relief valve: There is a small lever or ring on the valve. Carefully lift or turn it – water must flow out of the discharge pipe. Then release the lever – the valve should close tightly. If it continues to drip after closing, the valve is worn and needs to be replaced.
Warning: Water from the pressure relief valve is hot. Perform this test carefully, ensuring that the discharge pipes are directed into a drain or a sink. Never test the valve if the system is cold and the pressure is zero – the test is only meaningful at normal operating pressure.
Interval: Once a year. Record each test in the service log.
Pump inspection – releasing after summer shutdown
Most models of Daline PTE have an integrated circulation pump. In smaller models such as Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 4 kW or Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 6 kW, the pump is dimensioned for smaller systems and is built directly into the boiler's housing. In higher output models – such as Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 14 kW or Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 18 kW – it can be combined in practice with an external pump for larger circuits.
Problems arise after a longer summer shutdown. The pump rotor can "stick" – mineral deposits mechanically block it. When the boiler is turned on in the autumn, the pump either buzzes (the rotor spins freely) or does not start at all, the boiler overheats the heat exchanger and shuts down with an error code.
How to manually release the pump: There is a screw cap on the pump (usually a brass or plastic plug, diameter approx. 20 mm). After unscrewing it, you will see the rotor shaft – insert a flathead screwdriver into the groove and gently turn the rotor by hand. This helps to break up the deposits and the pump will start normally. We recommend doing this once a year before the heating season begins.
Important: Before handling the pump plug, turn off the boiler and disconnect it from the power supply! Water will leak out of the opening, so have a cloth or a small container ready.
Interval: Once a year before the season. If the pump makes loud noises during the season (whining, friction), it is a sign of the end of its life (typically 10–15 years).
Heating elements – inspection and cleaning
Heating elements (heating elements, German: Heizstab) are directly responsible for converting electrical energy into heat. In Daline PTE boilers, these are spiral resistance elements made of stainless steel, immersed directly into the water of the heat exchanger. They usually last 15 or more years, but in areas with hard water (above 15°dH, which applies to much of central and eastern Slovakia), scale gradually builds up on them.
Layers of scale cause:
- Local overheating of the element → shortened lifespan
- Reduced heat transfer efficiency → higher electricity consumption
- In extreme cases, the element may burn out (the circuit breaker trips or the boiler displays a phase error)
A preventive measure is water treatment – softening or installing a corrosion inhibitor (e.g., Fernox or Sentinel dosing system). A water softener before the boiler can practically eliminate scaling after 5–10 years of operation.
If you did not have a softener and the water is hard, it may be necessary after 5–8 years to chemically descale or replace the heating element. This is a job for an authorized service technician, as it requires disassembling part of the boiler.
Inspection interval: The first professional inspection of the heat exchanger/elements is recommended after 5 years of operation, then every 2–3 years if the water is hard.
Water quality in the system – pH, hardness, inhibitors
This is a topic that most boiler owners do not address at all, yet it has a huge impact on the lifespan of the equipment. In central heating systems, the water should have:
- pH: 7.5 – 9.0 (a slightly alkaline environment slows down corrosion)
- Hardness: below 10°dH (below 180 mg/l CaCO₃), ideally 5–8°dH
- Oxygen content: minimal – the system must be sealed, without fresh water intake
- Corrosion inhibitor: we recommend adding an approved product (Fernox F1, Sentinel X100, etc.)
Practical scenario: a customer had a system with cast iron radiators and steel piping. Every two years, they added more water to the system (due to leaks), thus introducing oxygen and new minerals. After seven years, the boiler's heat exchanger was contaminated with rust, the pump was blocked by corrosion deposits, and one radiator section leaked. The cost of repairs (replacement of the heat exchanger, pump, and system flushing) exceeded the cost of preventive measures tenfold.
Recommendation: Have a water sample from the system taken every 2–3 years and tested. Many companies do this for free during service visits. Add a corrosion inhibitor to a closed system once a year or every two years, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Electrical part of the boiler – inspection of fuses, grounding, and wiring
An electric boiler draws a significant current – for example, Buderus Dakon Daline PTE 8 kW draws approximately 11–12 A per phase at full power when connected to a 400 V three-phase supply. The electrical installation must be suitable for this and must remain in perfect condition.
What to inspect on the electrical part:
- Circuit breaker and residual current device (RCD): Check whether the circuit breaker has tripped and whether the RCD reacts correctly when the TEST button is pressed (once a month).
- Wiring to the thermostat or controller: Weak currents in control cables can be disturbed if the cables run close to high-current cables. Visually check whether the cables are not mechanically damaged.
- Terminals and contacts: During the annual service inspection, the technician checks whether oxidation of terminals or loosening of screws has occurred. A loose terminal causes local overheating, can burn out, and worsens the contact.
- Grounding: Grounding verification every 3–5 years is part of the electrical equipment inspection.
Important warning: Any interventions in the electrical components of the boiler must be carried out exclusively by a qualified electrician or authorized service technician. Any self-handling of the high-current part of the boiler can have fatal consequences and usually voids the warranty.
Interval: Visual inspection once a year. Professional electrical inspection according to current regulations (ČSN/STN) every 5 years, every 3 years when renting out property.
Thermostat, regulator and sensors – functional check
Daline PTE boilers are delivered with an integrated controller and the option to connect an external room thermostat or an advanced equithermal regulator. The correct function of the control elements has a direct impact on comfort and energy consumption. If the regulator is working incorrectly (e.g., it does not turn off the boiler when the desired temperature is reached), the boiler overheats the space and increases consumption.
What to check:
- Room thermostat: Check whether it displays the actual room temperature (compare with a reference thermometer). The battery of a wireless thermostat usually lasts 1–2 years.
- Temperature sensor of the output water (NTC sensor): If the boiler suddenly switches to power limitation or displays a temperature error, the sensor may be damaged or dirty. This should be addressed by a technician.
- Setting of the desired output water temperature: For radiator systems, a typical output temperature is 60–70°C, for floor heating 35–45°C. Incorrect setting = discomfort or unnecessary consumption.

Comprehensive annual service inspection – what it should include
We recommend that you have the boiler inspected by an authorized service technician once a year (ideally at the beginning of September before the heating season). In practice, a good service inspection of the Daline PTE boiler takes 60–90 minutes and includes:

Many people simply turn off the boiler in spring and turn it back on in autumn. This is technically acceptable, but a few simple steps during shutdown and restart can prevent problems:
During shutdown (spring):
- Set the boiler to "summer mode" or completely turn off heating, but leave the power on – the boiler can then monitor the system status and provide freeze protection (if it has the antifreeze protection function).
- Check the water pressure – if it is low, top it up before summer, not in autumn.
- Do not activate corrosion protection for the system (do not drain water from the system unless it is necessary).
During restart (autumn):
- Check the pressure – it may have dropped during the summer.
- Loosen the pump rotor (see above).
- Bleed the radiators.
- Start the boiler at low power (first stage) and let it run for 20–30 minutes. Check whether all radiators heat evenly.
- Check the correct setting of thermostats and the time program.
When to call a service technician – signals you should not ignore
There are situations where your own maintenance is not enough and delaying service can lead to more serious damage or safety risks. Call a technician if:

- The pressure in the system drops faster than once every 3 months
- The boiler or pipes crack, knock or make unusual noises during operation
- The boiler circuit breaker trips repeatedly
- Water is leaking from the boiler or pipes

- The safety valve continues to drip after testing
- Visible corrosion or white/green discoloration on brass fittings (excessive water acidity)
Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How often do I need to top up water in the Daline PTE boiler?
In a properly sealed, tight system, you should not need to top up water at all, or at most once a year (losses due to evaporation and minimal leaks). If you need to top up water every few weeks, the system is leaking somewhere – look for a leak in the pipes, fittings, radiators or safety valve. Every addition of fresh water brings oxygen and minerals into the system, which accelerates corrosion and scaling of the heating elements.
Do I need to have a service record for the boiler – is it mandatory?
For an electric boiler, the same type of service record is not legally required as for a gas boiler (where regular service is explicitly required by law). Nevertheless, we recommend keeping records of all service activities – both for the purpose of claiming warranty (manufacturers may require proof of proper service), and for the case of selling the property. A buyer will appreciate the proven service history of the boiler.
What to do if the boiler displays a pressure error (e.g. F22) even after topping up water?
A pressure error after topping up water usually means one of two things: either you have topped up the water, but the system has not yet been bled and air is keeping the boiler in the perception of low pressure, or the expansion tank is damaged and immediately absorbs the added pressure and returns it. Procedure: bleed the system, check the pressure in the cold state – if it is at 1.2–1.5 bar and the error persists, the problem is in the electronics or pressure sensor. Call a technician.
Is an annual inspection necessary even for a new boiler under warranty?
Yes, and for two reasons. First, most manufacturers (including Buderus/Dakon) condition the validity of the warranty on regular service by an authorized partner. Second, even a new boiler can have problems with water quality, bleeding or expansion tank setting, which the manufacturer does not cover under warranty if they result from neglecting maintenance. An annual inspection of a new unit also allows the technician to adjust the parameters according to the actual conditions of your installation.
Can I leave the Daline PTE boiler turned on throughout the entire summer?
Yes, you can – the boiler in summer mode (only hot water heating, if a water heater probe is connected, or in standby) is not loaded and you have active freeze protection in case of unexpected cooling (spring/autumn). There is no reason to completely disconnect the boiler from the electrical grid if you are just going on vacation. For longer absences, we recommend keeping the anti-frost function active.
What can happen if I do not bleed the radiators before the season?
In a mild case, some radiators will only heat partially – the top part will be cold. Energy consumption will be higher because the boiler has to work longer. In a more serious case, air in the pipes can block the flow through the entire circuit or cause cavitation in the pump (air bubbles destroy the pump impeller blades). A system with poor circulation over the long term also leads to uneven scaling and corrosion of internal surfaces.
