How to choose an electric boiler Buderus Dakon Daline PTE – what to pay attention to

An electric boiler at first glance is a simple solution: no chimney, no gas inspection, no pellet tank. You connect the electricity, fill the heating circuit with water and you have heat. In practice, it is a bit more complicated – and it is precisely in the choice of a specific model and power that it is decided whether your system will work efficiently and reliably for ten, fifteen years, or whether it will trouble you from the first winter with insufficient power, high electricity bills or an unsuitable combination with other elements of the heating system.

The series Buderus Dakon Daline PTE belongs to the most sold electric boilers on the Slovak market for family houses and smaller commercial buildings. The reason is the combination of solid German construction tradition (Buderus is part of the Bosch Thermotechnology group), well worked out control and an accessible price. Despite this, it is not enough to "buy Daline" – you need to know which power, which accessories and under which conditions the boiler will actually make sense.

In this article, I will go through all the key aspects of selection from heat losses, through the electrical connection, tariff, regulation and even the combination with accumulation and floor heating – as I would explain it to a customer who sat opposite me in the showroom and wants to make the right decision.

What is Buderus Dakon Daline PTE and what differentiates it from cheaper competition

Daline PTE is a compact electric boiler with resistance heating elements (spiral resistance rods immersed directly into the heating water), an integrated circulation pump of class A, an expansion tank (usually 8 liters in the production standard), a safety valve, a temperature sensor NTC and a digital controller with the possibility of connecting a room thermostat or an equithermal regulation.

Compared to cheaper electric boilers from Asia or unknown European brands, Daline PTE has several specific advantages that become apparent not at the time of purchase, but during operation:

  • Power modulation in steps – the boiler does not switch full power at once, but gradually turns on individual heating elements. For example, the 8 kW model has 3 elements: 2 + 2 + 4 kW. This saves network fusing and extends the life of components.
  • CE and CE-ErP certification – complies with European directives on eco-design, which is a condition for some grant schemes.
  • Well worked out controller – allows setting of night damping, weekly program, frost protection and communication with an external thermostat via OpenTherm or a non-voltage contact (depends on the specific version).
  • Bosch/Buderus service network in Slovakia – in case of a breakdown you do not have to deal with ordering parts from abroad via unverified e-shops.
  • Five-year warranty (when the product is registered and the installation conditions are met by an authorized technician).

This does not mean it is a perfect boiler without weaknesses – we will go through them later. But the basic construction quality is measurably higher than that of unknown brand electric boilers of the same power.

Available powers and for whom is which suitable

The Daline PTE series is available in several power variants that cover the range from small apartments and chalets up to larger family houses. In Slovakia, the following models are commonly available:

Important note: models up to 8 kW (inclusive) usually operate on a single-phase supply 230 V / 50 Hz, models above 12 kW require a three-phase supply 400 V / 3+N+PE. Before purchase, therefore, check not only what power you need, but also what electrical connection you have available – or how much it would cost to expand it.

How to correctly determine the required power – not just according to square meters

The most common mistake when choosing an electric boiler is relying on the rough rule of "50 W per square meter" or even worse – buying a boiler based on what the neighbor had. This method can significantly overdimension the power (and thus the installation and insurance costs) in modern low-energy houses, or in older houses an undersized boiler can leave 15 °C in the bedroom even when it is -10 °C outside.

The correct approach is to calculate the building's heat losses according to STN EN 12831. This takes into account:

  • Thickness and material of the perimeter walls, ceiling and floor
  • Type and size of windows (U-value of glazing and frame)
  • Ventilation losses (natural or forced ventilation with heat recovery)
  • Building orientation and elevation (calculated outdoor temperature)
  • Required indoor temperature in each room

If you do not have an energy certificate or a project with a heat loss calculation available, you can orient yourself according to the following values of specific thermal power:

  • Passive standard new build (wall U ≤ 0.15 W/m²K): 15–25 W/m²
  • Low-energy new build (wall U ≤ 0.25 W/m²K): 25–40 W/m²
  • Standard new build (wall U ≤ 0.38 W/m²K): 40–60 W/m²
  • Insulated older house (wall U ≤ 0.5 W/m²K): 60–80 W/m²
  • Older house without insulation: 80–120 W/m² and more

From practice: I had a customer with a family house from 2003, floor area 110 m², 8 cm polystyrene facade insulation, plastic windows from 2008. We calculated the heat losses and came up with 7.8 kW. The customer wanted to buy 14 kW, because "he wanted a reserve for cold winters". I explained to him that an overdimensioned boiler would heat sufficiently, but would work in short cycles, the circulation pump would not run long enough, radiators would be unevenly heated and electricity would not be saved. In the end he took Daline PTE 8 kW with a 200 liter accumulation tank and was satisfied.

Electrical connection and protection – what must be prepared before installation

This is an area where customers most often underestimate the preparation. An electric boiler is not "plug into a socket" – it is a high-current appliance that requires a separate circuit with dimensioned protection and conductors.

Requirements for single-phase models (4, 6, 8 kW)

An 8 kW boiler at 230 V draws a current of approx. 34.8 A at full power (8 000 W ÷ 230 V). This means that you need:

  • At least a 40 A circuit breaker of type B or C (we recommend C for resistive load)
  • Supply cable of at least 10 mm² CYKYLo (for a length of up to 15 m) or 16 mm² for a longer line
  • 40 A / 30 mA protection device for personal protection (required according to STN 33 2000-4-41)
  • A separate circuit from the distribution board – no branches, no sharing with other appliances

Requirements for three-phase models (14, 18 kW)

A 18 kW model at 400 V / 3-phases draws approx. 26 A per phase (18 000 W ÷ 3 ÷ 230 V). You need:

  • Three-phase circuit breaker 32 A of type C (for 18 kW)
  • Cable of at least 6 mm² CYKY 5J (phases + neutral + protective conductor)
  • Three-phase protection device 40 A / 30 mA
  • Three-phase connection to the house – if you have only a single-phase connection, you need to ask the distributor to extend it (VSD or ZSD according to the location)

Extending a single-phase connection to a three-phase one takes from one week to three months and costs 200–800 € according to the location and distributor. Plan for this in the installation schedule.

Electric heating tariff – when it pays off and how to get it

Electric heating has one major disadvantage compared to gas or heat pump: the price per kWh of thermal energy is higher. While gas provides 1 kWh of heat for approx. 0.07–0.10 €, electric resistance heating pays 0.18–0.22 € for the same kWh (at a standard tariff). This is a significant difference in annual heating.

The solution is a low rate for electric heating – in Slovakia it is primarily the DD6 or DD7 tariff (depending on the distributor and region). These tariffs allow electricity consumption for heating at a significantly lower price (usually 50–70 % of the high rate price), in exchange for agreeing to block the boiler during peak hours via the HDO signal (mass remote control).

Conditions for obtaining the low rate:

  • The electric boiler must be the main source of heating (not supplementary)
  • The boiler must be capable of being controlled via the HDO signal (Daline PTE meets this requirement)
  • The contract with the distributor must be signed before installation – not retroactively
  • In some areas it is also a condition to have an accumulation tank or industrial TÚV storage

The boiler is typically blocked for 6–8 hours a day (morning and evening peak). If you have an accumulation tank, the heat accumulated outside the blocking period will cover these intervals without problems. Control and thermostats – what Daline PTE supports and what it doesn't

The built-in controller of Daline PTE allows setting the desired temperature of the heating water (typically in the range of 30–85 °C), night setback (a drop by a set number of degrees at a defined time), and displaying the current boiler status.

For convenient control, the boiler controller alone is usually not enough – customers appreciate:

  • Room thermostat (wired or wireless) – the boiler heats until the room temperature reaches the set value. Basic comfort, basic savings. Daline PTE has a terminal for connecting a no-voltage thermostat contact.
  • Adaptive (ekvitermic) control – the boiler adjusts the water temperature according to the outside temperature (the colder it is outside, the higher the water temperature). Ideal for floor heating. Requires an external sensor and a suitable controller – some versions of Daline PTE support this natively, others via an external Buderus RC controller.
  • Smart thermostats (e.g. Honeywell T6R, Danfoss Eco, or a WiFi thermostat) – they work via a no-voltage contact, so they are compatible with practically any boiler including Daline PTE.

One important thing from practice: If you plan zonal control (each room a different temperature), you need thermostatic heads on radiators or zone valves for floor heating. The boiler itself controls only the total water volume – not individual rooms. Combination with a storage tank or floor heating

This is a technical topic where customers make the most mistakes – and they feel the consequences during the first cold winter or the first electricity bill.

Storage tank

A storage tank (water tank 200–500 liters) functions as a "thermal battery". The boiler heats the water during a low tariff (e.g. at night), and this hot water then supplies the heating system even when the boiler is blocked or turned off. Benefits:

  • The boiler operates in long, efficient cycles (not short, damaging cycles)
  • Possibility to fully utilize the low tariff
  • Smoothing of power peaks during startup
  • Simple integration of solar collectors as an additional source

For models Daline PTE 14 kW and Daline PTE 18 kW, a storage tank is practically essential when using a low tariff. Even with 8 kW, accumulation is highly recommended in practice.

Floor heating

Floor heating operates with water temperature typically 30–45 °C (low-temperature system). Daline PTE can operate in this mode without problems, but it is necessary to:

  • Set the maximum boiler water temperature to a safe value (protects the floor structure)
  • Use a mixing valve (three-way valve with actuator), if the boiler cannot set a sufficiently low temperature itself when combined with radiators
  • Ensure hydraulic balancing of the floor heating loops

What to pay attention to when buying – common mistakes from practice

Over the years of practice, I have seen dozens of installations where the boiler selection was correct, but something else caused problems. Here are the most common scenarios that need to be considered in advance:

1. Underestimating the expansion tank

The Daline PTE boiler comes with an 8-liter expansion tank. For most small systems (up to about 80 liters of water in the circuit), this is sufficient. But in a larger system – floor heating throughout the house, a storage tank, long piping – 8 liters will not be enough. The safety valve will start dripping, the pressure will fluctuate. Solution: provide the system with an external expansion tank of 12–25 liters.

2. Inappropriate heating water temperature for radiators

If you have old steel radiators designed for 90/70 °C and switch to an electric boiler that works more efficiently at lower temperatures, the radiators will have low output. Either the radiators need to be replaced with larger ones (designed for 55/45 °C), or you have to accept a higher water temperature – which is possible with Daline PTE (max. 85 °C), but less comfortable for long-term boiler operation.

3. Missing hydraulic separation

In combined systems (boiler + storage tank + multiple circuits), hydraulic separation (hydraulic coupling or separator) must be designed correctly. Without it, problems with flows occur, the boiler unnecessarily switches on and off, and the pumps operate under unsuitable conditions.

4. Installation without an authorized technician

In order for the five-year Buderus warranty to be valid, the boiler must be installed by an authorized service technician and the installation must be registered. If it is done by a "familiar electrician" without certification, the warranty is void. In addition, in some insurance companies, a DIY installation may affect the payment of an insurance claim.

5. Forgetting to bleed the system

Electric boilers are sensitive to air in the heating system – air bubbles cause cavitation and noise from the pump, which can damage the heating element (localized overheating). The system must be thoroughly filled before starting, each radiator must be bled, and pressure must be checked.

Price and return on investment – a realistic view

Electric boilers have the lowest investment costs among all central heating systems. The boiler itself at 8 kW costs about 800–1,200 €, and installation with materials costs another 300–600 €. In total, you get a functional heating system for about 1,200–1,800 €.

Compare this to a heat pump (15,000–30,000 € with installation) or a gas condensing boiler (3,000–6,000 € including chimney and inspections). An electric boiler is clearly the winner in the initial investment.

Operating costs are a different chapter. With a standard tariff and a house with heat losses of 8 kW and 200 heating days per year, about 12,000–16,000 kWh of electricity is consumed annually (depends on regulation, house standard, etc.). At a price of 0.20 €/kWh (low tariff), the annual cost is 2,400–3,200 €. For comparison, a heat pump with a COP of 3 would use three times less electricity, but you would pay up to 20,000 € more for it today. The return on investment for a heat pump compared to an electric boiler is 10–15 years at current prices – which is borderline.

The conclusion is therefore: Daline PTE makes economic sense in a low-energy or passive house (low operating costs), in buildings with low heating requirements, as supplementary heating, or as a temporary solution until a heat pump is installed.

Common faults and what they indicate

Daline PTE is a reliable boiler, but like any device, it can fail. The most common error conditions:

  • Error E01 / high temperature – the thermostat has shut off the boiler due to exceeding the set temperature. Cause: blocked pump, air in the system, low flow.
  • Error E02 / sensor error – fault in the temperature sensor NTC. The sensor must be replaced.
  • The boiler is running, but the radiators are cold – blocked circulation pump (typically after a long summer break, the pump's rotor shaft welds). Solution: unscrew the pump cover and manually turn the shaft.
  • Pressure relief valve is dripping – high pressure in the system, insufficient expansion tank, system overfilled with water.
  • Noise in the boiler (popping, bubbling) – air in the system or limescale on the heating element.

Comparison of Daline PTE with the competition – a short overview

We encounter several electric boilers of a similar category on the Slovak market. Daline PTE is mainly compared to Protherm Ray, Dražice OKHE/OKCI, Atlantic Alféa and cheaper Chinese brands.   • Protherm Ray – direct competitor, similar functions, slightly different interface. An advantage is also the available service network of the Vaillant Group.
  • Dražice – Czech production, reliable brand, but smaller range of outputs and less advanced regulation.
  • Unknown brands from e-shops – low price, but uncertain availability of spare parts, no local service network, shorter lifespan.

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I connect Daline PTE to an existing heating system after a gas boiler?

Yes, mostly without problems. Daline PTE has standard hydraulic connection G¾" (depends on the model), so it can be connected to existing pipelines. However, you need to check the volume of the expansion tank (the original one may not be sufficient), bleed the system, check the flow resistance, and possibly replace the pump if the original had different parameters. I also recommend flushing the system if it was in operation for a long time with gas boiler water (sediments).

What is the electricity consumption of an 8 kW boiler per month?

Depends on the heat loss of the house, outside temperature, and regulation settings. Roughly: a well-insulated house of 90 m² consumes about 1,000–1,400 kWh in the coldest January (average -5 °C outside) with an 8 kW boiler. In transitional periods (spring, autumn), it can be 300–500 kWh per month. Annually, expect 5,000–9,000 kWh depending on the location and house standard.

Is it possible to combine Daline PTE with solar collectors?

Not directly – the boiler does not have an input for a solar circuit. However, a combination is possible indirectly via an accumulator tank with two heat exchangers: the solar circuit heats the water in the accumulator from below, and the boiler heats it from above. Such a combination can reduce electricity consumption by 20–40 % depending on the sunniness of the location and the size of the solar area.

Do I need a chimney for the electric boiler Daline PTE?

No. The electric boiler does not burn any fuel and does not produce exhaust gases. A chimney, air supply, or exhaust inspection is not required. This is one of the main advantages of electric heating – minimal construction interventions.

What if I don't have a three-phase connection and need more than 8 kW?

You have three options: 1) have the connection upgraded to three-phase (submit a request to the distributor, wait 1–3 months, cost 200–800 €), 2) connect two lower-power single-phase boilers (technically possible, but not always economically viable), or 3) choose another heat source. In practice, a three-phase connection is worth it for power above 8 kW.

How long does it take to heat the heating system from a cold state?

Depends on the volume of water in the system and the boiler power. Example: a system with 80 liters of water, 8 kW boiler, heating from 15 °C to 60 °C. Required energy: 80 l × 1.16 Wh/(l·K) × 45 K ≈ 4,176 Wh ≈ 4.2 kWh. At 8 kW power, heating takes about 32 minutes. In reality, a bit longer, as the system is also releasing heat into the rooms during heating. With an accumulator tank, the heating time is naturally longer (200 l tank = double the time).

Conclusion – how to make the right decision

Selecting the Buderus Dakon Daline PTE electric boiler is not just about what power you buy. It is about a comprehensive system view: what kind of house you have (or are building), what kind of electrical connection you have available, whether you will use a low tariff, how you handle regulation, and whether you supplement the system with an accumulator.

If you take three things from this article, let them be these: first – always start from a real calculation of heat losses, not from the rule of square meters. Second – address the electrical connection and tariff in parallel with the boiler selection, not as an additional problem. Third – an accumulator tank for boilers above 8 kW is not a luxury, but a key to efficient operation and full utilization of the low tariff.
